Gerald FitzGerald Bless him!

I recently had the honour of being invited to collaborate with who are an amazing, local coffee company, here in Andover, Hampshire.

The video will be out soon, however, wanted to share something with you first…

The man in this picture is Gerald Fitzgerald, who, sadly passed away in 2023, and if you’re local, like me, you may remember him selling coffee from the back of his van at Andover Train Station.

I would’ve been early 20’s, commuting to work in Salisbury, and I distinctively remember Gerald and how cool he was, in appearance, how he came across, and with a clear enthusiasm for coffee. Bloody good looking bloke too, may I add.

Anyway, this was my first encounter of coffee culture, and I knew from talking to him then, how passionate he was about what he was doing. As a young man, I didn’t care for coffee much persay, but I distinctly remember talking to Gerald, enjoying the conversations, and how he carried himself. I was on hot chocolates back then, slippery slope!

To make it clear, I didn’t know Gerald, we weren’t acquainted, other than those brief chats, and it’s highly likely he wouldn’t have remembered me, but as an impressionable young man, I did.

Fast forward 20 years, I’m stood with his son Romeo, talking about the business, he tells me the story of how it started, and then explained his father had sadly passed away, showing me a picture of Gerald. Then the penny dropped…

I hadn’t seen Gerald since those days, other than a brief moment last year, where I now remember seeing him, and where I’d known him from.

I felt an immediate sense of connection, through time, to what we were doing here, and became one of those situations that really hit home. I’m truly sad for the loss of Gerald, and hope I can pay homage to his vision, through this collaboration. I’ve heard he had a great sense of humour, so fingers crossed.

Sat on Holiday in Spain, watching the sunrise, drinking a double Espresso, which Romeo is responsible for, I had the idea for this picture, which, I spent a bit of time on in creating, but I wanted to send Romeo, in honour of his father.
