The yogis believed that ignorance (avidya) lay at the root of our suffering & that we could train the mind to perceive differently and alleviate our pain. The methodology they came up with involved body, mind and community.

In many ways this foretells the MUCH later research that recognise pain is not actually held in the body. It is much more complex- many sources of information are conveyed to the 🧠.

How tired you are
How content or how depressed
What’s happening in the body
How meaningful your life is…

Then the brain interprets all these interactions & outputs a level of pain

Even here we can then adapt our responses to that pain- through meditation for example!

Yoga offers so much more than flexibility training- with so many likely to be hypermobile & often not know it it helps if we have plenty of options in how we share yoga in class.
Sign up to newsletter for some more in depth info & tips.
Here’s a few ideas:
- backing off from full flexibility mode can help- imagine resisting gravity or the stretch as well as going into it for some extra stability work
- Nervous system regulation to help manage anxiety- wide, slow, diaghragmatic breath for example
- Deep relaxation for nervous system regulation and rest for exhaustion
- Lots of somatics & rolling around to manage blood pressure & alleviate exhaustion.
- Yoga philosophy & practice around contentment & mindfulness so it’s not all about the poses
What else?
Love to support teachers excel & be inclusive so follow along & sign up to newsletters.
For the deep dive- 300hr training kicks off with a look at fascia, hypermobility & some movement science- alongside exploring ideas of prana. LOVE to share it with you.

principle of inclusive yoga 11/07/2024

Hello! Wrote a blog- love to know what you think!

principle of inclusive yoga how can we make yoga more inclusive so that everyone feels welcome. We need the skills of how to teach those in larger bodies, with anxious & neurodiverse minds as well as the acceptance that we are all equally valid

28/06/2024

Hello teachers, I have had a few of these qud about how to manage class numbers. get commitment consistency. SO copying a message I sent out last time! Hope this helps....the best thing I find is to make a drop in price a lot more than every week price so for example 4 weeks valid for 4 consecutive weeks= £40 and drop in is £15. I would not bother with 4 weeks over 6 weeks etc because it is still not clear & does not give you the security you need. but if you make the price differential enough they choose how to come. The other thing is to limit the places. and make it a more exclusive class e.g. a small group class with 8 places only for attention in class etc etc. then its £60 for 4 consecutive weeks. No drop ins (can try first week) and no refunds. Write your T&C up simply on your website/ a leaflet wherever they book. "I am a very small business. There are NO refunds and no extensions. (SO that I can run my business.) the end. Put boundaries in place. Students I am sure you agree knowing you have to go is good for everyone!

Pride caption

I came across this statue of Gyanin in Glasgow & was so happy to read more about Gyanin. Yoga’s aim is to integrate, to have us realise we are entirely whole. We cannot be broken, there cannot be “something wrong” with us.
This is expressed over & again in the philosophies- The sutras describe that the role of asana is to take us beyond the experience of a fractured reality, “resting in the “infinite...beyond duality.”
All life is described as interwoven or interconnected, an interplay of consciousness & matter- purusha & prakriti. So no wonder there are a multiplicity of forms & expressions- let’s celebrate them all. 💚💛🧡❤️💜

Oh yes & a few wars...There's a balance between giving students a space to forget their worries & a space to feel acknowledged- distress, anxiety, trauma & all. It's not all love & light. Yoga has space for all of us & all our concerns. 💗
One of the most supportive things we can do is normalise that feeling distressed in a distressing world is normal. To acknowledge that many of our health problems are rooted in social or environmental or economic problems.
They may also be personal but the stats around mental health, reflect our social & economic status & our life experiences. Ie those who have it harder economically suffer worse health outcomes.
As yoga teachers who want to share yoga for mental health, or who offer trauma sensitive yoga, we need to balance the fact that yoga has incredible, proven methods to alleviate suffering with the reality that life is still hard. 🎭
The path to liberation means recognising that there is something beyond all the suffering but it does not make the suffering just dissolve. 😥
It’s obvious when you think about it- those in Gaza right now are traumatised. No surprise there. Those witnessing may also experience vicarious trauma- when we observe the trauma of trauma of others it also affects the witnesses.
Follow for mental health tips & support through yoga & breathwork.

Practice finding space. The space to breathe with ease, to move freely, to soothe your mind.
All the space you need to be more fully you.
To practice yoga is to seek truth. Truth does not conform to neat stereotypes. We exist beyond simple dualities of "right" or "wrong" "success" or "failure", "masculine" or "feminine"...
Join me for a deep dive into Healing with Breath, Bandhas & vagus nerve to find the space we need. Space to breathe & live more fully & freely. Space to explore beyond duality. 🌊
A course for yoga teachers ready to share yoga of deep acceptance & a trauma sensitive exploration of pranayama & bandhas.
Comment "breath" below & I will send the link right to you. Places are limited in this online course with mentoring. We start 24th May. I would love to welcome you
Because- There is space for all of us. Exactly as we are. 🙌🏼

We cannot be too loud, too needy, too demanding, to fat, too q***r, too broken, too frail. 💗🌈 There is space for all of you.

