Last week, the Operator Skills Hub, in collaboration with Flannery Plant Hire was invited to Newcastle Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) for an event – the Midlands region Highways Industry Careers Day. Through interactive displays and activities, we immersed students from Years 9 to 13 in the intricacies of the industry.

Using a plant simulator, we guided these budding talents through the nuances of operating dump trucks and excavators, aiming to ignite their passion and curiosity for the dynamic highways sector.

We believe in sowing the seeds of curiosity early, inspiring the next generation to consider a rewarding career in this field.

Last week, our Training Standards Manager, Huw Jones visited GGR Group in Haddenham to familiarize himself with the groundbreaking FARESIN 17.45 Full Electric Telescopic Handler on behalf of Flannery Plant Hire. Notably, this marks the UK debut of the first fully electric telescopic handler of its kind.

Today we are pleased to acknowledge the successful graduation of Luke Roberts and Luke Francis from our Bootcamp. Both individuals serve as groundworkers and operators for Danny Sullivan Group, working on behalf of Balfour Beatty VINCI.

It is worth mentioning that both Luke Roberts and Luke Francis were introduced to the programme through their employers DSG and BBV taking the opportunity to access the funded Bootcamp programme to develop their workforce. After highlighting what categories would benefit the project both were enrolled on to the Plant Operator Bootcamp, focusing on ADT and Telehandler courses to advance their professional competencies.

We were happy to join the BBV HS2 Safety Stand Down Day last week alongside Flannery Plant Hire and Spillard Safety Systems Ltd.

Our Digital Training Unit was on site, containing one of our plant simulators, which allowed participants of the event to gain practical insights into plant operations in a controlled environment.

Yesterday the Operator Skills Hub, with supporting Flannery Plant Hire and EKFB hosted the “Bring Your Daughter to Work Day" event.

The children had a blast trying out the plant simulator, where they got a taste of what it's like to operate heavy machinery.
Also, the kids were in awe as they dug, scooped, and explored with use excavator.

But more than just fun and games, "Bring Your Daughter to Work Day" was about giving these young minds a glimpse into the world where their parents work every day.

We are proud to support and inspire the next generation of builders, engineers, and leaders. The future of construction looks bright with these enthusiastic and curious young minds!

A huge thank you to all the parents, children, and EKFB team members who made this day a success.

Today we are celebrating another successful Bootcamp cohort at the Operator Skills Hub. Over the past 2 weeks, 11 candidates have worked hard to gain the skills required to successfully complete a range of courses.

Under the watchful eye of our trainer James Ladkin, all four of Novice Dozer trainees ( pictured below) Successfully passed their CPCS theory and practical tests, all while dodging the rain in the great British summer we currently having.

We are pleased to announce that the CPCS A68 Driving plant for non-operational use, course has been successfully completed in our training centre under the able guidance of our experienced trainer Mark Hardware

The course for Balfour Beatty VINCI, helps support the training required to deliver High Speed Two Limited (HS2 Ltd) safely.

During this course, a wide array of topics was covered, including:

Tracked boom equipped Up to 10 and 50 tons;
Tracked (blade/shovel);
Wheeled articulated chassis;
Wheeled rigid chassis;
Non-operational Ride-on Roller.

The Operator Skills Hub, in association with Balfour Beatty and Flannery Plant Hire, had the privilege attending an event hosted by Nuneaton Signs , a remarkable Social Enterprise that champions meaningful employment for people with disabilities, with 71% of its workforce comprising individuals with disabilities.

The event “ Breaking down barriers into Construction” featured an impressive showcase of roles and opportunities, inherent in the Construction sector for people with disabilities. The event held a spotlight to a range of construction roles, from Drone Piloting to Surveying to machine operation, facilitated by the innovative utilization of Spot, the robotic dog, Balfour Beatty surveying drones, Operator Skills Hub mobile Simulator and a Flannery 360 excavator.

This experience highlighted that the perceived barriers to entering Construction can be overcome, and the industries’ commitment to inclusivity.

Molly and Marta are both new to the industry and after 2 weeks of training and testing have successfully completed the Operator Bootcamp, giving them the opportunity to join our industry as CPCS accredited “Agricultural Tractor" and “Articulated Dumper” operators.

This is a great first step into the career of being a machine operator in an industry that continues to have shortages of skilled operatives throughout the UK, and we wish them luck in the future.

They started off a little apprehensive, but their hard work paid off, the Operator Skills Hub couldn't be prouder of their accomplishments!

Passing the practical ADT test sparks a whirlwind of emotions for two of our students.

It is great to see our trainer Thomas Chorlton, delivering EUSR CAT 1 and CAT 2 Service Avoidance training, to delegates from Coventry City Council.
The course equips the delegates with the skills to effectively and correctly use the service avoidance tools to locate underground services.
Training took place at the Operator Skills Hub bespoke training area, using the latest service avoidance tools giving the delegates real world avoidance experience.

We are thrilled to share another success story from one of our students, Pawel Kardaszewski! Pawel recently completed the Flannery Skills Bootcamp in Plant Operations to gain his dump truck qualification and impressed the team so much that he’s already secured a job at Flannery Plant Hire.

On completing the course, Pawel said:

“Thank you to the Operator Skills Hub for the top-notch training. The instructors have been incredible, it’s great to see how they tailor their approach to meet the individual needs of each trainee.”

He also extends his appreciation to Flannery for recognising his potential and giving him the opportunity to work with them. We couldn’t be prouder of Pawel and his achievements and wish him all the best as he embarks on this new chapter of his career!

Today, we had the pleasure of hosting Topcon at our Operator Skills Hub for a 2-day training course for Balfour Beatty VINCI. Operators had the opportunity to work with Topcon machine control systems in this NOCN accredited course. All operators who demonstrated competency with the Topcon system, received a fantastic Topcon backpack, travel mug, notebook, pen, and measuring tape!

We extend our gratitude to Topcon for partnering with us and sharing their expertise with our operators.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting the BBV Procurement Team at our training centre. The team meeting was a great success, filled with engaging activities and valuable training sessions. Last week, we supported Flannery Plant Hire at the High Speed Two Limited (HS2 Ltd) All Staff Conference 2023, held at the ICC Hall in Birmingham.

Flannery Operations Director (Midlands), Garry Boyd and Operations Manager Chris Mayers attended the successful event, which gave us a platform to engage in conversation with new connections and showcase our plant simulators.

Thanks to HS2 for inviting us to take part, we look forward to working with the team again at future events.

We’re excited to announce that Flannery Plant Hire won the Training & Skills Development Programme Award for the Skills Bootcamp in Plant Operations at the Plantworx Construction Exhibition 2023 Innovation Awards last night.
