At just five days old, Arlo died from a hypoxic brain injury due to failings in his mother's antenatal care, labour, and delivery. Medical Negligence Associate Clark and Mass Ndow-Njie represented Arlo's mother at a four-day inquest that concluded on 3 May 2024.

The Coroner ruled that Arlo's death was due to neglect and will issue a Prevention of Future Deaths Report, also reporting one clinician to the GMC. The Coroner found multiple missed opportunities to deliver Arlo earlier, concluding he likely would have survived if born sooner.

This tragic case highlights the urgent need for reform in maternity services to ensure the safety of mothers and babies. The Trust must take immediate action to prevent such neglect from recurring.

In 2015, the UK set an ambition to halve rates of stillbirths, neonatal deaths, and maternal deaths in England by 2030.

In May 2021 our Medical Negligence team conducted seeking to establish as far as possible, whether practices and procedures about Maternal Request Caesarean (MRCS) have changed in nhs.uk Trusts since 2018.

Our research in 2021 showed that only 6% of UK hospital trusts were offering MRCS.

Now three years on, our Medical Negligence team has conducted more research to follow up on UK hospital trust figures to track progress on the ambitious target set by the government in 2015.
