D S Cullis Professional Painter and Decorator
City & Guilds qualified painter and decorator with over 20 years experience in the trade. Many happy
I don't often get to see rooms with new furniture etc but back in Upton Grey today and took a couple of pics of the lounge I did a few weeks ago. Clients have done a cracking job of matching paint to the new sofas creating a really nice space.
Clients just wanted a colour change in their beautiful new build in Upton Grey. Smoke grey in Regal Flat emulsion from Benjamin Moore looks stunning against the doors and woodwork.
I don't think I've ever been busier but you know what ? It's great! Transforming tired looking rooms into something that people love and making their homes home is so rewarding. Loving my job!
Another HSL. Tikkurila Optiva 5 on the walls, Benjamin Moore satin Scuff X on the trim and Teknos black satin on the handrail. Doors are being replaced
Pink hallway !! Walls Tikkurila and Benjamin Moore scuff X on the woodwork and I fitted some new black door handles. One very happy pink loving customer!
Watch this space, this one's gonna be interesting !!
Just wanted to say a big thank you to all the recommendations you (my fabulous customers) have put out there recently. It helps me massively because reputation is everything when bringing new work in. Thank you.
Just a quick word to say thank you to all my customers who have supported me this year in the most difficult of times. I wish you all a safe 2021, and lets hope this time next year we'll be bumping into each other in the pub and sharing a glass or two.
Just about the last job of 2020, refurbed this door for a client.
Current job, Benjamin Moore Scuff X on the walls looks great and is absolutely bombproof!
Work in progress. All Benjamin Moore paint on this one and the blue really looks good
Hi All, I have a new mobile number 07723021174
Hi Guys, just a quick reminder that if I've done any work for you in the last few months I would really appreciate a review, thank you and hope you're all doing OK.
Ok so I am starting to get a bit bored now so here's a few pictures from the last few years, Apologies if I've posted before but I'm pretty rubbish at taking pictures of my work so don't really have that many
Just a quick word to say that in these difficult times if any of you need any help please please get in touch, bit of shopping, chemist, anything to help.
A little late perhaps but i'd just like to wish all my customers a happy new year, and to say thank you to all my existing customers for continuing to use me, and a thank you to all my new customers. I look forward to a busy year and wish you all good health and happiness.
Something that has always really annoyed me is the high price of ink for my HP printer. Ink mark up for HP must be massive so I bought these and they work fine and saved myself around £60, so I thought I'd share :

Hi all, I would be very grateful if anyone that I've worked for could take the time to write a few lines in the recommended section, thank you.
How cool is this, lots of designs to choose from, or how about painting your stair risers with chalk paint and writing whatever you want?
Finished and thank you very much Andy.
Watch this space !
Another Hall stairs and Landing papered from top to bottom
3.5 metre drop with very thin paper, looks really nice though, symmetry in the pattern shows how much the walls are out but despite this I think it's always more important to get the pattern centred.
Last weeks mission accomplished
Shaggy Dog Story !
I'll bet if you trotted off down to any of the popular DIY stores this bank holiday weekend you'll see a bunch of enthusiasts itching to get their hands on some lovely Dulux paint. Why? Colour range? nothing better than dozens of other brands, Richness/pigmentation of colour? nope, very standard synthetic pigment. Ease of use then? Dries so quickly it causes horrible roller marks and flashing. Price? as a standard paint (rather than premium) it's quite expensive. So why why why use it? Because of the big fluffy dog, an instantly recognisable association with a product which lets us believe it's the best. Clever marketing which we pay for. I am reliably informed that production price of a tub of supermatt is around £5, it retails at £35-40. I can also tell you that a few years ago Dulux openly admitted a reduction in quality of their paints, I think the spiel was something like "we have reduced quality to remain competitive placing our products in the standard market place rather than premium."
So we as consumers need to understand the importance of value over price. If you do choose Dulux, go for the trade tins, these can be thinned to taste, have better pigmentation and give better value for money because a standard litre will cover more wall area than an off the shelf can. But really Crown and Johnstones are a better option, again choose the trade versions.
I hope you all have a great bank holiday weekend !
Here's a small practice piece of marbling for a unit top i'm going to do. First time i've ever done it with acrylics, it needs softening a bit more but quite pleased with it.
I am very pleased to say I can now supply paints and colours from Benjamin Moore. BM is a leading premium paint manufacturer in North America and frankly the depth of colour along with durability and range of colours beats anything else currently available in the UK. As a premium brand it still beats farrow & Ball and Little Greene on price and is far superior to anything Dulux or Crown can produce.

Thank you Amanda McKay for showing me this great idea to cover up scruffy light switches. When I was 27 I decided to retrain as a painter and decorator. I signed up for a 2 year city & Guilds NVQ level 2 at Reading College. I was very fortunate to have some excellent teachers including Derek Butterfield who now abbreviates the book Painting and Decorating known as the painters bible.
So some 20 odd years later I’m still in the trade and more importantly enjoying it more than ever. I firmly believe you are only ever as good as your last job and never walk away with unhappy clients.
I specify quality materials to compliment my clients day to day living, blending colour with easy maintenance through the correct paint choices.
