Was nice to have England’s Kumite fighter in clinic today treating him for a few different things following his intense training recently In preparation for the upcoming English Nationals next weekend in Cannock. I quickly identified Sam had a imbalance in his shoulders. If a person maintains poor posture, their shoulders can become uneven, as some sets of muscles become tight, and others become weak.

Certain sports, habits, and activities such as karate and fighting, typically those that involve the heavy use of one arm — can cause imbalances that lead to uneven shoulders.
When there is an imbalance in the muscles surrounding the head, neck, and shoulders, it affects your posture. Weakened muscles allows your shoulders to round forward.

Depending on the cause and severity of the imbalance, treatment may involve physical therapy and avoiding habits or activities associated with muscular, bone, and joint imbalances. After I treated his shoulders I looked into his lower back pain and focused on working on his IT band, glutes and hamstrings! His hamstrings were so tight and so was the lower back muscles! However, with the deep tissue massage it will help release the hip muscles, And therefore will be able to kick better and increase his range of motion!

Acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) pain occurs where the collar (clavicle) bone meets the shoulder blade (scapula).

Pain in this joint can occur if you carry out a lot of activities that require you to lift your arms above your head.
Making changes to the amount of overhead activities you do can ease the pain. For my client here he is a telecommunications engineer and is always using his shoulders when climbing up and down.
Archy has been treated and has been prescribed some exercises to aid his recovery.
If you’re experiencing pain in this area try some pendulum exercises such as ; Stand leaning on a table supporting your body weight with the other hand. Let your affected arm hang, relaxed, straight down.
– Swing your arm forwards and backwards 30 seconds
– Swing your arm sideways, left and right
– Swing your arm in a circle. Or; assisted arm raises…Lie on your back, on your bed, with your elbows bent. Hold one wrist with your other hand. Lift the affected arm, assisting with your other hand.
If this is easy do not use the other hand to help! Or you can try Isometric Exercises – internal rotations
Stand with your arm close to your side and your elbow at a right angle. Push the palm of your hand against the other hand. There should be no movement.
Hold for 10 secs and repeat 3 times. If you find that you are not improving, I am more than happy to offer some advice or treatment which can help in managing shoulder pain.

Was such a pleasure to have met and worked with this evening. Daryl is a Professional cricketer who plays for New Zealand, he is an all rounder cricketer, he’s playing at Lancashire cricket club at the minuite and enjoying his time there. He tells me also he is the son of former New Zealand rugby union coach, John Mitchell! Wow a massive family of professional sportsmen. If only my dad was here to have met him, my dad was a big follower of cricket along with his passion for football, Daryl is a red too so they would have got along so much! Working with this evening following his sprint training, his legs needed a good sports massage to enable him to perform at his optimum performance.
With it being the start of a football season, this means that he and his team mates are prone to injuries and when not treated properly, these injuries can lead to lifelong suffering. Louis is preventing this from happening and as a result understands that he needs to come to see me for a regular sports massage.
Massage increases tissue flexibility and muscle relaxation, improves range of motion, relieves trigger points, as well as reduces adhesions. Combined, these benefits of massage helps Louis remain active, optimising his training, and ultimately maximises his performance.

Far too many people as well as professionals rush back into action too soon, inpatient after even the shortest lay-off. The result is often a recurrence of the problem.

So with this in mind let me tell you the secret (she says… yes I’m a sod for not resting 😜, but the secret is this….
The secret of a successful comeback is to put the injured area through a graduated series of exercises, each one a little more demanding than the last. This is how and why the following training ladders were devised. Training ladders for rehab!! They have been used by everyone from dancers to golfers to Olympic champions.
Starting on the bottom step of the ladder, the injured person works his/her way through the prescribed exercises. It is important to realise that movement is a skill; in a simple form of exercise such as running 🏃‍♀️ there is rhythm and balance between each leg. Loss of rhythm during rehab may indicate that in order to reach the training target, the body is using other muscles to protect the injured one. It is so important to carry out the exercises correctly and to STOP at the first sign of pain. If pain occurs you maybe causing more damage, if pain is present wait!!! BEGIN AGAIN AFTER 24HRS FROM 1ST STEP.
Loss of rhythm ? Stay at same level or drop back one step on the ladder to regain rhythm.
Do not push onto the next level, even if no pain. The new session should start from the bottom but, when reaching a higher level you may cut down on the number of reps.
REMEMBER : no two injuries are alike!! The rate of healing from person to person will vary.

