Don’t be caught out by new regulations - Gate Fall Safety Cable is safety cable and required in line with regulations as stated in the DHF code of practise TS 011:2019 and EN12604, which states:

'Swing and folding gate systems produced since 2018 should be protected against hinge failure, such that if a hinge fails the gate will not drop nor move more than 300mm off it vertical axis'.

This safety device is fixed to the gate post around the gate hinge areas (as can be seen in the attached photo)to prevent the gate falling in case of hinge failure. The fall prevention cables are rated at 1600Kg; the crimps have a 900Kg minimum load to unthread. Available in 515 and 800 mm lengths.

They are supplied with threaded bar, washers and lock nuts so the cable can be easily fixed to the post. We recommend fitting the safety cables around both gate hinges, top and bottom.

Here’s five winter maintenance checks that we recommend you undertake with your customers.

1. Perform a thorough inspection of the gate system to insure its ready for the winter weather. Check for any signs of wear, lubricate moving parts and tighten loose connections.

2. Evaluate the gates resistance to winter elements. Ensure that all seals and weather- stripping are intact to prevent moisture and cold air from affecting the electronics.

3. Check the gates systems backup batteries and replace any that shows signs of deterioration.

4. Review and update any program settings, such as opening and closing times, to align with the customers holiday plans.

5. Provide information to your customer on how cold the temperatures may affect performance and give practical tips for maintaining the gate during winter.

This is a safety device designed to greatly improve the safety of Hydraulic swing gate systems. The POSITION GATE is built into the case of the actuator and is protected from harm or weathering.

Keeping your Customer(s) Safe:

A recent audit of gates undertaken by Gate Safe on swing gates to assess a critical safety issue directly attributed to poor design.

In brief, 75% featured only had two hinges, which is in direct conflict with the guidance provided by the updated British Standard BS EN 12604 which clearly states that all swing gates should be fitted with three hinges.

Sadly, the audit revealed that only nine (just over 10%) of the gates reviewed were equipped with the recommended three hinges.

SEA encourages all installers to take heed of the three hinges recommendation, as this could help prevent your customers being injured and a potential liability claim against you.

Whilst automated gates provide security and control over who can access the property, they are classed as machinery and are therefor required to be legally compliant and safe for anyone to use.

There are a variety of methods, which can be employed to gain access to premises using automated gates. Therefore, the degree of security needed by the gate will be largely dictated by the method of entry and therefore this is likely to have an impact on the safety requirements of the gate.

It is therefore recommended that a risk assessment is always undertaken, before gate installation, to identify all the potential risks associated with automating a gate.

We recommend the use of photocells and edges on ALL gates that are automated, as this will help considerably to protect the gate users from the risk of injury or being trapped.

It is also a criteria that the installer should have a clear understanding of how to select the correct pressure edges, this is to ensure that they effectively stop, then automatically reverse the gate when an object or person is detected.

Here's an example why safety needs to be applied to all installations:
.. Leicester firm was prosecuted after a child's head was stuck in gate.
..worker was seriously hurt in factory gate incident.

A few days ago we considered gate motors for sliding gates. Today we look at motors for swinging gates.

We have a large range of Hydraulic & Electromechanical (Piston and Crank Arm) swing gate operators that are highly suitable for a variety of gates, for example: residential gates as well as light or heavy commercial gates.

Safety of operation is always a high priority for SEA, which is why all of our 230 V mains systems have an adjustable form of force control - either current sensing or pressure regulation.

Using the slow down function at the end of the gate travel, ensures that the swinging gate systems are quiet in operation and provides additional protect against trapping.

For extra peace of mind, a Position Gate can be connected to both the mini and half tank motors. This encoder measures the position of the gate (great in windy situations) and reverses the motor's direction if an obstruction is encountered. It has a similar effect as fitting safety edges to both sides of the gate.

Photocells, metal detectors and safety edges can also be installed and linked into the SEA control panel to provide the best safety systems possible.
