Nocturne is an evening of live Ambient and Improvised , , , and taking place in the beautiful and haunting setting of St Michaels All Angels Church in , Victoria Rd.

This December, Nocturne is teaming up with Welsh Record Label The Road Records, to present a special annual Christmas concert featuring two awe inspiring musical outfits, SAMANA and PILLOW. This is a fundraiser event for Su***de & Co a charity which works to support bereaved individuals and open the conversation about su***de related grief.

As an all artist-curated evening set up in the round, we seek to offer a uniquely immersive and intimate experience which will provide a passage for audience members to lose themselves to the magnanimity of the beautiful setting of St Michaels Church, encompassed by the soaring sounds of musical landscapes that encapsulate deep themes worthy of the changing of ones perspective.

Expect there to be candles, incense, a bar, mulled wine and special vibes. Whilst the heating will be on in the church, with it being one of the largest churches in Brighton, we strongly urge all audience members to dust off their thick garments and dress up nice and warm for the winter season.

December 15th we shall be joined by:

PILLOW
a contemporary string ensemble playing a mix of ambient soundscapes and dark cinematic compositions. The music captures the richness of a classical tone, whilst retaining the freedom of improvisation and the storytelling of folk like melodies. Sighting influence from artists such as Nick Drake, Erik Satie, Olivier Messiaen and Max Richter to name a few, Pillow embarks on telling their own story of how sounds can emerge and give meaning to life’s experiences.

SAMANA
Oscillating between melancholic ballads and spiritual experiences, their music leads one on a journey of cinematic proportion that evokes ancient beliefs, revolution, healing, fallen civilisations and intense deliberations of love, loss and death.
We shall be giving us a rare performance of this band as a full 7 piece, featuring new music from their up and coming album.

We shall also be raising money and awareness for the amazing charity Su***de&Co, who work to help bereaved individuals and those affected by su***de. It’s a great honour to have them on board, it’s a cause that means a great deal to us all.

"Nocturne Presents is new evening of live Ambient Improvised Music, Classical, Minimalist, World and Experimental Jazz taking place in the beautiful and haunting setting of St Michaels All Angels Church in Brighton, Victoria Rd.

Vol.5 will feature:

ELLIE FORD: Ellie Ford is a solo performer pairing cassette tape looping with processed live harp and vocals.Using improvisation, patterns of repetition and layering, Ellie Ford’s long form compositions blur the genres of acoustic, electronic and ambient music.

ROWAN HUDSON TRIO: Rowan Hudson is a pianist and composer working mostly within Jazz and Minimalist music. Moving to London in mid-2011 he studied Jazz Piano at Middlesex University and since then has formed several groups and played with some of London's leading musicians as well as touring Germany and the UK. His main creative outlet is his Passing Ships, a 5 piece group performing Rowan's compositional work, a subtle blend of Jazz and Minimalist music with a contemporary classical tone. A self-titled album was released in 2019 which was then followed by 'An Illustrated Land' in early 2022.

For this Nocturne Rowan will be performing as a trio with himself on piano, James Osler on Guitars/Electronics and Rhys Lovell on double bass. The music aims to tell a story with each of their own input and it couldn't be a better fit for the intimate vibe of the evening.

As usual we aim to challenge the conventions of what it is to attend a concert. We'll have the audience set in a circle around the musicians, the lights warm and dim, incense and candles burning and we encourage people to make themselves at home and get cosy. Feel free lie on the floor, meditate, do yoga, walk around the space, change your perspective, or sit on one of the chairs close your eyes and enjoy the music. Do what you do. Bring a duvet if ya like, pillow, something to lie on, whatever you feel."

Really special event happening for this months Nocturne Presents!

Very happy to announce a duo bill event Friday the 24th of Feb with the amazing Margate based duo Clementine Blue and Lim Orion, who'll be blessing our ears with lush synth and sax improvisations.

As well as that we'll have Nocturne Trio who'll be creating some rich soundscapes and playing an eclectic mix tunes and improvisations.

As per usual we encourage people to come and enjoy the amazing cavernous space of St Michael's Church, Brighton and to feel free to move and change their perspective of the music. Bring a pillow, blanky, whatever you feel.
