Today you are you,
That is truer than true, there is no-one alive who is you-er than you-Dr Seuss
When I was young I often thought there was something wrong with me. There were lots of situations I felt very uncomfortable in, things I found very difficult. Sometimes I couldn't speak, often I couldn't join in. I was a bit different, had different priorities and thought about things differently. It took a long time to accept these things, and find people I was comfortable spending time with. It was hard.
As I got older I studied hard and got into work as a social worker. At times, I still struggled and needed a lot of support from those around me at work and at home to carry on and do well. I still do sometimes.
Eventually I found myself working in and managing a team who work with autistic adults. It was at this stage I realised that the reason I had had these challenges was that I am autistic, and with the support of a colleague and my family I was assessed and diagnosed.
Understanding and accepting that I am an autistic person has made me happier, more confident and better able to know my strengths and take advantage of them.
This is why autism acceptance is important to me.
Autistic people are a bit different, that's all, and they are all very different from each other.
People are very varied, we are all a bit different to each other and some people are different in a way which means they find life harder. The last thing any of us should be is afraid of other people or hate them.
This is why acceptance should be important to us all!
