Sir Keir Starmer's speech today pointed to a "painful Budget" at the end of October.

It is now certain that the Budget will contain significant and potentially prickly tax changes, with the Government expected to include changes to Inheritance Tax, Capital Gains Tax and VAT exemptions. We are also anticipating further detail on changes to the non-dom rules and the taxation of private equity carried interest.

The recent sign at Glastonbury shows that the ‘Jaffa cake’ issue still has the potential to confuse – and amuse – the public!

HMRC is always interested in businesses which zero-rated food. Recently, BDO Northern Ireland assisted a local business during a VAT compliance check that questioned their zero rating (sadly no Jaffa Cakes were involved).
