masak kurma - malay kurma doesn’t taste anything like indian korma, although the name “korma” is derived from the Urdu ḳormā or ḳormah, which means “to braise,” originating further from the Turkish kavurma, meaning “cooked meat”

the flavor of kurma dish is based on a mixture of spices, including ground coriander, cumin and the 4 friends of spices (cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and star anise)

veganizing kurma is so so easy, the same with many other malay dishes, you substitute the non-vegan meat with vegan meat or vegan protein sources 🥰

typical veggies in kurma includes, carrots, onions and potatoes

it’s such a mild curry (you can ofc make it thicker by using kerisik if you so wish) and flavorful curry, perfect if you’re not a good friend to chillies 🙈

these days i’m baking and making many different traditional malay desserts, testing recipes for my & ‘s supper club this july 🌞 here is bingka pandan (some people call it kuih bakar) - a dense custardy “cake” made with pandan juice and coconut milk, baked until you get that crispy edge which is my favorite part of the bingka, normally topped with sesame seed but i used poppy seed for this version, which gives the top that yummy crunchiness 😮‍💨 would you like to see a matcha pandan bingka at the supper club? 👀🍵🧪

The first time I’m making this dish on Asmaraloka! 🤟🏼‼️ This is my favorite dish in the whole world. If you don’t know, I’m from Penang, one of the states north of Malaysia where this curry originated. I am so lucky growing up; my grandmother would make this 3-4 times a week, and I would never get bored 🥺 I would have this with white rice, ladling it until the rice is flooded. That’s how you eat it 😋 Okra and tomatoes are the traditional veggies you put in this curry, so it’s not random at all! I’m so excited to let you try this! See you Saturday 🥰

This week’s nasi goreng kampung (village-style fried rice) is made by frying this pounded paste made of shallots, onions, garlic, chillies and vegan shrimp paste before putting the rice in to stir fry together with everything else! The smell coming from frying this paste is AMAZING - you gotta try the nasi goreng to know what I’m talking about!
