Have you ever considered if you are naturally drawn more to water than to the open countryside? Perhaps whilst walking you find natural soundscapes particularly soothing or it’s the feel of the sun on your face and it warming your back that you adore. It’s worth noticing & bringing awareness to our natural SENSE preference (sight, sound, touch, smell, taste) and the element (EARTH, AIR, FIRE or WATER) we feel drawn to as these can form powerful ingredients of a good self-care practice. #mindfulliving #conciousminds #naturalhealing

Knotted tense stomach before breakfast and a sense of urgency was my baseline feeling state back when I was working full time for the NHS. I was too busy to stop and ask myself was I actually ANXIOUS? And if so can I change this? Must it be part of my experience of ‘me’?

I’m lucky enough to live by the sea, to be able to visit regularly and sit consciously looking at the view (much like this Monk who also happened to be mediating on the beach). Absorbing the richness of the sensory experience being next to the sea creates. I took the residents of a local care home on a virtual journey in their imaginations to the seaside this morning in our morning Mindfulness session. In our minds eye we strolled along the promenade, sat and watched children playing on the beach and enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch. Memories of past holidays and local seaside trips, favourite lunch spots and old friends previously forgotten were rediscovered and remembered with a smile. Try breathing along in time with the circle, breathing in as it is expanding and breathing out as it is contracting. Slowing down your breathing rate to this pace calms the nervous system and focuses the mind. #mindfulliving

Journaling is such a under appreciated self-development tool. The way to explore themes and gain understanding of insights that arose during meditation. In taking 5 or 10 minutes to journal the experience, allowing the pen to flow freely across the page, ignoring spelling and grammatical errors this free writing is a form of self help which can give rise to some really interesting discoveries so don’t leave your mindfulness insights hanging….go explore them fully with some unabridged free writing! #minfulliving #selfhelp #mentalhealthawareness

Pain can be a great teacher. I’d forgotten this. In recent weeks my elbow injury from August has turned into painful tendinitis resulting in me giving up gym sessions and preventing me writing in my journal (a key mental health regulator for me) as gripping a pen hurts. I hadn’t realised how much it was getting me down, that and the fruitless GP consults had left me feeling powerless. Pain had started to become a regular feature of sitting meditation so instead of trying to ignore or push it away it has became my focus object. I got curious as to exactly where I could detect heat, throbbing, twitching and tension in my body and in doing that I remembered pain isn’t constant. If you sit and allow it to be it changes, ebbs and flows. Pain is simply a message of sensations from the body to let us know there is an issue to fix. I finally bit the bullet and paid to see a physio yesterday who informed me I’d developed a kind of whiplash injury - my muscles had contracted and stiffened around the original injury site triggering all kinds of nerve hyper-reactivity. Perhaps if I’d been more curious over my pain and relaxed with it instead of tensing around it I wouldn’t have gotten into such a state. So pain is indeed an excellent teacher! #meditationworks #mindfulliving #chronicpainawareness
