This is my current persepctive on learning.

The current research shows that English language learners need to know a whooping 98% of the words in academic materials to comprehend such texts (and learn from them).

It raises the question:

How many words do students need to know to read and understand academic texts?

My answer to students:

They need to know about 10,000 word families to understand well what they have read.
