As Pelican moves forward into 2024/2025, we reflect on some of our achievements over the last 12 months. Much of the Pelican Team’s time has been spent planning and delivering our education programmes to enable cancer specialists from across the UK and internationally to advance their understanding of diagnosis and precision treatment of bowel cancer.

As the only Charity in the UK committed solely to the research, education, and advancement of precision surgery for bowel cancer and its associated secondary diseases, particularly in the liver, we have big goals.

Progress does not stand still, new technologies and advances in cancer treatment are revolutionising the way we diagnose and treat the disease. Through our courses and workshops, we are continually raising the standards of surgical treatment and clinical outcomes for patients with bowel cancer not just locally but throughout the country and internationally.

Every charity needs income to achieve its ambitions and it is only thanks to our supporters that we were able to deliver 6 local educational courses in Basingstoke and launch our 5th National Educational Programme, OReCO (Optimising Re**al Cancer Outcomes) which will see 20 one day workshops delivered throughout the UK from January 2024 to December. 2026.

Bowel cancer is one of the most curable cancers if detected early. Five-year survival rates for bowel cancer have doubled over the last 40 years, thanks to greater awareness and earlier detection of the disease, and improving treatment.

With optimal treatment and surgery, more cures are possible with bowel cancer than with all the other internal cancers added together.
There is more that has to be done to make bowel cancer treatment more precise and more patients suitable for curative surgery for liver metastases.

Patients diagnosed with early disease are nearly twice as likely to survive and therefore we have to encourage more screening and treatment for early disease.

Bowel cancer screening can spot the early signs of bowel cancer and it saves lives. Regular screening is important.

Thank-you to Vistry House Building Thames Valley who have made a £1000 contribution to the Pelican Cancer Foundation which has enabled the charity to purchase a new state of the art pan tilt camera to help train surgeons by enabling bowel cancer operations to be broadcast live.

Staff at the Reading-based housebuilder became aware of the charity’s work after one of their colleagues was diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Daphne Robertson, CEO at the Pelican Cancer Foundation, said: “Pelican is a medical research and education charity and the only charity in the UK dedicated solely to the research, training and advancement of precision surgery for bowel cancer and its associated secondary diseases.”

“We are very grateful to Vistry for its generous donation of £1,000 which has been used to purchase a pan tilt camera, which will enable us to broadcast live filming of surgical procedures directly to the training classroom.”

“Pelican’s educational courses are attended by medical professionals from across the UK and internationally. Patients with bowel cancer will have a better chance of living well for longer thanks to the success of Pelican training courses in advancing the skills and understanding of surgeons and their cancer teams.”

Amber Bowley, regional sales director for Vistry Thames Valley, said: “We were all devastated to hear of our colleague’s diagnosis with bowel cancer. It really brought it home to all of us how prevalent this disease is and how it affects the lives of so many people. The latest NHS statistics show that one in two people will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime which is a frightening thought."

“Through our colleague we became aware of the amazing work that the Pelican Cancer Foundation does to try to improve the lives and survival rates of people suffering with bowel cancer. It really is encouraging to know that the camera that has been purchased with our donation will assist with the training of surgeons and help improve outcomes for cancer patients.”

The symptoms of bowel cancer can be subtle and do not necessarily make you feel unwell. Keep a record of your symptoms including when they started, when they happen, how often you have them and if anything changes.

If anything changes, consult your GP for further advice.

Know your normal!

Colore**al cancer can seem a lot like other common gastrointestinal disorders, including haemorrhoids, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative Colitis. They usually have many of the same symptoms, however there are a few important differences.

The key fact is that these different symptoms are persistent and stick around for more than a few days, so it is important to know your normal.

If something isn’t quite right; if you have any symptoms of bowel cancer for 3 weeks of more, or if you have any concerns, please contact your GP to seek advice.

Bowel Cancer is a general term for cancer that begins in the large bowel. Depending on where the cancer starts, bowel cancer is sometimes called colon or re**al cancer.

On our website you can find a wealth of information to help support you and your family.

Bowel Cancer is the 4th most common cancer in the UK and the 2nd biggest cancer killer. Every year nearly 43,000 people are diagnosed and sadly more than 16,500 people die of it. However, it can be treatable and curable if diagnosed early. Surgery often remains the most effective treatment for bowel cancer.

Today, the life expectancy and quality of life for many bowel cancer patients is greatly improved than what it was just 10 years ago. Eighty percent of cases can be successfully treated if diagnosed early, often by surgery.

The quality of surgery and surgical skills are constantly evolving and Pelican, with associated surgeons, has been at the forefront of innovation in colore**al surgery and precision treatment. Pelican has run four national development programmes for colore**al cancer specialists.

These have included thousands of people attending workshops across the UK and Ireland:
2003 – 2007: MDT-TME (Multi-Disciplinary Team-Total Mesore**al Excision) National Development Programme
2009 – 2012: LOREC(Low Re**al Cancer) Development Program
2014 – 2017: SPECC (Significant Polyp and Early Colore**al Cancer) Programme
2018 – 2020: IMPACT (Improving Management for Patients with Advanced Colore**al Tumours)

Good Luck Scott Whelan running the London Marathon on Sunday 21st April 2024.

“I'm really looking forward to it and the fundraising is going well so far! One more long run (20/22 miles) to do and then tapering till the event .... “ Scott Whelan’s comments to us as he approaches the final few weeks until the London Marathon on Sunday 21st April 2024.

Scott will be running to help raise awareness of the great work Pelican Cancer Foundation has done to help his Dad over the last 8 years.

“My dad was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer in 2016. Over the last 8 years he has completed 26 rounds of Chemotherapy, 7 operations (bowel, liver and lung) and had 19 tumours removed! Dad has remained incredibly positive, resilient and defiant throughout his procedures and his focus has always been on his family, ensuring that we are all ok!

On a positive note he has just been given the ‘all clear’ after a recent scan and has a 6-month reprieve from being poked and prodded!

Dad’s incredibly positive attitude has been infectious, and I believe he has inspired so many people around him to take stock and prioritise what is important in life. Incredibly, whilst going through this, Dad and Mum have raised over £5000 for cancer support charities! This inspired me to complete the Great North Run where I raised over £2000. I have run 3 more half marathons since which has inspired me to complete this challenge! 26.2 miles is a horrible distance!

There is no doubt that medical advances and the work of the Pelican Cancer Foundation have saved my Dad’s life but there is so much more to do. More funding is required for critical research and development with the ultimate goal to cure this indiscriminate disease.

I would really appreciate any donations to support the Pelican Cancer Foundation in their incredible work.”
