One of my clients asked me the other day what calories were...

It made me think about how often we see calories been thrown around on the internet and how little they're actually explained in detail.

So I thought I'd write a post to explain a bit about what calories are, and why we need to know this if we are trying to adapt our body composition (lose/ gain weight)

๐˜พ๐™–๐™ก๐™ค๐™ง๐™ž๐™š๐™จ ๐™–๐™ง๐™š ๐™€๐™‰๐™€๐™๐™‚๐™” โšก๏ธ

If we consume too much energy - and our body canโ€™t use it - we store it as fat.

If we consume too little energy - our body releases energy from our stores - this can be fat stores or muscle.

By exercising regularly and fuelling yourself appropriately you can prevent muscle from being used as energy and maximise fat stores being used.

Even though a calorie deficit is necessary for weight loss, eating too few calories consistently can cause problems to your metabolism.

Plus, if you focus on reducing calories rather than using more calories for weight loss purposes then you will potentially restrict your own ability to eat enough other important nutrients.

I hope this helps explain what calories are a bit more!

If you're unsure how many calories you should be eating to reach your goals - there are many free resources online (calorie & macro calculators) that can help you figure out whatโ€™s best for you in relation to your calorie needs...

Well, im here to tell you that everyone in the gym is there to do their own workouts and better themselves (this is going off 10+ years experience)

I was once that person too, afraid that I would be judged until I looked around and realised nobody was looking at me (the new girl/guy)

Dylan has only been training with myself just over 2 months now and already up and well above the weight he could ever dream of lifting

By Dylan lifting heavier weights week in, week out he has gained a lot of muscle and his body fat has also decreased while doing so!

Client Dylan deadlifting for his second time under my coaching methods!

When Dylan was deadlifting from the ground it felt uncomfortable and his form was off a little. A few small adjustments and Dylan felt a lot more comfortable and as you can see his technique is not far off perfection!

Sometimes you just need a simple adjustment & a little patience. Dont just give up

Well first of all, when it comes to my job you must be in it for the right reasons and that is to help people (if your not, it wont last long)

So yeah, my main reason for doing what I do is because I ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž to help people become a better version of themselves

I personally get a real kick out of coaching someone and they do something they never thought they could achieve

In our consultation & first session its all about finding out your why?

From finding out your why, we will then figure out what sort of trailored program best suits you

Everyone is different!

E.g. client A could be a complete beginner and needs coached face to face

Client B is confident with his/her knowledge in a gym and just needs some programming and accountibility through online coaching

But no matter how advanced you are, everyone needs to know their ๐—ช๐—›๐—ฌ!

When joining/attending a gym, everyone should be made to feel really welcome. Not only are they coming into the gym to better themselves, they are also spending their hard earned money

I feel passionate about making my clients feel safe, welcomed and supported when they are in the gym

If we all work together we could normalise these NORMAL gym behaviours and the gym will be a much less intimidating place for so many.

Without failure in the gym, it's hard to progressively overload. Stop worrying about failure and start embracing it as it shows you're pushing yourself.

Say hello to that new member that you havent seen on the gym floor before. You could really put someone at ease just by saying a simple hello

This is something that I see a lot of people avoiding as they're afraid to ask for help. Ask a PT in the gym to spot you, it is their job to help! Spotting is for safety and will allow you to progress further with your lifts if you have someone assisting you as you can then go heavier than you would without a spotter

๐Ÿฐ. ๐—›๐—˜๐—Ÿ๐—ฃ๐—œ๐—ก๐—š

Most PTs and gym workers want to help you! Don't be afraid to ask for their support or advice (even if you think its a stupid question, NO such thing!), it's literally what they're there for! If you're unsure about who to ask, my DMs are always open.ย

I see so many people at the gym just running on the treadmill before they strength train... But truth is, this is not enough to really make the most of your workout.

I must say, I was once guilty of this too before I gained the knowledge ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I have a warm up routine that all my clients do to get the body/muscles nice and warm as well as certain movements to prime muscles for that session to prevent the risk of injury

HERE'S MY RECIPE YOU COULD USE FOR PROTEIN PANCAKES - ย

โ–ช๏ธ2 scoops Whey Protein powder

Well done to my online client Cliodhna absolutely smashing her goals!

When Cliodhna joined up to my online coaching program, we kept it pretty basic as she was new to working out and tracking her steps, nutrition, etc.
