This is not a pantomime; thereโll be no singing, dames or cheesy punchlines. This is the story of people who tried to thrive, but exist in a bleak world, where to live is to barely survive.
Youโve heard of Dick Whittington, of rags to riches fame, but his success was not his own to claim. This is Catโs story - a tale for our century - asking if those who have nothing, can someday something be.
Premiering in 2021 at SparkFest, Gabrielle Finnegan brought the classic folk tale in to the 21st Century through fanciful realism with a political edge. Cat and Her Whittington explores the issues facing working class people today and tells the story of what it is like to be failed by the system we live in.
โฆand we have been working away behind the scenes! Keep your eyes peeled ๐ for whatโs next!

Hello! Tonight is our opening night for Cat and Her Whittington, so we thought we'd tell you our story!
The idea for CAHW came from a schools tour of the 'Dick Whittington and his Cat' pantomime that Gabrielle Finnegan did with Billie-Jo Rainbird and Charlie Cocker. Billie is part of Andraste&Co Theatre Company and you can catch their show 'Sugar, Honey, Ice, Tea' at 7pm 8th June, as part of SparkFest. Charlie has also created a ditigal show for , 'Home Sweet', which you can watch here: https://youtu.be/G8tkd8vgRWk
Having done the tour, Gabrielle wanted to retell the Dick Whittington story from a Marxist, feminist perspective, as she didn't agree with some of the content in the pantomime, feeling its message of working hard to succeed didn't account for all the hold backs working class people face when looking for jobs and trying to build careers, and that it's hero built his off of someone else's skill... Sparkfest was calling out for creatives, so she though she'd give it a go, and decided to write the play in verse, having written another play in a similar style for Greedy Pig Theatre Company.
Having no idea how to produce the play, she asked her friends at Greedy Pig Theatre Company for advice, and they recommended Holly Jefferies, who Gabrielle had worked with before, and was desperate to work with again! She then asked her bestie Lucy Brown if she'd be up for directing, as she knew Lucy wanted to get back into her creative flow! Gabrielle asked her sister, Dominique Finnegan, to make the artwork for the socials, and our stunning poster.
Having pulled our creative team together, it was then time to cast. We held online auditions, and ended up casting the wonderful Toby Underwood and Rebecca Wake. We did Zoom rehearsals with actors, plus Zoom meetings with Holly and Lucy sorting out all the tec, the liason with and SparkFest, the forms, risk assessments, contracts, and funding. Gabrielle made script changes, with help from Holly and Lucy, and the actors took on the mammoth task of learning their many lines! We all did this whilst working other jobs, and of course, dealing with the pandemic, and the restrictions it imposed on our process, as well as our lives!
We finally got into physical rehearsals a week ago- making sure we regularly covid tested, and followed social distancing measures when we were not on stage. The week has flown by and yet feels like a lifetime! In addition to rehearsals, we've been fylering, visiting venues, doing our marketing, promoting the show wherever we can (big thanks to for a lot of that!), inviting guests, and generally working our socks off!
And now, it's almost go time! We cannot wait for you to see our play! We want want say another huge thank you to our donors for your support in getting us funded, thanks to everyone who has bought and ticket (and who will be buying one for tonight ;) ), to everyone who has promoted us on their socials, and a big thanks to Kerry Irvine for helping us with everything and believing in the project!
See you tonight at 9pm at Widcombe Social Club, for our play, Cat and Her Whittington!
