I’ve been training to be a counsellor, specialising in Transactional Analysis (TA) which uses models such as the Drama Triangle & Parent Adult Child (PAC) & the Ok Corral where we invite people out of the DT & onto the Autonomy Triangle. It sounds complicated, but it’s a great way to simplify human interactions.

🧠 How Do Emotions Affect Our Tissues? Discover the Connection! 🧠

Have you ever wondered how emotions might impact the tissues in your body? 🌟 In her latest article, Vivien Henderson, LMT, CST-D, dives into the profound connection between the mind and body through SomatoEmotional Release (SER) in CranioSacral Therapy (CST).

Emotions like shock, anger, or fear, especially those tied to traumatic events, can become trapped in our tissues, leading to physical discomfort and dysfunction. Through the gentle, yet powerful techniques of CST, these emotional components can be released, allowing for deep healing and restored balance.

Highlights from the Article:

The story of how a simple go-cart accident led to an insightful journey of healing emotional trauma embedded in the body.
An exploration of how CST can locate and release these "energy cysts," leading to profound shifts in both physical and emotional well-being.
Real-life case studies that showcase the transformative power of addressing the emotional layers within physical injuries.

Why is CranioSacral Therapy A-Maze-ing?

I have very fond memories of Hampton Court as a child (aside from the various beheadings etc that the place is steeped in 😱), finding myself in a real proper maze for the first time. Fascinated by the narrow paths, the hedge you could almost see through (but not enough to help you get anywhere), and sudden dead-ends, I loved the challenge of trying to know where I was, how I was going to find the centre, and then find my way out again.

And did anyone happen upon the maze made of books? It was an art installation they called aMAZEme - I came across it in the Southbank centre, 10 or 12 years ago I think. Well, aMAZEme it did. And I loved it.

So CST? What does that have to do with mazes?

Well, someone got me thinking earlier in the week. Their session that day involved what we call SER (SomatoEmotional Release) which is when we (usually both the therapist and the person on the table being treated) notice that there is an emotional component in some way unlocking, releasing, from the place we are working…

The client become aware of feelings around a few issues that had not been working out in their life – in particular they acknowledged that they were not happy in their job (this admission to themselves had a whole potential set of ramifications to it…).

They laughed and said they were ‘stuck in a dead-end job’ and compared it to being stuck in a maze!

The maze came to signify both what we do when we find ourselves at dead-ends - what can we do but turn round and find a different way? - as well as the sense of a deep-rooted search for our centre.

Do we need to find our centre? What do we expect to find there? Maybe we don’t even know, despite the seeming compulsion to do so (in our lives as well as in a maze!)

Maybe it’s our hearts, our souls, a peacefulness, connectedness; I’ve heard people describe the ‘places’ they get to in sessions as things like the ‘is-ness’, ‘before-before’… or maybe there just are no words.

But just as we find these deep and central places in sessions, (and mazes), we then have to venture back to the world. But we are most often forever changed by the knowing that whatever we found there exists.

So I was amused in thinking about CST as a fabulous tool in yet another way – a verb that helps us navigate life:

we – and it - are simply A-Maze-ing!

Do you treat fascia?

Do you know how to treat THIS fascia (in the pics)? And why doing so might hugely benefit your clients?

Fascia (the thin layers of connective tissue that surrounds most of our internal bits and pieces), is great to work with, right?

Responsive, dynamic, brings change to our clients...

But what about these bits? The 3 important layers of fascia that surround the brain and spinal cord?

They respond to ‘treatment’ too, just like the rest of the body.

Why is that so important?

Because when we know how to treat them we can support:

🧠 the flow - and drainage - of blood in the brain,
🧠 the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (made from the blood to then surround the brain),
🧠 the passageway of cranial nerves as they enter / exit the brain,
🧠 the alignment of the bones that these fascias line so closely… and so much more.

And many, many clients report changes in how they feel, how they function and how they fare after the session.

So don’t leave it out of your treatments!

We can show you some effective and efficient ways to treat it so your clients can reap the many benefits.

