YOGA has been part of my life since 2000. In the same year I developed my knowledge of anatomy and physiology by training with Andrew McGonigle (Dr Yogi).

Whilst working as a family lawyer, I quickly developed a regular practice and keen interest which led me to completing a teacher training course with Brian Cooper ten years later. I will always be a student of the practice and have since had the fortune and privilege of training with many internationally renowned teachers including Leslie Kaminoff, Ray Long, David Williams, Jason Crandell, Noah Ma

Attention everyone! This evening's class will be the last Monday class before we break for Christmas. Come and join me for a good stretch of your whole spine. Great to counter long periods of sitting.

Hi.......excuse short notice but would be great if you could join me for this evening's yoga class. It's at the Jubilee Centre at 6.30pm. Lots of twisting.....helping to restore and maintain the spine's natural range of motion by stretching and strengthening the muscles of the back and abdomen......also great for stretching the muscles of the shoulders and chest.

Our weekly functional movement yoga class returns this evening at the slightly later time of 6.30pm at the Jubilee Community centre. A gentle class focussing on spinal movement for optimum health of the spine and core stability. A great combination!

Looks like Summer has arrived at last! Hope everyone is managing to keep cool. As it's the holiday season there'll be a short break from classes at the Jubilee Centre. No Monday classes until September. There'll be 2 more Friday morning classes ( 22nd and 29th July), a break in August and back in September.

Having been persuaded to enter the Manchester 10k run (in 4 weeks time!!!), I'm now in training! I've just got home from a slow, steady 6.5k. The actual run felt fine but oh my word.....my legs after the run.......tight, tight, tight!!!!! So this is a reminder to everyone (me included ) to have a good stretch (hamstrings, calves, quads and hips) after a run. Better still if you can sneak in a yoga practice!

The thoracic spine (mid back) is less flexible than the cervical spine (neck) and the lumbar spine (lower back) as a result of it's vertebrae attaching to the rib cage. Whilst this provides important protection for the heart and lungs, it results in a reduced range of motion.
Over time, the downward pull of gravity, coupled with our daily habits (sitting at computers, at the wheel of a car, watching tv etc) cause a slump in the shoulders which decreases range of motion even more.
Tomorrow morning's class at the Jubilee Community Centre will focus on mobility of the thoracic spine to create strength and a healthy amount of movement. Added benefits include improved breathing and the function of the digestive organs.

When I mention to people that I teach yoga, so often I hear " Oh yoga's not for me.....I'm not flexible enough".

Despite the multitude of images across social media, yoga isn't about getting your legs behind your head or making a pretzel shape with your body. For many of us, practising every day for 100 years, this just ain't gonna happen ; our skeletal structure just won't allow it (without surgery!).

A regular yoga practice, however, will help increase flexibility, allowing for a greater range of motion through the joints. For some, this enhances performance on the football pitch; for others, it allows us to be able to continue to tie our shoelaces.
