How heavy is your head? 🤔
Over the weekend I was lucky enough to attend the muscle testing seminar run by Ulrik Sandstrom.
This technique is a window into your nervous system, assessing how effectively your nerves are functioning and enabling your body to adapt to your environment, whether that be in an sporting setting or in general day-to-day life.
So here I am putting it into practice yesterday!

So, your horse isn’t being his usual self when you’re riding him. Maybe he’s playing up, is being unresponsive to your aids, is leaning on one rein, or is harder to bend one way than the other. Maybe you feel like he’s throwing you off balance, like you’re leaning to one side, or maybe one of your stirrups constantly feels longer than the other even after you’ve checked that your stirrup leathers are both on the same hole for the hundredth time. Naturally as the rider we focus on our horse first; his soundness, teeth, saddle fitting, shoeing – you name it, we check it. We often jump to the conclusion that the problem is stemming from our noble steed, but how often do we consider the influence of our own body and biomechanics on our horse’s behaviour and way of going?
Balance, flexibility and strength are among the core pillars required of a horse rider. If one of these is lost, the connection between the horse and rider is lost. From rider to rider, there is usually a similar pattern of muscle imbalances which lead to joint dysfunction. However, dysfunction doesn’t necessarily mean you experience any pain. Just like if a tree came down on a railway line and stopped the train getting from A to B, any muscle imbalance or joint dysfunction stemming from the rider will prevent effective communication being transmitted to the horse through our aids, whether that be through the seat, rein or leg. Without clear aids and support from the rider, the horse will become confused about what he is being asked to do and as a result may appear unresponsive or not behave in his usual manner.
From a chiropractic point of view, we are trained to pick up on these imbalances – often before they become apparent to you or cause any discomfort. We use a rage of Chiropractic and soft-tissue techniques during our treatment sessions, including; adjustments, myofascial release techniques, instrument-assisted tools and dry needling. We then look into the rehabilitation side of things for stretching and strengthening exercises to help maintain this correction long-term.
Horses and riders are a team. Just as you would check your horse out if he didn’t feel 100%, remember how much of an influence you have as the rider over his way of going too.
