East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust
William Fielding, Dementia Lead Nurse, emphasises the importance of meaningful activity in the hospital setting: “Meaningful activity is fundamental to the health and wellbeing of all patients, especially those in vulnerable groups such as individuals living with dementia. It can enhance physical fitness, uplift mood, aid in managing mental health challenges, improve sleep quality and reduce the risk of falls.”
He further explains, “Individuals living with dementia experience a range of symptoms that can impact their ability to engage in activities. However, by providing a diverse range of resources, we can significantly increase meaningful activities within our clinical areas for this patient group.”
We are supporting William with the meaningful activity pilot in clinical areas with the aim of measuring patient experience, staff usability and engagement levels. The boxes put together currently contain aqua paints, 1950s reminiscence scrapbooks, activity balls, domino sets, colouring books and pencils. Feedback will enable us to then adapt these resources where necessary for optimum results in enhancing patient experience.
Dr Amy Green, from ward C5, underscores the significance of this resource for fostering positive interactions between staff and patients: “This resource will greatly encourage staff to engage positively with our patients. Building relationships through shared activities or experiences is much more effective in getting to know someone.”

Celebrate Social Prescribing Day
Tomorrow is Social Prescribing Day, a chance for people to come together and highlight community activity and groups that support health and wellbeing and we will have a special promotion stand at Burnley Hospital.
Many things that can have an impact on our health and wellbeing, such as loneliness, isolation and financial stress are not necessary something needed to be treated by medical professionals alone but through the help of community groups and services who are there to provide advice and support. Community activity such as befriending, gardening projects, choirs and exercise groups can all make a positive difference to general health and wellbeing.
ELHT and Age UK Lancashire have teamed up for the annual awareness day that puts the spotlight on organisations and communities who support people with non-medical, health-related social needs. Representatives from both will be on hand at Burnley General Teaching Hospital’s Main Reception all day on Thursday, 14 March to advise and inform patients and visitors about social prescribing and the services available to them – so please come and pay us a visit to find out more.