How and when? At our first level class, CranioSacral Therapy 1.

The next ones are 11 – 14th September in Kenilworth, Warwickshire or 20 – 23rd November in Brighton.

You're not thinking: "Ooh I wonder when I can next get stuck in to learn some fabulous techniques to treat the craniosacral system", right?

(Or are you 🤔?)

If you've never heard of it before then probably not!

But if you knew that this system was right next to your brain and spinal cord, intimately connected to your central nervous system and deeply impacting on every other system in your body would you be curious?

* Would it be helpful to find out why your head needs to be properly sitting on your neck (sounds obvious but theres quite alot to it!).

* What if you discovered how the bones of your head should be moving (yes I did say moving!) and what to do if they are a little off...?

* Imagine the aha moment when you get why falling on your tail bone can have a disastrous effect on your eyes, ears or jaw... (and what to do if this has happened to you or a person you treat.)

There are some crazy questions, that you probably didn't even know you have, that we explore some even crazier answers to.

Except they're not really that crazy.

But they are definitely a lot of fun to think about, learn about, treat.

We are now booking for the next 'check out crazy' class.

CranioSacral Therapy 1. It will be in Kenilworth on the 11th - 14th September.

So relevant for me right now! I’m going for treatment tomorrow to ease my symptoms of PCS. 🤕

According to a statement from the Concussion Alliance, “Craniosacral Therapy (CST) [is] … one of the most effective treatments that we’ve found for persistent post-concussion symptoms.”

This MASSAGE Mag article agrees CST is “the missing piece” in the evaluation and treatment approach for symptoms related to traumatic brain injury and post-concussion syndrome. 3 things that are IMPOSSIBLE in CranioSacral Therapy 😲

1. To know ALL the relevant anatomy and physiology….
As a teacher of this I know that we will likely never fully know it all, remember it and have names and full understanding of every body structure and process. New understandings in the way the brain works, cerebrospinal fluid flows and numerous other pieces are being discovered all the time that are relevant to the work – keeping up is interesting! However, a good grounding and an ability to visualise can go a long way…

2. Neutrality…
We teach and request of practitioners that we become neutral in our touch, neutral in our minds, neutral in our intent, neutral in our judgement. But can we ever? As soon as we feel we have gained a bit more neutrality or reduction in judgement in one area we are usually confronted by the next we need to work on! It’s part of the joy of the ongoing journey… (and one that is hugely beneficial in all aspects of our lives).

3. How any session is going to go…
We learn a good number of techniques, the basics of therapeutic presence, anatomy, physiology and pathology, but exactly what you might need to do and in what order, you’ll never be able to plan in advance. Although our first few courses give steps to follow, once you have mastered the techniques you start wherever the body might need you to start, and follow along the clues the body gives you as you work. And it’s different Every Time!

Dr Upledger summed this up in his book: CranioSacral Therapy - Touchstone for Natural Healing:

“When I begin a session with a patient, I try not to remember what I found out previously; I always evaluate the situation freshly…. [neutrality]
I may find new developments that might otherwise escape me if I already have a mindset when I re-evaluate…. [How is any session going to go…]

After the initial evaluation for each session there is plenty of time to integrate your previous findings with the patient’s report of changes, new pains, etc. [consider the relevant or new anatomy and physiology]….

In CranioSacral Therapy we operate on the assumption that all you need to know is lying before you on the table at the moment of evaluation.

[It’s impossible not to be awed!]

Ever been curious about how CranioSacral Therapy developed to include SomatoEmotional Release? And why we all feel it's so extraordinary?

Check out the best introductory book: 'Your Inner Physician and You' by Dr John Upledger.

I picked it up again recently, having read it so many times already, and got re-inspired about working with the craniosacral system... that's why I love this work! I still get fired up 25 years on!

👉 Full of stories and info about how CST developed from the cranial osteopathy he had studied, how the years researching at Michigan State University contributed, and many stories from clients that kept him fired up to keep going!

I hope you are inspired as much as me.
