Over-exercising can become a significant issue when someone is struggling with an eating disorder, as it often becomes intertwined with their disordered eating behaviours and body image concerns.

For children and teens with eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or OSFED, exercise can serve as a means of compensating for food intake, attempting to control weight, or alleviating guilt associated with eating.

One of the primary problems with over-exercising in the context of an eating disorder is that it can exacerbate the physical and psychological health risks already present.

Physically, excessive exercise can lead to fatigue, dehydration, stress fractures, muscle wasting, and hormonal imbalances, among other complications.

Psychologically, it reinforces harmful beliefs about body image and self-worth tied to exercise performance and appearance, contributing to anxiety, depression, and obsessive thoughts.

Over-exercising can also perpetuate a cycle of disordered behaviours, making recovery from the eating disorder even more challenging.

Addressing over-exercising in the context of an eating disorder requires a comprehensive treatment approach that addresses both the physical and psychological aspects of the illness. It’s essential to recognise the signs of over-exercising and tailor interventions to help young people develop a healthier relationship with exercise, focusing on balance, moderation, and overall wellbeing rather than excessive control or avoidance.

We go into more detail about the effects of over-exercising on our blog. Read about it here 👉 https://www.schoen-clinic.co.uk/post/the-effects-of-overexercising

The rise of vegetarian and vegan diets is evident in various aspects of society, from social media trends to supermarket offerings. This shift towards plant-based eating is not only reflected in consumer choices but also in healthcare settings, where specialists are observing more requests for vegetarian or vegan diets, particularly among young people.

Statistics from Schoen Clinic Newbridge reveal a significant proportion of individuals seeking treatment express a desire for meat-free diets, far exceeding the national average.

While the motivations behind choosing a vegetarian or vegan diet can vary, there’s growing concern about the potential link between these dietary preferences and eating disorders. Anorexic and orthorexic behaviours often overlap with the principles of plant-based eating, such as avoiding high-calorie or processed foods.

This raises questions about whether the decision to go vegan or vegetarian is truly based on ethical concerns or if it’s driven by underlying desires for weight loss or control, posing challenges for both families and healthcare professionals.

It’s essential to recognise that adopting a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle doesn’t inherently lead to eating disorders, but it can become a complicating factor for those already struggling. At Schoen Clinic Newbridge, treatment focuses on restoring a balanced relationship with food and addressing the motivations behind dietary choices.

While a vegan diet can be healthy for some, it’s crucial to ensure individuals are physically and mentally well before practising dietary restrictions, especially within the context of eating disorder treatment.

We dive deeper into this in our blog, read it here! 👉 https://www.schoen-clinic.co.uk/post/veganism-and-eating-disorders

Due to the common misconception that eating disorders primarily affect women, boys and men often seek treatment later in the course of the illness.

The National Eating Disorders Association estimates that 10 million men will deal with an eating disorder at some point in their lives, with around one in three individuals experiencing disordered eating being male.

Recent findings suggest that body image concerns amongst men involve muscularity, with muscle-enhancing goals common amongst adolescents and young men.

Isolation often acts as a breeding ground for the growth of eating disorders. In the silence of solitude, distorted thoughts about body image and food can intensify, taking root and gaining strength.

The absence of external perspectives exacerbates the struggle, making it challenging to break free from the clutches of these disorders.

However, amidst the darkness there is a flicker of hope.

Seeking help is the crucial step towards dismantling the walls of isolation. Reaching out to professionals, friends or family can bring the support and understanding needed to navigate the journey toward recovery.

With the help of a supportive community, the power of resilience can be harnessed and the path to healing can begin.

Remember, seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a courageous step towards reclaiming a healthier, happier life.

Eating disorders are about more than just food. They have a tremendous impact on your life and those around you.

Most people typically believe that a person’s concern with food and weight is the main cause of their eating disorder. However, people who have eating disorders often start down that road as a way to manage or deal with distressing feelings and experiences that raise their stress levels.

An individual may feel more in control of their life in the short term by managing their eating habits but these tendencies have the potential to transform into damaging routines that negatively impact many aspects of overall wellbeing.

At Schoen Clinic Newbridge we offer a variety of treatment pathways to help young people recover from eating disorders, from highly specialised inpatient treatment to comprehensive outpatient eating disorder treatment.

Supporting a family member with an eating disorder at Christmas presents multiple and complex challenges. It’s important to prepare for this and to acknowledge how different members of the family feel about Christmas, including their fears, hopes and concerns.

For a young person who is coping with anorexia at Christmas, there is likely to be raised anxiety about the super-abundance of food at this time of year and an increased pressure, compared to other times of year, to eat with other people and to eat food they might otherwise avoid.

Parents are likely to be feeling the pressure to create a happy, or even perfect day (social media can be particularly unhelpful in this respect). Parents may find themselves reflecting on how different Christmas is now the family are coping with an eating disorder, compared to previous years, when children were younger.

We’ve covered some really helpful tips and advice if you’re concerned about an eating disorder in the family as we run up to Christmas.

Eating disorders can develop at any age, but most often affect people from the age of 14 to 25.

Eating disorders commonly start at a time when you are becoming more independent, changing the way you eat and possibly feeling different about your body.

You may have changed your diet in order to lose weight, perhaps turned vegetarian or started trying different foods.

You are likely to have more control over what you eat and have more of your meals and snacks with friends or on your own, rather than with your parents.

Eating disorders can develop when you start to use food in order to deal with difficult feelings and emotions.

If you’re worried about yourself, a friend or a loved one, you can find more information, or get in touch with our team through our website 👉 schoen-clinic.co.uk/birmingham

Anorexia, medically referred to as anorexia nervosa, is a serious eating disorder that can impact individuals across all age groups.

Seen most often among children, teenagers, and young adults, this condition is characterised by an extreme restriction of food intake and an overpowering fear of weight gain.

But it’s not just about weight - Although changes in weight and body perception are key indicators of anorexia, other factors must also be considered.

Mental health assessments are an important part of the diagnostic process, which can help to identify other psychological issues that may contribute to the development of anorexia, such as depression, anxiety, or obsessive compulsive disorder.

Early detection and timely interventions can help prevent anorexia from developing into a severe condition, which can have lasting effects on a young person's physical and emotional well-being.
