Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace
there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly
and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself
with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater
and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well
as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery
But let this not blind you to what
virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity
and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life
keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery,
and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy. ~Max Ehrmann

Amanda has been volunteering with us for 4 years. Here’s her thoughts on supporting others and what you can expect when you call 👇
“It’s a privilege to hear the deeply personal things people share, particularly when they say things like, ‘You’re the first person I’ve told this to.’ By the end of the call, you can often hear they feel more settled… it’s just a real honour.
“It’s OK if you don’t know what to say or feel nervous about calling. We can ask some questions, but it’s up to you what you answer. You don’t have to share anything you’re not comfortable with. The call is yours and is guided by you. We just want to be there.
“It really is a non-judgmental, safe space. There’s nothing you can’t talk to us about - anything that’s on your mind, or that you might find it difficult to talk to other people about. We’ll give you space to work through those feelings.
“If you’re worried about someone and want to support them, know that it’s not always about giving advice. Let people talk at their own pace and reassure them that someone cares. Sometimes, that’s the most important thing you can do.”
Understanding areas of control: what you can and can not control
Accepting what you can't control is a helpful tool for problem solving, stress management, negative thoughts, and mental wellness.

A lot about our behaviour doesn’t make sense until we can take on board a basic idea about the way we humans are built: that our biology privileges survival over self-awareness. Place any new human in a terrible circumstance – let’s say, in a home with an abusive or alcoholic parent – and it won’t focus clearly on what has gone wrong, or mourn its condition. It will simply keep going.
Yet our excellence at survival doesn’t take away from the basic fact of our situation. We have the ingredients of madness inside us.

Honestly, this can feel really hard sometimes. But, so good for kids (and for us) for them to have some agency and control in their worlds.

Surveying bits of our past – perhaps while in the bath, on a walk, or a flight – we may come across a particular type of memory colloquially known as ‘bittersweet’.
We might remember afternoons we used to spend, when we were little, with our grandmother. Together we’d do a bit of weeding in her tiny garden, then we’d make lunch and play cards. Sometimes she showed us her old photographs of her own distant childhood.
We enjoyed those times very much – but the memory of them is mixed up with the knowledge of what happened later. In adolescence, we pushed away from her, we almost never visited – and she died before we’d found our adult selves. She never got to know about the love we now feel for her. We wince at our recollections.
Or perhaps we remember being fifteen and in love for the first time. Crippled by shyness, we never said anything. Recently we heard they had a child and moved north. We wonder, with pain, if we could ever feel that way again. It seems typical that we let the best person slip through our fingers.
Bittersweet memories force us to acknowledge that the positive in our lives is never far from being devilishly entwined with something more difficult. We feel the pain of being flawed, error-prone, time-short, and regretful humans. To be open to bittersweet memories is to accept ambivalence: having two contrasting emotions about the same thing without disowning either. We’re recognising, rather than denying, the fiendishly mixed character of experience.
