One good side effect of our heatwave is that some maturer customers in the shop are saying “To hell with worrying about ‘b***o’ wings, I’m going sleeveless”. I have been fighting our ingrained cultural prejudices about ANY part of our beautiful physical bodies, and it has always saddened me when anyone says they don’t like exposing a part of their body that would have been unremarkable when younger. Upper arms and our muscles generally become less firm with age, and I like to embrace that softness, that herstory/history. They have served us well, allow them to relax! Hiding upper arms also hides one of my favourite parts of the body - the shoulder and the dimple therein.

ANOKHI in a nutshell
ANOKHI was founded in 1970 in Jaipur, India as a company specialising in the manufacture (literally, made by hand!) of hand block-printed textiles. As a company it has always embodied the principals of ’fair trade’, even though it does not fly that banner, and strives to conduct its business in an environmentally responsible manner.
Through the ‘70s and into the early ‘80s they were the main supplier to Monsoon. Later they were a core element in the East company. But it is in India itself where the company has really thrived and developed. They have textile shops in all the major cities, presenting a constantly changing collection of beautiful hand-made home furnishings and garments which have earned them a worldwide following and a reputation as a leader in the world of Indian textiles.
ANOKHI Bath & Wells originated from ANOKHI Jaipur, and in its earliest days only sold the Anokhi label. Over the years we introduced other labels to complement Anokhi, so that at the present time there are between 15 and 20 labels in our shops.
ANOKHI is the Hindi word for ‘unique’. We have tried over the years to keep this word in mind when choosing our collections. We love colour and unusual design, and are drawn towards collections which are different to the mainstream. We try to source collections which have an appeal to ‘the individual‘, and we feel that you, our customers, as individuals have responded to that.
