Chineham 12 - 26 Petersfield A fast start from the visitors was the difference between the two sides this afternoon at HQ, in pretty horrendous conditions. Backed by the infamous Chineham slope, Petersfield combined a strong driving maul with some clever cross field kicks to race into a 21-0 lead within the first ten minutes. Chineham rallied and after some strong carries by the forwards, Boo Wells tumbled over to continue his impressive try scoring form. The conversion from the custard patch was missed, and after another driving maul the home side took a 26-5 deficit into half time. A much better second half showing buoyed the valiant home crowd, and after having one quick tap try disallowed, Jack Soper, ably assisted by Matty Mullin took advantage of another quick tap to score near the sticks, the conversion was added to bring the scores to 26-12. Despite a strong finish, and some promising debuts, missed opportunities meant that was how the score line finished. Tries; Wells, Soper Con; Soper MOM; Sam Athroll DOD; None awarded Next week the Lions take on table toppers Havant away from home!
Andover 36-12 Another good shift put in by the boys against one of the better teams in our league. A very even first half was reflected on the scoreboard, with an early pushover try from Andover the only score early on. A flurry of cards punctuated the second quarter as both teams dropped 14 as Jack Martin and his opposite number were sin binned for a minor case of handbags, and shortly after returning to a full compliment, Matt Lingham saw a harsh looking yellow for having a very characteristic moan. Despite numerical supremacy, Andover were pinned back and after a number of good phases the unstoppable Boo Wells cleverly reached over the breakdown to grab his 6th try of the season, meaning Chineham ended the half and Linghamβs binning with the scores level at 5-5. A sloppy 15 after the break allowed a couple of quick Andover scores, despite some great defensive efforts, notably Ben Goodman and Phil Circou with some great hits. Chineham hit back again through a quick tap from Soper which saw him barrel over, adding the extras himself to take the game to 19-12. The Lions then squandered a few line out opportunities in the opponents 22, and as we began to chase the game Andover took advantage with some great counter attacking rugby. The introduction of Mike Amor and a reunion with fellow bash brother Wells in the row saw Chineham exert some scrum dominance (see below) but unfortunately we couldnβt capitalise on this. The game finished with the Lions repelling the opposition on their own line so great to see the spirit strong until the end! Tries; Wells, Soper Cons; Soper MoTM; Soper DOD; Martin (slightly shading Lingham) Thanks to all those who travelled in support, and the camera skills of Mike Raplh allowing us to enjoy some scrum porn! We return to action at HQ next week, so come on down and support the boys! #COYL
Chineham 26 - 38 Southampton After much disruption and many changes to the posted team pre match, a brave effort from the boys in gold at HQ this afternoon. Chineham started strong roaring into a 14-0 lead courtesy of a rampaging score from Chris Dorling and a close range finish from scrum half Michael Jacob, both converted by Jack Soper. Southampton hit back with a short range score out wide and a length of the field (including the metre outside of the touchline) score from the visitors impressive 13. A clever kicking game from the Chineham 9 resorted in another score from Tom Scoble out wide, taking us into half time 19-14 to the good. The third quarter saw the game swing back and forth, with Southampton crossing twice and Chineham adding another through Jacobs (video attached), impressively converted by debutant James Dias. Injuries began to take their toll in the final quarter, and Southampton added two late scores to take the game away from the Lions, although we picked up a attacking bonus point so at least we take something from the game. Massive thanks to the boys who stepped up late in the day to help out the side, great to see Keegan Wicks, Tim Boulter, Tom Watts and Rich Boddy make their first appearances of the season, alongside debutant James Dias. Tries: Dorling, Jacob (2), Scoble Conv: Soper (2), Dias DOD: Kian Winters & Rich Boddy (Hair) MOM: Michael Jacob (Contentious) Thanks again for all the support, it was great to see another large crowd to cheer on the boys! No game next weekend so an opportunity for the boys to rest the rigs. COYL
