🌎 World Humanitarian Day 🌎

In recognition of , we reflect on the importance of global collaboration in improving access to eye care.
Recently, we partnered with organisations in both Ghana and Zambia to support vital eye health initiatives.

In Ghana, we worked alongside Cardiff University to help them deliver eye care and education to local communities. Their team of optometrists and students provided training, conducted eye health screenings, and supported efforts to combat glaucoma—a condition that affects many in the region.

Similarly, in Zambia, we loaned an iCare IC100 and Adaptica Kaleidos to another charity organisation called Eyecare for Zambia (https://eyecareforzambia.org/embarking) on a two-month outreach mission. These devices enabled the team to conduct essential eye exams and deliver care to rural communities with limited access to healthcare.

These projects reflect the heart of humanitarian work—coming together to uplift others. We're grateful to have played a small part in helping improve lives through eye care, and we remain committed to supporting initiatives that bring care to those who need it most.

Garry is pictured here holding the Huvitz Lensmeter, which is set to embark on an important and noble mission for SeeKenya.

Garry and his team at Mainline Instruments gave this lensmeter a comprehensive check-up, ensuring it’s in peak condition for the demanding environment at Isiome Hope Centre in Meru, Kenya.

With the October visit approaching, it's vital that the equipment is fully operational to support SeeKenya’s incredible work.

In Kenya, too many people's lives are unnecessarily limited by blindness or impaired vision, simply because the eye care they need isn't available. SeeKenya provides trustworthy, high-quality, and life-changing eye care to prevent blindness, restore sight, and improve eye health. They currently run two clinics a year in Meru, Kenya, and plan to establish a permanent clinic to help as many people as possible.

As we observe Children's Eye Test Month, a global survey of 3,195 eye care practitioners has unveiled fascinating insights into myopia management worldwide. Led by researchers from Aston University School of Optometry in partnership with the International Myopia Institute, this study highlights key trends and challenges in myopia control:

👁 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬:
• Asia favours orthokeratology
• Europe leans towards multifocal contact lenses
• North America prefers atropine and multifocal spectacles

👁 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬:
• Single vision spectacles are still the most frequently prescribed correction globally
• ECPs prescribe single vision spectacles over 4 times more often than single vision contact lenses for young myopes
• Single vision spectacles are prescribed 2.5 times more often than myopia management spectacles

👁 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐠:
• Soft myopia management contact lenses are prescribed more often than soft single vision contact lenses for young myopes
• The minimum age for prescribing contact lenses to children is nearly 3 years older than for spectacle lenses

👁 𝐀𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:
• Average minimum age for spectacles: 6.4 years
• For contact lenses: ranges from 8.6 to 9.8 years
• Patient age is considered more important than parent/patient preference when choosing between spectacles or contact lenses

👁 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬:
• Cost to patients is the primary hurdle
• Treatment availability is the second most common barrier

This research captures the need for tailored approaches in myopia management and highlights the importance of addressing economic and accessibility factors to improve global eye care.
