DJing my musical tastes at a unsuspecting public since 1991
The best book about music I’ve read this year.
A Newly Translated Oral History Reveals Krautrock’s Antifascist Roots Christoph Dallach’s book explores how Na**sm, a postwar German identity crisis and anti-authoritarian youth movements spurred some of the most daring experiments of 1970s music.
Now playing.
Miles Davis - Aura. (CBS. 1989)
A deep crate Davis favourite. This recording marks the first session to include John McLaughlin since “On The Corner”, it’s also the final Miles joint to be released in his lifetime.
A fine studio capture of the band he toured and recorded with post “breakdown” and subsequently right up to the day before he died. Featuring his nephew on drums and composed by Swedish arranger P***e Mikkelborg to celebrate Davis’ winning the Léonie Sonning Music Prize, often called the Nobel Prize for composition.
Ambient, robotic-mutant-funk of the highest standard. I first got this album when I was living in America some 25 years ago and its unique atmosphere has always stuck with me. I’m a fan of his final run on CBS of which “Aura” was a gateway.
Happy 33rd to the first Cypress Hill album.
A huge game changer for me personally and hip hop at large.
A masterpiece.

I have been thinking a lot about the evolution of electro-acoustic music since “In A Silent Way” by Miles Davis up to say “Only Love From Now On” by Carmen Villian. Not Miles as an existential influence but as a direct lineage. Producers that continued the tradition of mixing acoustic instrumentation with jazz, dub, hip-hop, breaks, ambient and experimental forms.
We’re in a halcyon period of this sort of action now, festivals like Sonar, Supernormal and Primavera showcase plenty of folks with laptops and clarinets, but the forms very rich late 80’s / 90’s period remains strangely obscure. Barely available on streaming (other than YouTube) even though much of it was released on major labels at the time and had some seriously heavyweight contributors.
These two albums sum this up for me perfectly and I recommend them wholeheartedly to anyone interested in this area. Unsurprisingly this is all a something of a practice run for a longer piece I’ve been brewing on for the blog that will hopefully emerge soon.

During the honeymoon period of Kindles the book business was told it was by various tech bros/Richard Branson MBA types that printed media was “over.” This was all until folks realised Kindles, though useful, were literally just tools, devoid of soul or any real emotional value, no matter how “convenient” they are.
Will the world finally adopt a similar attitude to music and the obvious horrors, exploitation of creatives and blatant capitalist grift it faces from hideous people like Daniel Eck?
Time will tell but maybe the tide of bu****it is finally turning, be it at a glacial pace.
The music industry is suffering from a streaming hangover After years of roaring growth, expectations are being re-priced and hopes pinned on superfans
Happy 29th “Timeless.”
