In the UK, more than 2 million people are living with sight loss. Of these, around 340,000 are registered as blind or partially sighted. Being told you have a visual impairment can be difficult to come to terms with.
If you have never experienced low vision, it can sometimes be very difficult to understand what your loved ones, who may suffer from one of the many conditions that cause low vision, go through on a day-to-day basis.
To help raise awareness of what living with low vision is like Vision Matters, in connection with National Eye Health Week, have created a simulator to show just how difficult it can be living with these impairments.

If you have vision loss, it's still important to have regular sight tests so your optometrist can check for further changes in your eyes and give you advice about how to make the best use of your vision. To book with Mackey Opticians, please call your local branch our visit our website.

As we all know, these past few years, the NHS have been pushed to their limits. However, that doesn't stop people needing urgent help or advice when it comes to their eyes.
Like your local pharmacy can help with minor aliment clinics, your local optician likely can help you with minor eye conditions too. This will help take the strain off hospitals and GP surgeries.
Mackey Opticians offer NI-PEARS appointments, which are NHS funded appointments for emergencies and minor eye conditions, At all our branches. We will gladly advise you on whether your eye condition will require an NI-PEARS appointment or offer you advice on how best to help if an appointment isn’t applicable.

Today’s focus by National Eye Health Week is Children’s Eye Health. September is also Childhood Cancer Awareness Month so we would like to share an inspiring story about a young local girl called Aliyah to raise awareness for a very rare eye condition called Retinoblastoma.
Aliyah’s mum Melissa has shared some information about her journey:
"When Aliyah was only 15 months old, I noticed that Aliyah had a white pupil in a flash photograph and took her to her family opticians who then referred her urgently to the Royal Victoria Hospital. The doctors diagnosed her on the same day with unilateral retinoblastoma.”
Aliyah is now six years old and has never let it get in her way. She had to go through 5 cycles of Chemotherapy and 2 cycles of intro-arterial chemotherapy along with laser treatment. Aliyah ultimately ended up having her left eye removed at 21-months-old as the tumour was heading towards her optic nerve.
She’s now at primary school and doing great. She has also joined a local drama class as she loves performing and dancing and this keeps her confidence up. She wears glasses as she is long sighted in her right eye".
Aliyah was referred urgently to the Royal Victoria Hospital by her local opticians after they dilated her eyes and discovered an abnormality on her retina which turned out to be a rare tumour. Once the diagnosis was made, Aliyah made regular trips with her family to Birmingham Children’s Hospital where she underwent most of her treatment. Thanks to an early diagnosis and great care from the NHS, Aliyah beat her cancer.
If you have any concerns about your own child’s eye health never hesitate to contact your optician or GP for advice. Children can have a free eye examination at any age, and we recommend regular eye examinations from pre-school age. If there is a family history of long-sightedness or strabismus/” lazy eye”, please get them tested as young as 12-24 months. They do not have to be able to read letters
Follow the links below for more information and to continue spreading awareness for children like Aliyah.

The DVLA rules for driving state that a driver must be able to see a car number plate from 20 meters. You must also meet a minimum eyesight standard for driving by having a visual acuity of at least 6/12. If you don't meet these conditions unaided, then you will be required to wear glasses while driving!
While some may see this as an inconvenience, Mackey Opticians are here to put your mind at ease and let you know that no matter what your driving needs are, we have a lens to help you drive safely!
We recommend that you have your spectacle lenses fitted with an anti-reflection coating which reduced reflections throughout the day. If you are still struggling at night, we have a special ""EnRoute"" coating that is available for single vision and varifocal lenses and cuts down the glare that modern headlights and streetlights can give.
If you wear sunglasses, you can have these fitted with your prescription and these are also available polarised which reduces the glare especially when the sun is low which is very common for Northern Ireland unfortunately. Alternatively, photochromic lenses that change from light to dark (Transitions or Sensity) can now react behind the windscreen of a car although they can't have the extra benefit of being polarised. Or if glasses just aren't for you, we are happy to offer contact lens appointments where we can fit you with the perfect pair of contact lenses and teach you how to wear and care for them, to ensure you have the freedom to drive comfortably!
Please book an appointment at your local Mackey Opticians and we can discuss your individual driving needs to give you the best advice.

We will reopen as normal on Tuesday 20th.
With National Eye Health Week coming up on the 19th - 25th September 2022, here at Mackey Opticians we want to encourage everyone to think about the last time they had their eyes tested!
A regular eye test can help detect certain eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration, which could lead to sight loss. Not to mention having your vision corrected when need can greatly improved the quality of your day-to-day life!
Why not visit the National Eye Health Week website and complete their Eye Health Questionnaire to find out more about what you may be entitled to and why a regular eye check could benefit you?
