make such good mothers. Attentive but calm. Milky but clean.

They also have lively, up-and-at-em calves.

Their gestation period is short and they’re known for being easy to calve.

They thrive on a grass based diet, are happy to forage and hardy enough to winter out the world over.

They live long lives and yet mature early.

Their meat has natural marbling which is thought to be tender and flavourful.

They’re docile and easy to handle.

This, and more, if true must surely be why they say

But does it?

If it does then surely a terminal sire is highly sought after and in an industry that increasingly desires an end product produced with a low carbon footprint that nourishes and protects our beautiful countryside producers would be queing up to get their hands on a - But are they?

Surely a premium should be placed on genetics that we are proud to produce?

Perhaps my head has been turned by here that I know can and do achieve the above but surely our pedigree sales should be swarming with commercial and pedigree cattle breeders alike who know their worth? Perhaps we owe it to this iconic native breed to take a stronger stance to show exactly what they’re about, to let science test it and then promote the figures that prove it!

Hereford’s either do or they don’t do it all. If they do, and I suggest they do…make sure you ask your butcher for next time you’re buying some beef or look out for it on the label in your supermarket, spot them in the fields and tell others how fantastic they are at providing food whilst sustaining grassland biodiversity and preserving our beautiful countryside.

And thank you.

If Brits didn’t talk about the weather…

Or own the biggest failures in world history as entirely theirs…

Or queue at every opportunity…

And create sports out of amusing painful endeavours…

As well as favour eccentricity, tea drinking and sarcasm at every juncture…

We wouldn’t be British.

We said goodbye to on Saturday. It’s been quite a week with both him and leaving, it feels a bit like the changing of the guard!

What an absolute star he’s been here at a bit of a trailblazer in these pastures, he’ll be missed for sure but he leaves some superb daughters behind to take the flock into the next generation.

All the very best grazing the sunny slopes near Petersfield Abraham. X

• Weybrook 1 Dawn 29th UK281577 300279 by

They look the part and we think are the real deal.

Devon is a chip off the old block with length and depth, he’s quiet and honest with a stylish air befitting a pedigree bull. Naturally grown and dark. Out of our oldest cow who always does her calves well, his full sisters are staying on the herd.

Dawn 29th is strong and fashionably elegant with beautiful feminine markings while at the same time showing off the kind of attributes that made her Dad a superior carcase sire. Currently running with Devon as she’s out of our stock bull. Can hopefully be PD’d soon.

Both Devon and Dawn 29th are along with a few other females from our herd here.

Do get in touch if you’d like more info and you’d be welcome to visit us soon.

On 12 May 1943 apparently the cows got out but also, Harold Arthur Hatt was born at Weybrook Farm in an arable & dairy farm, the hub of the local community & the place he was to call home all his life. The middle child of three, with a sister either side, he had great success at mischief making - a personality trait that remained true to the end.

With a keen interest in stockmanship, a passion for bloodlines & pedigrees, success came quickly in the show ring with pedigree British Friesians, the Weybrook prefix being etched into many a piece of silverware & bulls & females highly sought after in the dairy world.

By the mid-1990s the urban sprawl was putting pressure on the dairy & with both sadness & dignified pragmatism Harold took the farm in a new direction which enabled him to set up charitable ventures to benefit many elderly & vulnerable people. He also took on the challenge of a pedigree beef suckler herd that would maintain & sustain the farm he loved.

Ahead of his time, he planted trees and hedges, set up low input farming systems & wanted to find cattle that would fit this farming ethos supporting wildlife & the natural environment. With this in mind he fell in love with the docile, reliable, versatile, white faced Hereford & never turned back. Unafraid of the challenge & using his keen eye for quality cattle, he set about finding correct animals with a quiet temperament to form the beginnings of a new poll Hereford herd. It wasn’t long before he found success in showing once again, the stash of rosettes mounting up alongside requests for him to judge cattle and livestock in general.

Even more enduring than his gathering of prizes was the integrity with which he conducted his business. Many have commented on his honesty in business & his genuine care & interest in people. He had a shepherd heart. He was a gentleman.

His Christian faith, was the most important thing in his life, & the hope this brings through trusting in Jesus is a great comfort.

The stars are out.

It’s a beautiful night to be born.

It’s also soggy from the snow thaw and a chilly -2C but Herefords don’t seem to mind. See more up on stories.

💫

“ To everything there is a season, and a time for every matter or purpose under heaven:
A time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted…
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He also has planted eternity in men’s hearts and minds [a divinely implanted sense of a purpose working through the ages which nothing under the sun but God alone can satisfy], yet so that men cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.
I know that there is nothing better for them than to be glad and to get and do good as long as they live;
And also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor—it is the gift of God.
I know that whatever God does, it endures forever; nothing can be added to it nor anything taken from it “ - Ecclesiastes 3

Surprise, surprise.

Typical of native breeds lambs are vigorous, born with tight skins and quick to get up and suckle and they also make brilliant mothers. This ewe lamb is just a year old and here with twin ram lambs and no assistance required. Reared and fed on grass as part of a low input farming system.
