Some very important stove maintenance tips along with some do's and dont's.
STOVE MAINTENANCE
It’s important to keep in mind a few things to ensure your stove stays in tip top condition for years to come. How you look after your stove determines how it performs and how long it’ll last.
WEEKLY Maintenance
Woodburning stoves:
Clean out the stove as required but ensure you leave approximately 2.5cm (1″) deep in the base of the stove. Leaving ash will ensure the wood burns more efficiently.
Multifuel Stoves:
Empty the ashpan daily when used.
Glass can be kept clean using a baby wipe and dried with a dry cloth. Any stubborn marks can be removed by dipping the baby wipe in some ash and gently removing the stain off the glass. Dry with a dry cloth or kitchen roll.
MONTHLY Maintenance
Check door seals are intact and the door is firm to close. It’s important that air doesn’t leak between the door and stove when used. If the door seals become damaged or unattached, they just be glued back in place. Rope adhesive can be purchased or in most hardware or stove retailers.
Check any moving parts (handle, door catch, controls) and if they are stuck give them a quick sq**rt with 3 in 1 oil or WD40.
If any firebricks become cracked, don’t worry. This is completely normal and will not affect the operation or performance of the stove. If however they have disintegrated, it’s a sign of burning damp wood and they should be replaced in due course.
ANNUAL Maintenance
The flue must be swept annually.
Not sweeping the flue will allow soot and deposits to build up in the flue and will reduce the diameter of the flue. This could result in smoke entering the room and potentially will cause a chimney fire which could cause irreparable damage to the flue.
When closing the stove down for the summer, clean the stove out completely and leave the controls fully open to ensure airflow into the chimney. This will prevent any moisture build up in the stove.
Some handy Do's and Don't
Don’t put water on the stove to clean it. Use dry cloths or a well wrung our damp cloth and a dry cloth afterwards. Always tighten any loose screws/fixings. Things can work loose sometimes. Always replace glass if it becomes broken. Always replace door rope seal if it becomes loose or falls off. Never use the stove with the door open. Never use abrasive cloths or products on the stove glass.
Happy to report folks that the new phone is up and running.

Folks unfortunately I have lost my mobile phone ( while on my holidays!) and will not be back up and running until next week so if you need a booking please only msg via here.
Apologies in advance to those customers who had been making bookings over the past few days as I actually didn't get those handwritten in to the book so hopefully we figure out how to get contact made on those.
If you see that your gutters are overgrowing then give us a shout on 07706761513 and I can get them cleared out for you.
If you have a log burner or multi-fuel stove and haven't had the flue swept in over a year then it is very important that you look after it, do all the necessary maintenance checks as it says in your stove manual.
Get it swept and make sure it's all kept in good working order.
Also during the summer period open up the door of stove and let it air/breathe.
There's no better time to have your chimney swept than the summer.
Lots of customers I haven't seen in two years or more now and if you are a new customer and it's been some time now since you last had your chimney swept then give us a shout.
Plenty of availability from week of 3rd June onwards and also available for some gutter cleaning work.
Either msg me here or on my mobile 07706761513.
Thanks,
Paul.

Announcement --
From this spring/summer I will be starting to do some gutter cleaning and roof cleaning work. This will not involve pressure washing but instead a brush/scrape of whole roof areas containing heavy moss buildup.
If you'd like to make a query on these services, just message and I can see what I can do for you.
Thanks,
Paul.

One I get asked a fair bit is...
When is the best time to have your chimney swept?
Basically any time of the year is good and so long as it's being done annually but if it was me personally, using an open fire and/or especially a stove with a flexi flue liner connected - if I was dirtying up my chimney with soot thru October into March would I want to leave that soot lying in there until next winter or get it out now? Well the answer is simple, I'd get it swept now and have a nice clean flue all thru spring and summer ready then to go again for lighting for the next winter.

Thanks,
Paul.

With NESTING season coming up very soon, if you've ever had any birds come down in to your chimney or stove then give me a shout and I can get a birdguard or cowl fitted for you so that you never have to worry about it happening again plus added benefit of knowing a nest will never get built in there either.
Give me a msg here or else on 07706761513.
Thanks,
Paul.

For any FIREFOX stove owners out there who'd like to try and source their own parts but are unsure of their particular model, please view this video...model number is usually just below the glass on the door inside.
So now and again I arrive to see a fire set up just ever so slightly incorrectly and it can make a massive difference to the burning of a fire. Can you spot it?
A chimney sweeping cured this poor performing stove which was smoking particularly bad, the flue had started to clog up with soot.
If you have a family member, friend or neighbour who has a stove or open fire and you suspect they are not of the opinion that it needs swept now and again then please give them a gently nudge and read on..
I had a job yesterday for a young couple who had been using their stove for the past 4 years (winters) and never thought that it would ever need swept ( like a lot of others out there unfortunately!). That was until last Wednesday night close to midnight when their CO (Carbon Monoxide) alarm started to go off. They had soon realised things were serious and then called the Fire Brigade. Minutes later the young couple and their two very young children on a cold snowy night were swiftly evacuated from their home and as the firemen done their bit to ensure the home was safe to re-enter for the following morning, they were also advised to have the chimney swept before lighting their stove again, fortunately they did that.
As expected the chimney was full of soot, but also through mis-use of the stove via no sweeping or maintenance, incorrect fuel and poor burning technique a crack had formed along the top cast iron part of the stove, visible only when I put light inside the stove and was clearly then able to see the crack.
Please, if you know someone who thinks that they might know better, try to get them to wise up a little and have their chimney swept over the next while. Don't leave it until there is a problem, a big problem!!

If you suspect a NEST is being built inside your chimney (visible signs of sticks and twigs falling) let me know right away and I can call out and get it removed along with a cowl fitting.
I only provide this service thru end March and first two weeks April while the nest is not live, after this then all live nests are left until nestlings leave at the end of June at the earliest.
Stove Maintenance - is your stove working at its optimum best?
If your stove has visible signs of wear such as:
- door rope fraying or rope is hanging off in places,
- firebricks are cracked,
- baffle plate warped,
- glass cracked or broken,
- grate is breaking down
then you should think about getting it back up to its most efficient working best again and have some repairs done.
Give us a shout and I can see what I can do.
A great example of how to prep and have your fireplace cleaned out and ready for the sweep.
