MPOX
Due to the current outbreak of Mpox in Central and Western Africa we are getting numerous enquiries about the Mpox vaccine. This is not currently available privately in the UK. A very small subset of people may be eligible on the NHS. This information can be found on the link below including symptoms and what to do if you think you may have Mpox.
https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/mpox/
Even if travelling to these regions the risk of Mpox is very low. There is no recommendation for the use of the vaccine in travellers from the UK at present.
Mpox is transmitted via close contact with someone with Mpox. Travellers can minimise their risk by practicing good hygiene measures such as regular hand washing, ensuring surfaces/objects are clean/disinfected and also ensuring bedding and towels are clean. Animals can also transmit Mpox so avoiding contact with animals whilst abroad and ensuring any food containing meat is well cooked also reduces risk of transmission.
We will update our website if the vaccine becomes available. However we have confirmed that it is only supplied to Government organisations and not commercially. This means it will likely only be available if the UK Government decide there is a need to vaccinate further subgroups within the population.
If the risk to travellers increases, including if it becomes inadvisable to travel, would be published on the FCDO website.

SPOTLIGHT ON YELLOW FEVER
Yellow Fever is a mosquito borne viral illness that is endemic in some parts of Africa and South and Central America as well as Trinidad in the Caribbean. The yellow fever mosquito feeds predominantly from dawn to dusk. Yellow fever, if symptomatic, usually starts with symptoms of fever, muscle pain, headache and loss of appetite and will then progress on to jaundice, bleeding and multi organ failure. There is no treatment apart from supportive care. Mosquito bite avoidance is also extremely important.
When you have your travel health assessment your advisor will consider your risk of yellow fever, and if there are any certificate requirements for your trip, as some countries will specify you have to have a certificate to prove vaccination against yellow fever in order to enter. Vaccination against yellow fever is a single dose and now is lifelong so it is very important to keep your certificate safe. Certificates can be reissued but you need to have the batch number and manufacturer of the vaccine you received in order for this to be possible. Certificates issued before the change in 2016 to lifelong protection do not need to be reissued as they should be accepted despite the length previously being 10 years.
Yellow fever vaccinations have to be administered at a designated centre. This means you can be assured that your advisor has had specific training in the assessment and administration of the yellow fever vaccine. We would recommend you consult your travel health advisor as soon as possible when you have booked your trip to ensure you have all your health needs covered.
SPOTLIGHT ON JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS
If you are travelling to South East Asia or the Indian Subcontinent then this illness is something that could affect you and is preventable through vaccination. It has received more publicity recently as an outbreak has been reported for the first time in Australia. It is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito, which is most active between dusk and dawn. Bite avoidance remains extremely important to prevent mosquito-borne illnesses.
The Japanese Encephalitis virus causes fever, headache, encephalitis, meningitis, seizures and other nerve problems. There is no treatment other than supportive care and 1 in 250 people infected will have more severe illness.
It is more likely to occur in travellers having a prolonged stay in rural areas or travel to rural areas during the transmission season. Anyone with pre-existing medical problems, under 10 years or over 50 years is more at risk of serious disease.
It is advisable to vaccinate:
Those likely to be frequently exposed to bites in rural infected areas (e.g. backpackers, agricultural workers, volunteers).
Long stays (e.g. more than one month) in infected areas.
Repeated visits to risk areas (e.g. flood plains, rice paddies, marshlands).
Short stays during epidemics/outbreaks.
Migrants going to live in an endemic area.
Vaccination consists of 2 doses of an inactivated vaccine given at least a week apart and ideally 28 days apart. We would recommend you consult your travel health advisor as soon as possible when you have booked your trip to ensure you have all your health needs covered. The consultation costs £20 but you will get this deducted from the cost of any vaccinations you have with us and we will advise you if any are available free through your GP.
Come visit us at the Tarka Clinic stand at North Devon Health Fest this coming Saturday 15th April from 10am-4pm. We will be on hand to answer any questions about travel health and vaccinations. So if you want to check if you may need any jabs for your upcoming holiday or trip pop along and chat to us.
