One of my clients asked me the other day what calories were...
It made me think about how often we see calories been thrown around on the internet and how little they're actually explained in detail.
So I thought I'd write a post to explain a bit about what calories are, and why we need to know this if we are trying to adapt our body composition (lose/ gain weight)
๐พ๐๐ก๐ค๐ง๐๐๐จ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ โก๏ธ
If we consume too much energy - and our body canโt use it - we store it as fat.
If we consume too little energy - our body releases energy from our stores - this can be fat stores or muscle.
By exercising regularly and fuelling yourself appropriately you can prevent muscle from being used as energy and maximise fat stores being used.
Even though a calorie deficit is necessary for weight loss, eating too few calories consistently can cause problems to your metabolism.
Plus, if you focus on reducing calories rather than using more calories for weight loss purposes then you will potentially restrict your own ability to eat enough other important nutrients.
I hope this helps explain what calories are a bit more!
If you're unsure how many calories you should be eating to reach your goals - there are many free resources online (calorie & macro calculators) that can help you figure out whatโs best for you in relation to your calorie needs...

When Dylan was deadlifting from the ground it felt uncomfortable and his form was off a little. A few small adjustments and Dylan felt a lot more comfortable and as you can see his technique is not far off perfection!

When joining/attending a gym, everyone should be made to feel really welcome. Not only are they coming into the gym to better themselves, they are also spending their hard earned money

Without failure in the gym, it's hard to progressively overload. Stop worrying about failure and start embracing it as it shows you're pushing yourself.

This is something that I see a lot of people avoiding as they're afraid to ask for help. Ask a PT in the gym to spot you, it is their job to help! Spotting is for safety and will allow you to progress further with your lifts if you have someone assisting you as you can then go heavier than you would without a spotter

Most PTs and gym workers want to help you! Don't be afraid to ask for their support or advice (even if you think its a stupid question, NO such thing!), it's literally what they're there for! If you're unsure about who to ask, my DMs are always open.ย

I see so many people at the gym just running on the treadmill before they strength train... But truth is, this is not enough to really make the most of your workout.
