Water is at its coldest in April, its warmest in October and so cold-water shock is high risk – anything below 15 degrees increases the risk of heart attacks as the cold causes the blood vessels in the skin to close. If you do enter the water unexpectedly follow these guidelines:

• Take a minute. The initial effects of cold-water pass in less than a minute so do not try to swim straight away.
• Relax and float on your back to catch your breath. Try to get hold of something that will help you float.
• Keep calm then call for help or swim for safety if you’re able.

If you find yourself struggling in the water, you should “Float to Live” just lean back and use your arms and legs to help you float. Wait until you can control your breathing then call for help or swim to safety.

If you have children, it is important to teach them to float too – perhaps, practice in the swimming pool before you hit the outdoor water.

Arriving at an unknown airport and negotiating local and onward transport can be tricky. 🚆

Train transport from Gatwick Airport certainly is tricky at the best of times - with three train operators all going into London and each with different fares. Here we explain the differences between them:

· Gatwick Express to London Victoria (approximately 31 minutes) – travelling between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria with stops at East Croydon and Clapham Junction. This stands out as a red train.

· Thameslink to London Bridge (journeys vary between 29 to 48 minutes) - a train that travels to London Bridge then goes over the River Thames to stop at Blackfriars (the only station in London that has entrances both sides of the river), Farringdon and London St Pancras before continuing to either Peterborough, Cambridge, or Bedford. Usually this is a grey train, often with blue accents.

· Southern to London Bridge (approximately 41 minutes) and Southern to London Victoria (between 32 and 57 minutes), the slower trains are during peak times. These trains are green or white with green accents.

Hybrid working took on a new dimension last week when Carol and Louisa had the opportunity to visit MS Maud, a Hurtigruten expedition cruise ship at Dover before she, later that day, embarked on a very popular 13-day British Isle Remote Islands cruise.

Far from being a typical cruise ship, Maud enables guests to get involved in the onboard Science Programme and uses zodiac boats to transfer guests to remote beaches where a hike and variety of excursions are available.

Much as they were gorgeous, we felt that lounging in a luxurious balcony suite could mean missing out on an interesting presentation from one of the onboard scientists or naturalists.

BTW the food and wine were delicious!!