When yoga is co-opted by the capitalist, patriarchal culture it becomes a practice of “fitting in".
But yoga is a practice of liberation- of radical self- acceptance. A practice to uncover truth. The truth is there is space for all of us. That things don't fit inside the "right" or "wrong", "good" or "bad" boxes.
We do not need to constrain the body or mind to a certain stereotype; or moulding our personality to be “just right”.
We cannot be too loud, too needy, too demanding, to fat, too q***r, too broken, too frail. 💗🌈
Self- acceptance & taking up space takes practice. Seeing beyond the duality takes practice. That is the practice of yoga.
The practice of finding the space you need to be more fully you. Let's do it!
Comment "breath" to find out about my Breath Bandhas Course starting 24 May. Only £297 for lifetime access. Payment plan's available. Partial bursaries available for those who have experienced racism/ discrimination. More info. In stories. 🙌🏼

Since the breath is so closely related to the nervous system we need to “go gently” when we share prayanama, bandhas & meditation. 💗 Our nervous system is "set" for a reason, so we do not want to create more shock with big changes.
.
I’ll add tips on teaching breathwork in a trauma sensitive way very soon- follow along.
If you would like support with deepening your own practice, supporting your own confidence and mental health & helping others; I would love to share my new online course with you. Request breath below and I’ll send you the link to your DMs. ⚡️
I bring together contemporary research into mental health & yoga, yogic techniques and share my decades of experience & practice. I am available to support you each step of the way.
I would love to see this work be more widely understood, the incredible value of yoga more fully appreciated & teachers able to support themselves and their students better by offering practices that are unique and really work!
For more info see the website/ newsletters. Any questions just let me know below.

An exploration of the interplay of yogic wisdom AND science, I wrote more on this and have linked the blog in bio. Do ask for the “news” if you’d like teachers resources on everything from women’s health to creative sequencing to marketing resources.
Research today validates that everything from meditation, to pranayama, to asana- done is specific ways- can help to alleviate pain.
It takes a few decades for science to filter through to the physios, doctors & then onto the public. So our understanding of pain is still often pretty limited & we tend to overemphasise the physical. e.g. we believe a scan can tell us why we have pain. But the more we realise how effective yoga can be and how to talk about pain, the better we can serve our students as teachers. Alongside the medics, doctors, physios/ PTs etc.
As the yogis described a long time ago, the mind has a massive bearing on our experience of reality. The breath has. massive bearing on how the nerves system & mind function. And yoga has the exact techniques we need to help heal body & mind.
My online courses are designed to be available for you to follow in your own time, including a deep dive into current moment science & anatomy, & women’s health.
Or for a full 300hr training ask soon- because it is getting full! Prospectus is available- as for 300 below.
LOVE to share more with you brilliant people & thanks for being here.

Reclaim your story. It's yours, you get to tell it in a way that suits you.
Often we inherit so many negative ideas. We get told our role in our story. We believe we were to blame. But we can work to see differently & believe in ourselves.
Not easy. It takes practice. It takes detachment. But it's possible. Choose one idea at a time & work there to transform it.
Sometimes the ideas I thought were helping actually hindered me. The idea that my hip felt "tight" being from experience sexual assault actually just gave the abuse a power over & inside of me.
When I separated the sensation from its story it became so much less important!
So go ahead check what ideas are working for you & edit away.
PS yes there is often family/ others holding us to account for their version. But we don't always have to listen or believe it.
PPS i'm not advocating the whole "anything is possible" if you believe. I'm pretty sure sure there'd be a lot less torture right now if it was that simple.
But even small changes in our inner landscape can change the whole view. 🌈
PPPS newsletter is going out tmrw. There's some nervous system info & a mellow breath + movement practice ready to go out. Link above or request it below. 💗

FREE video "Everything I knew about asana- that was wrong". Comment video below to receive.
I was so wrong for so long on so many "facts" about the body.
The fact that pain is so complex & can be distinct from injury came as a surprise.
The understanding around alignment I found hard to grasp- because it nuanced & in this insta- world we tend to prefer short, sharp & easily grasped definitives!
Its not that alignment isn't important- its useful for all sorts of reasons- like getting a good stretch, moving efficiently & being comfortable.
But its not that there is necessarily one alignment for all of us!
Come join me outside of the grid & let's work on being yoga teachers who celebrate how resilient the body is.
Message "video" below to receive the video. Laura x 💗 PS research references come with the video.

It’s so common to see yoga associated with weight loss or improving poses. But I think of it more as a coming home to ourselves, to connection with each other & the Earth & the skies & whatever God/esses you may want to embrace.
A way to accept ourselves by being with ourselves & seeing all of it- the bits we like & the bits we try to hide.
Love to hear what yoga is for you. Such a personal but deeply connected practice & philosophy.

Photos from Laura Gilmore Yoga's post 26/03/2024

It looks so sanitised. Thin bodies & ordered minds popping off to all the pretty studios! (Yes its calming to be somewhere with less dog hair on the floor.)
But theres space for all of you. The mess, the reluctance, the rage, the flabbiness, the q***rness the confusion, the prolapse, the mental breakdown, the flatulence.
Because we are already yoga. It’s a state of being not just an endless slog of practice!
I love yoga. I really do but we need to be real or we exclude those who invented it, those who need it & those who understand it!
Please do not for a moment think you need to change for yoga.
Did not mean to post but I recorded pelvic floor class this morning & talked about what its like to just let it go! Because its so bloody rare isn't it!.
