Well deserved recognition for your strength, bravery and hard work!

The results of our client survey are in & we are very pleased to say that a whopping 98.6% of those who took part said they would be highly likely to recommend our work to others, with 70% commending us for excellent service.
Obviously, we will not be resting on our laurels - there is always room for improvement - but it was great to see so many clients taking time to let us know they were happy with our work. Thanks to all the clients who took part. We promised a yummy hamper to one lucky participant and the first name out of the hat was founder Charity Nichols.

We couldn’t be prouder of Tom & Michael, who have both just been promoted to the new role of Associate Director. Both originally joined Richardson Swift as trainees and after qualifying as chartered accountants took up roles as client advisers. They will both continue to look after client portfolios as well as supporting the senior management team at board level on the strategic development of the business. So they are going to be busy! Find out more about Tom, Michael and the rest of the team here https://www.richardsonswift.co.uk/why-us/our-people

Hang on, a 2p cut in National Insurance as the centre piece of the budget statement! Have we gone back in time?
No, the big reveal of the Chancellor’s Spring Budget today, really was the same as the one he used in the Autumn statement last year.

To be fair to Jeremy Hunt, the move may have lacked imagination but it does mean a drop from 10% to 8% in the main rate of NI and from 8% to 6% for the self-employed.
This cut was made possible by, according to the Chancellor, by revenue-raising initiatives such as abolishing non-dom tax status, furnished holiday let relief, multiple dwelling relief, introducing tax on vapes and extending the windfall levy on oil and gas companies. However, other than a modest increase in the long standing VAT threshold to £90,000, at first glance there appears to have been very little at all to help small to medium sized businesses, who have been battling against rising wages and costs for some time now, causing margins to be squeezed with limited wriggle room and a tight labour market.

Here’s a summary of the main points:
• National Insurance cut by 2p in the pound for employees and the self-employed
• Non-dom tax regime, for UK residents whose permanent home is overseas, to be replaced with new rules from April 2025. Whilst this appears a simplification, to fully analyse the likely impact between the “ultra wealthy” and “other” non doms, we will need to see the transitional rules.
• Full child benefits to be paid to households where highest-earning parent earns up to £60,000
• £5,000 "British ISA" tax allowance for individual savers to invest in UK-listed companies
• Freeze on alcohol duty, which had been due to end in August, to continue until February 2025
• New tax on va**ng products to start in October 2026, following a consultation
• Existing tax on to***co to increase, to maintain the "financial incentive to choose va**ng over smoking"
• Fuel duty frozen again, with the 5p cut in fuel duty on petrol and diesel, due to end later this month, kept for another year
• "Windfall" tax on the profits of energy firms, which had been scheduled to end in March 2028, extended until 2029
• Air passenger duty, the tax paid on flights, to go up for business class tickets
• Higher rate of capital gains tax paid on profits from selling residential property cut from 28% to 24% from 6 April 2024 – supposedly to ignite the residential property market
• Tax breaks for owners of holiday let properties scrapped
• Threshold at which small businesses must register to pay VAT raised from £85,000 to £90,000 from April

So, if tax cuts were top of your wish list for tomorrow’s budget, looks like you’re in for a day of disappointment.

Despite hints in last year’s Autumn Statement, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has been signalling recently that there is little scope for further cuts.

The Times reported that Hunt’s gloomy reference to “major structural weaknesses” in the UK economy, casts doubt on the possibility of significant cuts.

And speaking on the BBC’s Political Thinking podcast, the Chancellor said:
“It doesn’t look to me like we will have the same scope for cutting taxes in the Spring Budget that we had in the Autumn Statement. But we also want to be clear that the direction of travel we want to go in is to lighten the tax burden.”

The RS team will be producing a detailed summary of the Budget and insight into the effects of any changes for you to download and keep for reference. For your copy go to: https://knowledge.richardsonswift.co.uk/autumnstatement-0

It's always great when a plan comes together and this one has worked so well that we'd like to give a little 'Yay!' to our co-conspirators & . It's a year since we started running the Breakfast Exchange together in Bath. The plan was always to provide a support network for local businesses, help them develop connections that they could turn to when times were tough, chat through challenges and inspire each other. And the positive response we've had from the business community has blown us away! So a big thank you to the wonderful and inspirational panellists who have supported us by sharing their stories: Simon Rollings Wine Co., Steph Wilder , Richard Godfrey , James Lowther , Emma Summers , Dieter Wood , Raife Wieland .co.uk, and David Kelly Consultancy. Not forgetting from & John Davies from
And of course (we missed you this time) , , who developed the idea and organise the events and for hosting.
And a huge thank you to the many people from local businesses and organisations who give up their time to be there. See below for pics from last week's event. If you weren't there get in touch on [email protected] to be added to the guest list.

Richardson Swift Tax Director Jon Miles commented on the Chancellor's announcements.
"We'll be looking at the full implications of the statement but the headlines around corporation tax cuts initially seem a little misleading. Full expensing was announced for 'qualifying new main rate plant and machinery investments' from 1 April 2023 until 31 March 2026 and this reportedly allows companies to write off the cost of investment in one go and also is said to be a 'permanent tax break' for businesses that allows them to save on corporation tax by investing. In reality, however, we think most small to medium businesses will not go over the £1m expenditure threshold, which already attracts a 100% write off under the Annual Investment Allowance. So, in reality there is likely to be very little benefit for most SMEs."