HOW TO EASE JOINT PAIN
In the colder weather people tend not to get out and exercise as much, however the days are now slightly warmer. Your joints may have seized up. It is important that your joint health is good all year round and mobility is increased.
Joint stiffness may have been caused by lack of activity, over activity or as the body’s attempt at maintaining joint stability. With increased physical and lifestyle demands, ligaments and tendons along with the fibrous joint capsule -become denser and thicker in the areas where the physical strain is regularly higher. In time, this continued strain on soft tissues will cause joint hypomobility as a form of protection. In its early stages it will lead to muscle fatigue, decreased joint range of movement and further strain which may well develop into wear and tear or osteoarthritis.
Sadly probably due to a poor lifestyle and physical activities over time that erode the bodies resilient qualities.
With this in mind we need to STRETCH more!!!!!!
1) Why not try walking 🚶‍♀️and when you do try walking faster…
2) stretch your joints to full range
3) participate in different sports or exercise.
4) Try Tumeric - with a twist of black pepper in milk.. this will help reduce inflammation 🙌
Keep it real, love the body you’re in! Look after it, we only get one ☝️ love it or hate it… it’s yours to keep. With that in mind the gym is calling me 🙏 happy Saturday everyone 🤘

Does your child compete in a sport… do they need a sports massage? Have you ever considered one to help with their performance ?

Children's bodies are constantly growing and changing. Their muscles, soft tissues and bones are not as developed when compared to those of an adult. As a sports therapist I would often provide treatment that would utilise less pressure, slower pacing and an overall shorter session duration. To effectively treat the child's soft tissues, I do not need to use a heavy handed approach to stimulate the affect of massage.

🤕 PAIN ON INSIDE OF KNEE? 😬

The knee is the most injury prone of all the joints, it is especially susceptible to falls and twists. Severe damage may occur in flat out competition, but problems are often caused in training, where the knee is overused and abused in unbalanced and badly planned sessions. The anatomy of the individual knee may also be at fault, this maybe corrected by altering the balance of the foot. Many training schedules combine strength, endurance and stamina, but these can be broken down into component parts if overuse injuries occur.
Let’s look at Torn cartilage/Torn meniscus.
MEDIAL cartilage is on the inside of the knee, LATERAL cartilage on outside.
In diagnosis: Gap between knee bones are tender to press, your knee maybe swollen, it may stick lock or click. If you twist or squat it may hurt!
CAUSE: forceful twisting tears or splits cartilage, the shock absorber in the knee.
Self treat by using the RICE method, rest, ice, compression and elevation. Avoid twisting movements!
Strengthen the quads ☝️

Back pain? 😬
There are many reasons as to why we experience back pain. They could be from breathing or coughing, lowering chin onto chest, turning upper body one way rather than another, bending to side. Occasionally pain may be felt in the front of the chest as well as in back.
What can be the CAUSE?
Backbone (facet joint) or it’s shock absorber which you will probably have heard me talk about which is in-between (the disk) moved out of place, therefore ligaments have stretched and as a result muscles may cramp.
So what can you do???
Self treat: REST, avoid twisting top half of body and lifting from the side. Instead turn to face the object before picking it up. Sitting maybe easier than laying down, so prop them pillows up to form “chair back” on bed.
Medically: rest and painkillers, manipulation! (See me)
The biggest question I get asked is about returning to exercise…
Obviously no upper body workout til it gets better!, you can do general training and follow normal fitness programme as long as pain free.
Just be mindful of potentially making things worse, so if you can rest …but best thing is to keep yourself moving 😄

Medial ligament strain ??? 🙁 🦵

This ligament is vital to knee stability, it must not be put at risk. Bad news is it can take 3-4 months to heal. So get that upper body worked on instead. Any exercise needs to be done with a knee support in place. Ice it lots!!! Make sure the support wether it be a brace or strapping it reaches a good 6inches above and below the knee. (15cm) if the support is too short it’s useless!
Rest as much as you can, ice it, use compression and elevate it when possible.

Wishing all my clients old and new the best Christmas. The hectic holiday season can be exhausting, especially if you’ve not began the food shop 🤣 (like me)…You’ve bought all your presents, already eaten about a million mince pies, drank roughly a gallon of mulled wine and probably partied till your eyes will no longer stay open! What next… Go home? Go on holiday? Stay with friends? Whatever it is you’re doing, it’s a pretty sure bet that it will involve more of the above. So… amongst the celebrations, how are you going to relax? Me…. I’m going to spend time with my family and prob drink a boat load of wine and beer… in fact anything with a percentage sign on it… but….. you know me I will be throwing a workout in there somewhere! Remember your health is your wealth, don’t wait til 2023 to start over… start NOW! Go smash them goals!

Some people don’t regularly hit the gym in December, but exercise is a really great way to de-stress and clear your head🙌.
To keep active you could do something fun like going for a brisk winters walk with family or friends. There’s evidence that nature can leave you feeling calmer and more positive. So take a walk, or just get out and enjoy your natural surroundings…
