A special thank you to our presenter Annabel Croft for hosting the appeal, and to Dignity Funerals for their generous matched funding of £15,000.

We’re also deeply thankful to Molly, Mark, and Sarah for bravely sharing their stories, highlighting the impact of our hospice, palliative care, and bereavement services.

One of our talented volunteers, Nav, who works at our Scott Arms shop created this striking, colourful display to celebrate month 🌈

“I got into volunteering because I wanted to do something a bit different to what my peers were doing, something that wasn’t really the norm for my age group."

To celebrate the start of we're sharing Derya's story 💙

Derya Oflaz volunteers at our Sidmouth shop and said, "I happened to see a leaflet when out shopping that was encouraging local people to get involved in volunteering in the town’s Sue Ryder shop, which happens to be right next door to our family business.

"There was no need for an interview, I just needed to have some time to spare and a willingness to get involved in lots of duties to help with the running of the shop.

“That was in January 2023, and I’ve never looked back. I really enjoy my time in the shop, from pricing items to serving on the till and sorting the stock room, it’s really enjoyable and I love that I am able to give back to the community in some way.

"I can take the time to show customers what we have and talk to them about what they are looking for etc. The local people are really friendly and, in this role, I feel quite connected to the community.

“Volunteering at Sue Ryder’s Sidmouth shop has offered me so many more benefits than I ever knew existed. Once I complete my Law degree and graduate, I want to start my solicitor training. Being around the public and interacting with customers has really helped me expand my social skills and boost my confidence, all of which will be so beneficial to my future career. Also, given that Sue Ryder offers bereavement services and palliative care, it has made me very aware of what others are going through and empathetic to other's needs.

“I would definitely advise any young people out there looking for a new challenge, needing to boost their CV or wanting to meet new people and feel part of the community, to think about volunteering. It has been such a positive experience for me and will really help me progress in the future.”

Shop Manager Anthony, who works at our Scott Arms shop shares three top tips to help you secure a treasure at one of our charity shops.
1. Be sure to look around the shop at least twice, you may have missed something the first time!
2. Always look inside the display cabinets and cupboards, you never know what you may find.
3. Never hesitate to buy something you like. You may return to the shop later to find the item has already been sold.

Our Prestwick shop is celebrating an incredible find, as a novice volunteer, on her first day in the shop, found hidden treasure in a wooden box while sorting donations!

Ann Jefferson literally struck gold when she spotted a unique and interesting wooden box, shaped like a treasure trove, which was donated by an unknown gentleman.

Upon opening the box, Ann discovered a handful of gold jewellery and watches tucked away beneath bags of bright costume jewellery, so it could easily have been mistaken for items that had lost their shine and value 🤯

Unaware of the significance of the find, Ann consulted another of the shop’s volunteers, who brought it to an auction house in Ayr, where it fetched a staggering £828 at auction!

The standout items from the auction were a 4.5cm yellow metal cameo brooch that raised £240 for us, and a yellow metal seed pearl and gem set pendant that raised a further £260.

Sonya said, "I attended the auction with three other volunteers, and we got very excited when our lots kept meeting and exceeding their top-end estimations. We were dancing and celebrating having raised so much money for the charity."

The auction house, Thomson Roddick Callan, known locally as Callan's, kindly charged 0% commission for each lot, allowing Sue Ryder to be there for more people when it matters.

Shop manager, Aaron Mullins, said, "It's a fantastic donation! I have managed the shop for over four years now and it's one of the best finds we have ever had. The incredible people of Ayrshire generously support our wee shop and their donations ensure that people approaching the end of their life, or living with grief, can access the support they need.

"It's a very rewarding job and in this instance, one man's trash really was another man's treasure."

What a wonderful story - well done to the team at Prestwick! 💙

A wonderful supporter of ours recently organised a fashion show to raise money for Sue Ryder. She worked with her colleague, Julie Windle and in co-operation with Cheyenne Smith, Interim Regional Head of Hospice Fundraising and Dan Ambler, Manager at the Eye Sue Ryder shop to make the show a success.

The clothes in the fashion show were donated by her friends and Corinne was overwhelmed by their generosity.

She said, "I was also looking for a wedding dress to include in the final catwalk theme – The Wedding Day 💍

"Hunting round the Eye shop, I found a brown box with lace sticking out. It was a wedding dress! I was allowed to take it home for further inspection.

"It was a delightful find, but in a sad state. It had been worn on the big day and probably hadn’t been taken out of the box since. The box also had in it the original McCalls paper pattern and the dressmaker had added the date it was made – 1979. There was also a short veil and some spare material."

The dress had stains, and the zip was stuck and rusted, but Corinne and her mum removed the stains and put a new zip in too.

"The dress came alive with our model Lauren, looking beautiful and walking down the catwalk to Mendelsohn’s Wedding March. Our other gorgeous models were wearing their wedding outfits and throwing confetti!

"Of course, the dress has another story, which we do not know, but I hope that if the original owner could see it now, it would bring a smile to her face."

Corinne and Julie raised an incredible £2,300, which has been donated together with a large stock of lovely clothes which were not sold on the night! 💙

"I have done many varied and wonderful things, and working in the Aylesbury shop is up there with the best of them."

A huge congratulations to one of our wonderful volunteers at our Aylesbury shop, Janet Smith, who is 82 years old and is celebrating 30 years of volunteering for Sue Ryder 👏

She visited two of our hospices and described the visits as 'amazing, emotional and humbling'.

