THE CLUB'S 15TH STROKE AWARENESS DAY
Together with members of St John Ambulance, the Rotary Club of Basildon Concord, held at Eastgate Shopping Centre, Basildon on Saturday 27th April, their 15th year of testing people's blood pressure. This is all to ensure that people that are prepared to be tested, are not running the risk of having too high a reading of their systolic and diastolic levels. These readings are taken by members of St John Ambulance, who will advise people of their results and explain what is either a low reading, average/normal reading and particularly to those with a high reading.
Those who have a higher reading than normal after several tests, are advised to see their GP for a further assessment. Too high a reading is a warning sign that there is an increased risk of a Stroke. Overall, we tested 94 people and found the percentage of those that were advised to seek the opinion of their GP at 23 percent.
It was an interesting day, and we had a visitor that we tested a gentleman who works for MP's and Parliament as a Government Policy advisor on men's health - Mr Mark Brooks. He talked with us for some time about his work and showed great interest in what we were doing and praised all our efforts both Rotary and St John in providing health awareness to provide the service that we are giving.
The picture shows left to right: Danny Lovey of Basildon Concord Club, Mark Brooks Government Policy adviser, Barbara Osman and Penny Bryant, both of St John Ambulance
On Saturday, 4 members of the Unit Team were supporting The Rotary Club of Basildon Concord with their Stroke awareness day and we were in attendance to take members of the public's blood pressure and we have supported this event over 14 years (Apart from During Covid).
On the day we had taken 95 Blood Pressures, but these Blood Pressure checks are of course voluntary.
we believe that by providing this service we can potentially save lives every year we run this event and every year we find people who don't know their blood pressure or haven't checked it in years and Young adults and Teenagers often don't remember ever having it checked because this test leads some people recommended to visit their local GP for a full blood pressure test
