His Bakels journey is a long and varied one, working in the warehouse, a couple of stints in planning and purchasing, and even meeting his wife here along the way.

Following the acquisition of Renshaw at the end of 2023, Dennis has been overseeing customer operatons at the British Bakels Liverpool site too, he says ‘since production started up again, service levels have shot up and stayed up, with the team hitting a 100% service level on several occasions. I can’t take much of the credit though, it’s a brilliant and experienced team in Liverpool, some have been with Renshaw longer than I've been with Bakels.”

“I’ve loved working at Bakels, it’s a lovely and supportive bunch of people and it’s great to see that Renshaw has a similar feel to it. The company has grown significantly since I first joined, and the growth tends to be in line with how much we invest in our facilities and how much we invest in our people. Companies like Bakels are rare, and you don’t see many people leave.”

As Baking Centre Manager, Jazzy tackles a diverse range of tasks. Aside from her day-to-day work ensuring the baking centre runs like clockwork, she’s regularly seen at the worktops baking and assisting the Technical Support Managers.

“My role allows me to get involved with all kinds of projects, and it being my first year in industry I couldn’t ask for a better position. I get to spend a lot of time in the bakery helping to prepare for customers visits, often visiting the customers offsite, as well as representing the company at conferences and exhibitions. Not every company offers the opportunities that Bakels does.”

“The bakery team welcomed me from day one, and there’s a lot of expertise among them for me to learn from. I particularly like working with our confectionery ingredients. I’ve recently been experimenting with Renshaw’s Luxury Caramel which is produced at our Liverpool site. I’ve been using it in Millionaire’s Shortbread, Almond Slices (with Renshaw’s Renmac), the creamy texture has been particularly good in cheesecake.”

“I’ve also been back to UCB, this time to talk the students as a representative of Bakels, I didn’t imagine I’d be doing this just a year after graduating myself.”

Their product knowledge was put to the test as they were divided into teams and given a baking challenge.

Each team were given a bag of bread improver, one team had a control bag whilst the other three had the same improver but with a different ingredient missing. Their task was to bake off a bread using their improver and identify the missing ingredient from the resulting bake. 🥖

British Bakels’ success as the Bakels Centre of Competence for breads is driven by a companywide effort. With many departments playing a role in the development and manufacture of an ingredient, there’s a real value in all colleagues understanding what we make and sell.

𝗡𝗲𝗶𝗹 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗕𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘂𝗽𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝘁
𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝟯𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼.

“There were only six of us then, the lines were very manual and the quality of the production was all down to how well the operators could follow the recipe. Since then we’ve expanded and have automated lines, the team has grown to 36 people in wet production across three shifts.”

The second longest serving colleague at the British Bakels Bicester site, he’s worked in both the wet and dry plants. “There’s a bit of friendly rivalry between the two, which has the most output and which generates the most profit. I’ve been lucky to be a part of two of British Bakels bestselling products, Multiseed Bread Concentrate in the powder plant and Millionaire’s Caramel in the wet plant, so it’s currently 1-1 for me on that front.”

“I’ve seen Bakels go from strength to strength during the time I’ve been here. On several occasions we’ve had targets that have seemed lofty and out of reach, only for us to hit them later that year. They’re the kind of milestones where we even surprised ourselves. Now with the Renshaw brand at Liverpool, we’re setting our sights even higher.”

Miss Bakels is the daughter of Bernard Bakels, who founded the Bakels Group and established British Bakels back in 1947. As the last of the Bakels family, it was a privilege to have her visit the Bicester Site and see just how much British Bakels has grown in recent times.

Her visit was a time to reflect and celebrate where British Bakels began and its remarkable growth over the decades. A highlight was her meeting members of British Bakels 25+ club, Bakels colleagues who have been with the company for over 25 years.

After a day of tours and presentations, Miss Bakels encouraged all at Bakels to “always continue to feel part of the Bakels team and do so with pride.”

Stephanie has been at Bakels for almost a year and has been a part of the exciting flavour-work coming out of our NPD labs.

She says, “One of my favourite parts of food NPD is taking aspects of a food or beverage and working that into a new food format.”

“The current ‘Newstalgia’ trend gives us a lot of ideas to play with, mirroring much loved classics in new and exciting ways. Another current trend that lends nicely to this form of NPD is the drinks flavours trend.”

“When creating the concept for a lemonade doughnut, we wanted to recreate that refreshing first sip of a glass of lemonade. We selected a fresh lemon note for the filling and popping candy as a topping to create the mouthfeel of a fizzy drink.”

We were so excited to bring the Renshaw and Bakels ranges together for a Valentines Day shoot ❤️🍰

With reds & pinks at the ready, we were baking our Multimix Red Velvet Cake recipe and topping it with the Renshaw soft and ready-to-roll icings 🎂 . The fondant hearts were literally the icing on the cake. Decorated Fudgy Brownie hearts and Choux pastries followed.
