Yesterday in the non ridden session, after doing some yard work we groomed the ponies, remembering the reason that we groom and that is to check that the ponies are not injured in any way. We then went to have a play in the paddock. This was good handling practice, confidence building and a nice chance to bond and interact with the ponies! We spoke and looked at how to notice if a pony is lame and made sure everyone was hydrated, even the ponies 😁😆
Looking forward to welcoming Trec Lincolnshire to Clough Farm on Monday. I will be contacting everyone today with groups times
Looking to arrange times for Trec.
Anyone else who is interested let me know
Very sadly our little William has gone over rainbow 🌈 bridge to pony heaven 💔

Non ridden session this morning 10.30-12
We had 4 birthdays in the week 🥳
William our lovely little spotty pony who is a strong favourite turned 22.
Etta is our home bred who turned 5.
Millie our happy friendly yard dog turned 2.
Shade the one eyed wonder turned 29, we have now owned her for 28 and a half years!
On Saturdays non ridden session we decided to take the ponies out, this is a good way to spend some enjoyable quality time with the ponies and a good way for them to spend some non working time.
We are lucky to be located in a good spot off the road giving us some relatively safe space to get out and about 😁
Yesterdays non ridden session was a bit of a mixed bag. We always start by getting a few of the necessary yard jobs done so everyone helped with poo picking, buckets and hay. Liam then had a good groom to help get some of the loose hair out as they are all changing from winter coats to summer coats. We then slightly picked up from where we were last time by looking at Mickey's legs and I also got the clippers out.
Whilst I had a haylage delivery everyone made it an opportunity for a game of hide and seek, busy morning 😊

The Easter holidays has come to an end, back to normal for us tomorrow.
The last session we had this holiday was the non ridden Saturday morning.
After we all chipped in and fed, turned out, poo picked, mucked out, hayed and watered we moved on to look at a condition extremely common to cobs, mallanders.
Our golden girl Erecika is an Irish cob and unfortunately suffers with mallanders which appears on the flexures of the knee. It is the overproduction of keratin which is the building block of hair, horn and feather. As I explained to the girls, this problem occurs in horses with feathered legs and can be incredibly sore, uncomfortable and painful. It requires continuous monitoring and attention to try and keep the skin in good condition and and the horse as comfortable as possible. Hopefully this shows that there is a lot more to horses than just riding and mucking out, they require lots of care to remain happy and comfortable.
