Karen McGivern and Matthew Martin welcomed esteemed guests and pre-service teachers to an education conference called INVITE: Inclusion of Newcomers - Video diaries in Initial Teacher Education. This is part of a SCoTENS (The Standing Conference of Teacher Education North and South) project with Dublin City University. The purpose of this research project is to explore pre-service teachers understanding of sense of belonging and their role as ‘place-makers’ (their role in making school a place where newcomers belong) (Riley, 2019) in schools, while also gathering their perceptions of the opportunities and challenges they may face in creating a sense of belonging for newcomer children. Thank you to all the guest speakers: Full Service Community Network, Ann Pendleton and Sophic Cocault Intercultural Education Service, Education Authority, Dr Kieran Shields and Jane Camara Maria Stewart, Education Authority St Clare’s Primary School, Belfast, Braid Welsh and Hilary Brennan All Saints College, Belfast, Conor Kennedy Extern Barnardo’s Conway Mill Education

High Sheriff of Belfast, Dr John Kyle visit to St Mary’s University College to view the extensive redevelopment of the College campus including our new College Library & Beechmount Dining Hall.

St Mary’s are proud to be deeply associated with Ireland’s largest community arts festival Féile an Phobail, which welcomes thousands to the city of Belfast each year. Our College has been a higher education institution located on the Falls Road since 1900 and our education tradition continues to develop in an innovative way through a partnership with Féile. The tradition now advances a mission to facilitate ongoing dialogue with others, mindful always of our own distinctive culture and position in society. Debate and discussion are an integral part of Féile an Phobail and that is entirely in keeping with the aims of the people who had the vision to establish a community festival back in 1988. St Mary’s University College has been associated with the Féile since 1992 and our respective interests coalesce around the significance that each organization attaches to learning as the foundation for continuous improvement. We both believe in the power of education as a tool of both democracy and pluralism. We understand that debate and discussions help to improve our collective understanding of the culture, economic, political and social context in which we find ourselves – a context that is constantly changing and increasingly international. We are keen to welcome everyone to St Mary's to experience over 70 debates and discussions.
