A Level Film Studies student Louie Warren has been shortlisted for a prestigious award after creating a moving short film about loneliness.

Louie will be heading to the British Film Institute (BFI) in London for the Media Magazine Production Awards ceremony in July after his short film 'Where I Belong' was shortlisted for the best drama short, competing against more than 130 other student entries.

Louie said: “After I shot the film, my perspective changed on what I wanted to do with my career. It would be a dream to work in the film industry. I’ve had great support at Callywith and my film teachers have been amazing.”

Louie is taking a year out after finishing his A level studies and has secured an internship with a media studio in Plymouth.

Over the weekend of 7-10 June, 36 Callywith students headed up to Dartmoor to undertake their Gold DofE expedition.

The students had planned their routes and menus, being independent and self-contained for the four days. They experienced a range of weather conditions including some heavy showers but carried on regardless.

During the expedition, students undertook a range of activities and projects ranging from a litter survey to recreating a murder mystery in the footsteps of Sherlock Holmes.

All 36 students completed the event with just a few blisters and some memories to remember!

Three of our Digital Academy students recently entered the PA Raspberry Pi competition.

The competition is a celebration of STEM education, giving school and college students the tools and opportunity to invent products that can benefit society.

Using engineering and coding skills and a Raspberry Pi microcomputer, students are challenged to put their ingenuity to the test to come up with inspiring solutions to global challenges.

Students Toby Sanders, Kaden Furzey and Riley Coombe were challenged to invent a product that will help individuals to improve their health and wellbeing, and be able to do this wherever is best for them: at home, college, office or on the move.

The students invented a smart watch. Their brilliant video presentation below explains how this works:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25UPqfRJmgE

Although the students were not finalists, the judges were very impressed with the team’s submission and provided some fantastic feedback saying: “Your video is great and demonstrates your excellent teamwork and individual roles undertaken; it also describes the project really well, including your motivation, and a working product demo, which is fantastic to see. Overall, a good idea and this project clearly showed your team’s excellent technical skills. Well done!”

Callywith College’s Culture Café students and staff have organised a clothes collection with Bag2School to raise funds for the Boom Shewula Wula (BSW)👖👗🧣👚

BSW is a college-run fundraising group enabling orphans and other vulnerable children in Shewula, Eswatini, to access education. Some of our geography students will be visiting the area next month.

Bag2School pay according to the weight of the bags collected, and the group will then pass this money on to the charity, so the heavier the better!

The following good-quality items for RE-USE can be donated:

· Clothes
· Paired shoes (tied together or elastic band around)
· Handbags
· Hats
· Bags
· Scarves and ties
· Bras
· Jewellery
· Socks
· Belts
· Soft toys
· Household linen, curtains, towels and bedding

Members of the Culture Cafe group shared: “As well as raising vitally needed funds for children in Shewula, reusing clothes also helps the environment by diverting unwanted textiles away from landfill. The clothing will make journeys all over the world starting their new life! Whether it’s a second-hand store in South America, or a market stall in West Africa, this provides valuable employment, as well as affordable clothes for local people.

“Please take a look in your cupboards and don’t forget to ask friends and family to have a sort out as well!

“Bag2School will be collecting from Callywith College on 18th June 2024. Please bring your bag (or bags!) to Temple Reception by 9am.

“Thank you for helping us with this unique fundraising opportunity!”

This week, we hosted the last of our successful networking lunches of the year 💬🧑🏽‍💻🎮

Students explored the fields of IT, Software Development and Games Design accompanied by participants from Ver Facil Ltd, Buzz Interactive, GCHQ Bude Outreach, Seasalt Cornwall and Wildanet.

Open to all students, the event was the last of this year’s new series of sector-focused networking lunches hosted by the college which are designed to give students insights into various career paths and valuable networking experiences.

Among the attendees were specialists in a variety of roles including an IT Manager, Head of Service Delivery, Managing Director, and Junior IT Support Technician Apprentice.

It was also brilliant to welcome back former Photography Diploma student Aaron Upton who is now working as an IT Apprentice for Wildanet.

Following rotations in small groups, students engaged in one-on-one conversations with specialists in their area of interest to ask follow-up questions.

One of the participants, Rob Cartwright, Managing Director at Ver Facil, shared: “It was great to meet the next generation of IT and Software professionals in the early stages of their careers and were blown away with both their enthusiasm and their knowledge. Plenty of questions to keep us on our toes. The students got to learn all about Internet of Things, remote monitoring solutions and we learnt a lot about the skills coming out of the college.”

Junior IT Support Technician at Seasalt, Matt Bailey, who was also in attendance, shared: “The event had a really positive environment where students could have friendly conversations with people from various IT related backgrounds. It was great to be able to impart some knowledge which will hopefully help the students in their career journey after college. As an apprentice, it was good to inform the students of what apprenticeships entail and the various benefits of them.”

A big thank you to everyone that participated and contributed to making this year’s networking events a huge success.

We are looking forward to holding our next series of networking lunches at Callywith next year!

If you or your organisation would like to be involved in future networking and careers events at Callywith College, please email [email protected]

To express our gratitude to our wonderful Student Ambassadors for their support this year, we organised a special appreciation event.

