Aikido is a Japanese martial art based on the principle of Ki, That is, the harmony or balance of energy. One seeks to overcome an attacker by first blending with the incoming attack then redirecting its energy. Taking the attackers balance both physically and mentally and then controlling the movement is important in Aikido, as is the development of the use of Ki rather than strength. Many of the movements in Aikido are based on movements with sword and other weapons.

Our Spence Sensei Lancashire Aikikai was passionate about coach education. He will be missed by many. Comments about him made by others on our webpages (www.lancashireaikikia.org/spence/index5.html) reflect the high regard every one had for him. Funeral 25th July 2024 details on our link
In Memorium: Bob Spence Sensei π
It with sadness that we report that Bob Spence died on 14th July. He was Head of the Lancashire Aikikai Association from November 1998 when Mucha Sensei the founder died. Spence Sensei had been a huge influence within the Lancashire Aikikai, British Aikido Board (BAB) and beyond.
He regarded both Chiba Sensei and Mucha Sensei as his teacher, mentor and friend.
A unforgettable figure who conducted many coaching courses for the BAB at all levels over many years. He was instrumental in working and fashioning the BAB Coaching Award Scheme from the ground up. Drawing on his experience as a Lecturer, Tutor with the Amateur Swimming Association and his Aikido background. He was appointed by the BAB as its first Coach Tutor in 1999.
Lancashire Aikikai have opened an Appreciation page on their website (www.lancashireaikikai.org) We encourage those who knew or encountered him to share their recollections / appreciation. This page has details of the Funeral that is Thursday 25th July 2024
