BA (Hons) Filmmaking UWE
Based in Bower Ashton, Bristol. When not filmmaking, the team can be found playing deeply competitive table tennis.
BA(Hons) Filmmaking is a production-based course that gives students the practical and intellectual skills essential for a career in today's creative industries. The course is delivered by a dynamic group of Lecturers and Technical Instructors, who engage in a range of practical and theoretical research and have strong links with the Film and Television Industry.
So great to be part of the brilliant School of Arts in such a creative city. Today we're gathering to talk about Local/Regional and International Partnerships at hearing from Bristol Culture and
Provocations:
How can Bristol attract, grow and retain the next generation of artists, makers and cultural leaders?
How can cultural institutions work for everyone?
How can we be more deeply embedded within the community and bring the international into dialogue with local contexts?
How can we be more inclusive, sustainable and accessible?
How can partnerships avoid being extractive?
How can we be more radical about our partnerships?
How can large-scale, international cultural institutions support and work in tandem with smaller, grass roots, artist-led organisations to support emerging artists and foster a healthy ecology?
How can partnerships amplify voices of emerging talent and advocate for arts and culture?
UWE Filmmaking students' work was recently showcased at an albert event held at BAFTA's headquarters. Their project, The Footprint Follows, was highlighted as a case study on the BAFTA albert Education Partnership website. We are incredibly proud of the sustainability knowledge our students demonstrate both behind and in front of the camera! We are proud of our 2022-23 albert Education Partnership graduates of the Applied Skills for a Sustainable Film Industry Accreditation led by Professor Charlotte Crofts.
This year we embedded the training in our Professional Practice modules at Level 2 and 3 led by Vanessa Bewley, and we had a bumper crop. Students learn about sustainable production best practice and how to reduce the carbon footprint of their productions, but are also assessed on their ability to tell stories that can engage audiences with environmental sustainability through "climate content".
albert is fast becoming the industry standard internationally and may soon become compulsory learning for some employers in the industry, so we're delighted that our students have got a head start with this which will make them more employable.

The film was developed as a Creative-Practice PhD at Queens University, Belfast: 'Let Us Be Seen: Analysing and Documenting the Development of Grassroots Feminism in Belfast'. Through an oral history approach, interviewing numerous people in Education, Arts and Activist organisations in Belfast this feature documentary film and accompanying research explores the ways in which feminism is operating on a grassroots level in contemporary Belfast and its recent history. The project takes a comparative approach to look at Peace Process-era grassroots feminism and explores the nexus of feminist and q***r identity politics, investigating how intersectionality operates in practice versus theory.