Each student received a certificate and a gift from Callywith Principal Jon Grey.

Our Student Ambassadors have all done an amazing job throughout the year, providing essential support at our open events and school visits, Freshers' Fair, fundraising activities, and much more.

They have shared their experiences at Callywith with prospective students and their families and have played a crucial role in helping students settle into college life at the beginning of the term.

A heartfelt thank you to each of you!

Children’s Play, Learning & Development students recently welcomed members from Cornwall Council Portage and Disabled Children's Team.

The students learned about what portage is and working with 0-3s with additional needs, as well as targeted planning and team around the child meetings.

Students were given demonstrations around how to expertly gain the attention of children and work with them on specific targeted areas, using for example Attention Autism techniques and were shown how targeted planning helps children develop.

We would love to thank Kelly, Leah and Gemma for sharing their expertise with us...and their silly soap!

Some of our amazing staff recently completed the Bodmin Lions Ten Tors Challenge!

Support staff Kelsey, Lucy, Tamsyn and Mel (aka ‘Talkie Walkies’) and English & Languages Deputy Team Lead (DTL) Laura hiked up and down Bodmin Moor for 13 miles to raise money for their chosen causes.

Academic Librarian Tamsyn Symon's shared: "Thank you to everyone who supported us on Sunday and donated money which will be donated to Callywith for a new well-being and reflection outdoor area. It has made the blisters, aching muscles and loss of a toe nail all worth it. No denying it was a strenuous, VERY HOT and long walk - we walked a massive 14.9 miles!

“We are blown away to have not just reached our target of £500, but smashed that out of the ball park and have raised a whopping £760, so far. We are excited to now be making plans for the reflection area and seeing the benefits it will bring to students and staff here at Callywith."

DTL Laura said: “We (the tor-toises) took on the Bodmin Lions Ten Tors in aid of the Children's Hospice South West. There were 36 of us, all mums of children at Cubert School, near Newquay. It was a great day, beautiful weather and lovely to catch up with everyone as we walked. Luckily, the breeze kept us cool up on the moor and we all made it around in just over 6 hours, and without too many aches or blisters.

"We have raised an incredible £1848 so far! Thank you to anyone who has supported us.”

Well done to you all!

Another beautiful day on campus 🩵

We’re so lucky to have such amazing outside spaces to unwind and relax 🌿✨

First year Level 3 Health & Social Care students were very lucky to be visited by Neil Bloxham - Paediatric Clinical Educator at Derriford Hospital and two of his current students studying at the University of Plymouth.

Neil discussed the role of a paediatric nurse, a day in the life, case study scenarios and the journey to becoming a children's nurse.

Students also had time to interact with the incredible specialist equipment he bought along ranging from children's manikins, stethoscopes, toy lego, nappies and much more!

We can't thank Neil and his students enough for the time and consideration for this amazing morning for our students.

To anyone interested in becoming a paediatric nurse, the three key elements to the role are desire, passion and understanding of the profession and remember "everyday is different!"

Earlier this year, the Callywith Equestrian team headed to Bicton Arena for the 90cm NSEA Arena Eventing Qualifier for the National Championship. 🏇

Despite having only 3 members, the team of Rosie Busby, Emilia Poet and Kaycee Gowing all completed amazing rounds to finish on a team score of 12 leaving them with a very well deserved 3rd place - just one place off qualifying 👏

There were some great individual results with Emilia 13th, kaycee 18th and Rosie 31st out of 51. Kaycee also finished in a respectable midway position in the 80cm.

Some fantastic riding from everyone!

This team are also super excited to be headed to the National NSEA Championships at Hickstead at the end of May in the 80cm Arena Eventing.

Well done to you all!

Shoutout to our incredible second-year Uniformed Protective Services students!

These future heroes went above and beyond by participating in a 5km mud run, raising over £500 for cancer research. 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️💪

Their dedication, grit, and community spirit are exactly what we need in our future uniformed protective services.

Active citizens making a real difference!

Our lovely support staff are getting very close to their £500 target to donate to Callywith for a well-being and reflection outdoor area! ✨🌿

Kelsey, Lucy, Tamsyn and Mel (aka ‘Talkie Walkies’), who will be taking on the Bodmin Lions Ten Tors Challenge this Sunday 19th May, said: “What started out as a mad idea, that none of us thought would actually become reality, suddenly got real and we signed up!

“We are proud to be part of an outstanding college which has a very supportive culture and recognises that coming to college isn’t just about getting qualifications; it is also about enabling the students to become well-rounded and resilient young people so that they can go on to be successful adults.

“Our mission in tackling the Bodmin Lions Ten Tors challenge is to raise funds to donate to the College, for an outdoor well-being and reflection space that fits into the College ethos. We would like to focus on developing the area as a therapeutic space, so students and staff can benefit from connecting with nature. We would like to start by placing a bench for reflection in the well-being space.

“If you haven’t already please think about donating and if you have we would like to say a massive, massive thank you! And if you can’t for whatever reason please share this post instead it’s just as important as donating. Thank you!”

Best of luck to you all!