She said, "I was amazed at the amount of love, caring, sharing, and laughter experienced there. Knowing and seeing for myself what wonderful places the hospices are made me realise we needed to make all the donations count. I was still having fun but on a serious mission.

"I have loved my 30 years. I feel so blessed that I have had this opportunity."

Thank you for your incredible work, Janet! 💙

Our Islington shop welcomed the Mayor of Islington, Councillor Gary Heather, to the shop recently. He rolled up his sleeves and joined an interactive training session designed to give budding volunteers a taste of what is involved when you donate some time to our shops.

The Mayor met members of our Islington’s shop dedicated volunteering team, who were on hand to demonstrate what's involved, explain the benefits of volunteering and discuss why they were inspired to help us make a real difference to people relying on end-of-life care and bereavement services.

He got stuck into helping with everything from sorting and preparing stock to merchandising and sales, as he gained a clear understanding of volunteering in a busy charity shop.

The Mayor said, “It has been a real privilege to meet some of the shop’s inspiring volunteers and learn more about how Sue Ryder shops raise funds for its important work. It is very reassuring to know that our community has so many people willing to give up their time to make a very positive impact locally and support the charity.

"It takes a special kind of person to dedicate their time to a charity shop regularly, so I would like to sincerely thank Sue Ryder Islington’s shop volunteers for the effort they put in and the difference they make. They really are a credit to the charity, who I know is immensely proud of them and thankful for their commitment.”

Thank you to all our incredible volunteers for all that you do! 💙

Our Watford shop on Langley Road, will be celebrating its 50th anniversary! 🎉

They are offering customers the chance to nab a Watford FC top, signed by The Hornet’s legend, Luther Blissett, as well as giving shoppers 20% off most items in-store from 18-20th March.

To mark the special occasion, from the 18th-22nd March, customers can come in store and bid for a Watford FC training top, signed by 1970’s England and Watford FC player, Luther Blissett.

The highest bidder will become the proud owner of the Blissett autographed memorabilia, with all proceeds raised going towards our hospices, palliative care hubs and range of bereavement services.

Tina Sorrell, Langley Road Shop Manager said, “We have enjoyed a fantastic 50 years of business here in Watford and decided the best way to celebrate was to hold a fun and vibrant birthday event to thank customers and launch our three-day discount. Luther Blissett signing a Watford FC top to be auctioned off was the icing on the cake and an amazing addition to our anniversary celebrations.”

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all staff past and present who have contributed to the success of the shop and to our dedicated volunteers, who we simply couldn’t operate without. We look forward to welcoming even more customers to the shop going forward and hope that our success continues.”

If you're in the area, pop down and celebrate with the team!

"Working so closely with Mum has brought us much closer together. I’m so lucky that I get to spend that much time with her, and I am truly grateful for her." 💙

With Mother's Day around the corner, we want you to meet the dynamic mum and daughter duo, Sarah and Hayley, who work together at our shop in Devizes.

Daughter, Hayley is Shop Manager, while mum, Sarah volunteers at the store three days a week.

Hayley said, "Mum and I come as a bit of a package deal. After about a month in my managerial role I was transferred to the Swindon shop for six months to cover and mum came with me to volunteer there, transferring back to Devizes when I moved back. We travel in together every day that she’s in, spend the day together and travel home together in the evening.

"We cross paths very frequently each day. We both get involved in sorting out stock and being on the floor interacting with customers. It’s great having the opportunity to spend so much time together and I am so grateful for her hard work."

Sarah adds, "It’s probably quite unusual for a mum and daughter to work so closely. I am very proud of Hayley and all that she has achieved. We don’t always see eye to eye, which is completely natural but it’s great to be working alongside her."

This spring, we're asking people to donate their unwanted clothes, accessories, bric-a-brac and more to one of our 400 Sue Ryder charity shops!

Val has worked with Sue Ryder for 15 years, starting out as a volunteer and working her way up to become the manager in our Shinfield shop.

When asked why people should donate their pre-loved items, Val shared, "Now is a great time to get a fresh start with your wardrobe and clear out what you don't want or need. Not only is donating to Sue Ryder a great way to save unwanted items from going to landfill, but you're also helping people who are coping with grief and those who need our palliative care."

Every donation to our shops, no matter how big or small, can help support Sue Ryder. Val adds: "Your donations make a huge difference to our shops - we couldn't run without the kind donations that we receive and we're so grateful for what you can give!"

Val's tip for anyone who's looking to give their pre-loved items to our shops is to check ahead: "We love to receive your donations, but do check we can take your items by calling your nearest shop to make sure we have space and ask any questions about what we can or can't accept first."

Mush and Ash Pawson have been married for almost 50 years and volunteer together at our shop in Cavendish.

Ash said, "We wanted to give something back to the local community in some way, so volunteering for Sue Ryder was a good option for us. I really enjoy the social element, greeting customers and working on the till. It’s nice to be able to meet different people and interact with the public, I get a lot out of it."

Mush adds, “I also think it’s so important to keep the mind and body alert and active and volunteering in a charity shop helps you do just that.

"We both get to enjoy some time out of the house and contribute to the local community, which is really important to us."

They believe having a similar sense of humour and interests is key to their long-lasting marriage 💙

Mush and Ash show that volunteering at Sue Ryder can have many benefits. To find out more information about our opportunities, visit sueryder.org/volunteer
