OPITO's CEO, Stephen Marcos Jones, recently visited Aberdeen Science Centre for a tour of the Theatre of Energy.

The OPITO Theatre of Energy offers an immersive experience through three engaging activities; the Energy Show, the Energy Game and the Energy Wall. Stephen put himself to the test trying out the interactive activities during his visit to meet with Bryan Snelling, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Science Centre.

OPITO has a long-standing commitment to developing the skills of the next generation through STEM activities like the OPITO Theatre of Energy.

By bringing the energy industry and young people together, we aim to inspire and excite the next generation of energy workers.

OPITO is pleased to announce, we are now offering greater flexibility for training centres worldwide, allowing them to offer Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) as a standalone course.

This change in OPITO policy empowers global training centres to provide a wider variety of courses and enhances efficiency for industry workers. Whether you're in oil & gas, or renewables, HUET-only courses ensure you receive the specific training needed for safe helicopter travel.

Key highlights:

This week, Richard Roberts, SVP of Strategic Partnerships is attending the IADC - International Association of Drilling Contractors World Drilling Conference in Madrid, Spain.

Speaking from the event, Richard said:

“The World Drilling Conference got off to a great start yesterday with some excellent insights into the global energy market shared with attendees. Presentations also highlighted the benefits of geothermal drilling, and there was a strong focus on attracting and retaining talent within the energy sector.

“It was great to meet with students from Universities Teknologi Petronas and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, along with other key stakeholders to discuss OPITO’s role and core offerings.”

In response to a call for more standardised helideck team member training in the US and the Gulf of Mexico, OPITO is proud to announce the launch of two new training standards:

✅ Helideck Operations Initial Training (Americas)
✅ Helideck Operations Emergency Response and Aviation Fuel Management Awareness

OPITO has worked closely with industry stakeholders to create the new robust standards, which have been designed and updated to reflect legislation and operational differences in the region.

Yesterday Mark Lamont, our NSTD People and Skills Project Manager, attended the Maritime UK Coastal Powerhouse Summit at Belfast Harbour in Northern Ireland.

Representing , Mark participated in a panel session at the event where there was a key focus on the critical need for a skilled workforce – now and in the future.

Mark shared OPITO’s knowledge and experience of the People and Skills element of the North Sea Transition Deal, providing an opportunity to collaborate on key elements within the Maritime sector.

Product Development Manager Lucie Booth, and Quality Assurance Manager AP, Jeevinder Singh recently held the AP Centre Forum at ERGT in Perth, Australia.

Designed to be a focal point for industry collaboration and advice, the forum gave our network of centres from the region the opportunity to share learnings.

ERGT also gave attendees a tour of their facility and provided multiple demonstrations.

During their recent visit to KL, Stephen Marcos Jones, Alex Spencer and Sridaran Sabapathy met with Shairizal Bin Badzri General Manager, HSE at Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM).

Malaysia Petroleum Management has been a valued industry partner of ours for many years. MPM play a pivotal role implementing OPITO’s safety standards and qualifications in country, in turn ensuring a safe, skilled and competent energy workforce now and in the future.

The meeting served as a great opportunity to strengthen OPITO and MPM’s relationship, providing a chance to discuss the energy landscape in Malaysia, and future opportunities.

OPITO recently held a Training Centre Forum in South Africa, which was well attended by a delegation of OPITO approved centres from throughout the Middle East and Africa.

The meeting was hosted by Offshore Africa Training Centre and facilitated by OPITO's Regional Quality Assurance Manager Seamus Croll. We were also delighted to welcome along Survitec and VIKING Life-Saving Equipment who gave insightful presentations on the day.

A special thank you to Carl Pesat from the Namibian Association for Offshore Oil and Gas Service Providers who gave a very interesting energy industry outlook for Namibia which generated some great discussions.

These forums are imperative in encouraging collaboration and a great networking opportunity with like-minded individuals from your region.

During OPITO’s recent visit to Brazil, the team visited Maersk Training Brasil in Rio de Janeiro, and RelyOn Nutec Brasil's facilities in Macae. Relyon Nutec and Maersk training centres are the only OPITO approved centres in Brazil, and we appreciate the role they play in helping us achieve a safe and skilled workforce in the region.

Thanks to both for hosting us at their locations, and we look forward to continuing to work together to build upon our shared success.

While in Brazil recently, OPITO's Leadership Team hosted a canopy reception with the Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro. This was a fantastic opportunity to discuss the huge volume of new energy projects being planned and undertaken within the region and understand their challenges surrounding the recruitment and retention of personnel.

Other guests invited to meet with the OPITO team included representatives from ABL,UK Gov, Rely on Nutec, EIC, Equinor, WSB, ANP, Coppe, FIRJAN and SEENEMAR.

OPITO will be establishing a presence in the region in 2024, to allow us to continue to support the industry further and raise awareness of how OPITO can ensure a safe and skilled workforce.
