Highbridge artist to premiere new work in Bridgwater A young artist from Highbridge, who won the Robert Richards Award, will showcase his new work at an exhibition in Bridgwater this month
We were proud to award Ezra Metcalfe with the Robert Richards Award digital art commission with the support of Arts Council England, this opportunity is for an artist under the age of 20 to receive a fee and access to materials and support to create a new piece of digital art. The new work created by Ezra will be shown to the public for the first time on Saturday 21st September when it will be projected as part of the ‘Twilight’ event taking place from 7.30pm at SL-ATE in Bridgwater.
Creative Director Deb Richardson explained “We support the creation of new work by artists throughout the year in a variety of ways and wanted to spotlight some of the emerging young talent in the county in memory of our late Chair Robert Richards. Ezra plans to study GCSE Art this year and already takes commissions for custom Pokemon characters. They are clearly a talent to watch for the future and we’re delighted to be able to share what they have created with audiences.”
The award is named after the late Robert Richards, who was our Chair of Trustees for over twenty years and was passionate about supporting emerging talent. Robert was well known in Somerset for his work as a trustee for Glastonbury Abbey and for his role at Glastonbury Festival.
Artist Ezra Metcalfe said “Digital formats are so convenient and there’s always an ‘undo’ button. I used an application called Procreate, which allows you to create animations and still images. My inspiration for the piece was from some of the dystopian fiction I read, which often have themes of the environment and hope. I’m motivated to do more about the climate crisis and one of the simplest things we can do is simply ask companies to stop creating unnecessary packaging, especially supermarkets. I didn’t expect to be awarded it. There are lots of young talented people in Somerset so to be selected is an honour and a surprise.”

Menhir Exhibition by Elizabeth Woodger Launches Tomorrow!
An exhibition of photographs celebrating the twelve special qualities of the Mendip Landscape will be the first work to be shown using the new digital facilities at The Engine Room in Bridgwater. “Menhir” by Somerset artist Elizabeth Woodger opens on Saturday 20th July to coincide with “Super Saturday”, a day of cultural events taking place in the town centre.
The exhibition, ‘Menhir’, takes its name from the neothilic standing stones and asks the question: what makes a landscape - geological processes or human actions? The images blend the cultural and natural histories of the region by printing photographs onto local rock specimens and then embedding them in the environment.
It was first seen by audiences projected onto the rock faces of Cheddar Gorge last October as part of the Moments on Mendip Contemporary art project. Artist and photographer Elizabeth Woodger created the work to mark the 50th anniversary of the Mendip Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership, now known as the Mendip Hills National Landscape, thanks to funds from Seed Sedgemoor and Arts Council England. As a former geologist, with a PhD in palaeoclimatology, Elizabeth’s creative practice represents a form of environmental and ecological research.
The exhibition is free to view and will be open Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm and on Saturday 27th July 11am - 2pm, with the final date to catch the work will be Friday 2nd August.

Spent a brilliant morning in Taunton meeting Nick from Actiontrack who I'm delighted to say will be partnering with us to deliver Blues in the Pews next year, through their Make Music: Repeat project! We discussed the importance of keeping what we love about BITP front and centre, while also looking at ways to grow what we're doing to help more musicians, and help existing musicians to develop and grow! All good news for BITP, for St John's Church, and for Highbridge. I also got to look round their great studio in the centre of Taunton which is well worth a visit!
