Had some amazing and great boxes today. Here's some ladies off to their new homes in comfort.
To future rehomers, please consider these chickens have travelled a long way close to their feathery friends and need a bit of space to relax onward to their forever homes. They are quite large and require adequate carriers to travel home in.
These chooks were so well behaved today, such little beauties. Good luck to them all. Happy chickens šŸ” šŸ’“

Hi everyone, just wondering how all your chooks are doing? How are they getting on with flock down? If you'd like any suggestions for enrichment.. give me a shout. Mine have been busy and now I have a few laying after a little break ( they deserve a break too) .
Next rehome in March. Happy New year to you all.

11/07/2022

Hi, this is a post to see if there's anyone that's able to help these lovely chooks out. They need a new home as their owner is poorly. Please reach out if you are able to rehome these. I'm able to help with collection if needs be.
Location is Llanedeyrn Cardiff CF23 9 or any other Welsh Wales Volunteers, please

Message:
Hello, my mum (Chris Evans, Cardiff) has had chickens from you for the last few years but she's almost 82 now and struggling with her back and has also had a mini stroke.
She's managed really well up to now but is practically bed bound at the moment with sciatica so feels it's too much for her and is looking to rehome them. She has 7 and they are really healthy and laying well. I think I brought her to get these ones from you last summer, but can't remember the date sorry. I think we got all 7 then but maybe some are from a previous time.
Are you able to help at all? I know you usually only home rescue chickens but thought you may have some contacts or could point us in the right direction. Any help would be great, thank you very much, Kirsten

Some of our wonderful farmers are holding onto the hens that were due to be rehomed during lockdown, at their own expense, rather than send them to slaughter. This means that when all this horrible lockdown stuff is over, we are going to have thousands and thousands of hens that need rehoming quickly.

If you're interested in rehoming after lockdown you can register your interest by going to www.freshstartforhens.co.uk and completing the form. This will help us to allocate homes as quickly as possible.

Can we also ask you to like our page Barry Fresh Start For Hens and encourage your friends to like it as well. This will help us spread the word quicker and easier as soon as we can start rehoming again.

And finally, we would like to ask you all to take the utmost care of yourselves. You are all amazing people and we want you to be healthy, happy and virus free.

Stay safe and we will see you on the other side of this, for the biggest, happiest, most fun, rehome we will ever have had!

08/04/2020

Thank you for your patience with hearing an update from us regarding the 18th April rehome.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, we have had to regrettably postpone this rehome date. Please do not worry as the hens are safe and we will go back to rehome them at a later date.

In the meantime we will move reservations across to the waiting list.

If you haven't reserved with us and would like to be added to our waiting list, please fill in the form on our website www.freshstartforhens.co.uk

We will be in touch with you once we do have a new date.

All the best from the Fresh Start Team.

30/03/2020

Hello everyone. I thought I would just update you on the situation relating to rehoming.

All future sessions have been postponed. We have no way to predict when we will be able to restart rehomings. Information will be posted here and on Fresh Start's main page.

The farmer who booked us for the next two rehomings is able to keep her hens, so we needn't worry about them. This is not the case for all farmers, so we will restart as soon as it is safe.

For now, stay safe - stay at home if you can. If you are a key worker and still working, thank you for your service.

FSFH and COVID-19

Anyone who knows us will know we are down to earth and practical, as well as passionate about rehoming hens!
We will continue doing this with the same passion for as long as possible throughout the COVID-19 situation.

Volunteers have all been briefed, and we would like to share with you our plans for carrying on, without drama, through this difficult time - the hens are depending on us!

Collection Points
Some of our collection point hosts may have to self isolate. We are lucky that we have a dedicated team of helpers, and so wherever possible we will continue to run the collection points as planned. However, changes may need to be made at the last minute, so please keep a close eye on your emails - if you have supplied a mobile number, we will also send you a text message to alert you to a new email.

If we have to close a collection point at short notice, we will email and text you with as much notice as possible, ideally giving you an alternative location to collect from, or worst case scenario, moving you to a future date.

We may have to alter driver routes at short notice, which could have an impact on your collection times - again, as much notice as possible will be given.

Self isolating rehomers.
If you have had to self isolate but are still well enough to collect your hens, please contact your collection point and let them know.

When you arrive at the CP, remain in your vehicle and phone the CP host (the number will be on your email).
They will box up your hens and bring them to your vehicle/designated collection spot, giving you the thumbs up when your full number are ready. After they have retreated, you may leave your vehicle and load your hens. We will mark the paperwork on your behalf, so no need to sign.

Last minute cancellations.
If you are too unwell to collect your hens and have no-one else who can collect on your behalf, please let the collection point host know, AND email [email protected], giving as much notice as possible.
If you do this, we can move your reservation to a future date or refund your donation, if you prefer.
We do not issue refunds to rehomers who simply do not show up without contacting us, although we do listen to you if you get in touch :)

We are trying hard to maintain a balance and keep saving these hens with minimal drama. We will keep you informed of any updates to our policies.

Please keep yourselves and your loved ones well, as far as you can

Could you give a feathery friend a home?

We are a not for profit organisation, run entirely by volunteers who are dedicated to rehoming hens from the commercial egg production sector.

OUR AIM is to ensure as many people as possible are aware of the plight of the commercial hen, and demonstrate that there are alternatives to early slaughter.

OUR COMMITMENT is to rehome as many hens as we can into suitable homes, where they can live out the rest of their natural lives.

OUR GOAL is to educate the public about the ethical benefits of buying free range eggs, whilst supporting the work of British farmers. Commercially, all laying hens are slaughtered at the age of 72 weeks, when their production drops slightly. Their carcasses are worth very little and are usually sold for dog food, baby food or cheap, processed pies etc. We work closely with British farmers and purchase the hens from the caged, barn and free range systems, just before their slaughter date.
