In conjunction with Scaling Questions, and some other SFT questions, Follow-Up Scaling Questions are a key technique in this type of therapy.
These questions are used to help clients assess their progress, identify what has improved, and plan further steps.
Scaling questions help you assess where your client is currently standing, and identify steps for improvement.
Typically, they involve rating the situation or issue on a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is the worst and 10 is the best.
This creates a good starting point for further questions. Like how they could progress, or what it would feel like to move up on the scale.
Chris Iveson's art gallery metaphor is a powerful tool in Solution Focused Brief Therapy, promoting a focus on strengths and client empowerment through curation of an imagined space.
Ticket Office:
At the start of SF therapy, it’s important to establish the client’s concerns, and what they’d like to change. These can be about why they’re visiting the ‘art gallery’. From here we’ll figure out what the Best Hopes are.
Preferred Future Gallery:
Once we have an idea of what the client would like, we can build descriptions of the changes that will need to be made. These descriptions are considered the ‘artworks’ of the gallery, and serve to be reflected upon. The more we have, the better.
Resources Gallery:
The second gallery is a space to describe resources the client has. What can we confirm they can do, what do they have access to, what/who can help them realise the descriptions in the Preferred Future Gallery. These will also serve as ideas to be reflected upon.
We can also move between the two gallery spaces, cross-referencing each to get a better idea of what’s needed for both.
Gift Shop:
Here is where we summarise the experience. What did they learn about themselves? Did they understand the exercise? Is there anything else to add?
They can always revisit the gallery too, with all the artwork available for viewing.

This is a classic Solution Focused Therapy question. It forces the client to view their future in a different light, without the problem preventing progress.
It’s like a blockage in a river has been removed, allowing for thoughts and ideas to flow more freely.
After this, the client is able to offer more ideas and suggestions to make good progress, seeing this potential future ahead of them.
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is considered an evidence-based therapy. Numerous studies have demonstrated its effectiveness across a variety of settings and populations. SFBT is characterized by its goal-oriented approach, focusing on solutions rather than problems, and emphasizing clients' strengths and resources.

People will have uncertainties about their abilities compared to the obstacles in their path.
Positive Reinforcement Questions break down these obstacles into digestible step by step plans, using past experiences and achievements as proof of being up to for the task.
Similar to Strength Based Questions, but instead focusing on the size of the obstacle and how to overcome it, instead of personal ability.

Anyone interested in therapy will want to know where the cracks are. What should you focus on in your Solution Focused approach, and what to pitfalls to avoid.
If a client is uncertain if they can plan a long journey on their own, a Strength Based Question would be to ask about the longest journey they’ve taken independently.
What is the difference between then and now, and what do they have access to now that would help them, and what are their options.

Your support will help Change continue its work, enabling them to assist more people in overcoming obstacles and improving their quality of life. Any contribution, big or small, makes a difference.
