Hairy Jayne
Sustainable hair care – natural, vegan and either plastic free or refillable. Made by a hairdresser.
🧼 A thing to remember:
shampoo + water + friction = BUBBLES 🫧
Meaning if your shampoo bar isn’t lathering how you’d like it to — add either water or more friction.
Either wet your hair a little bit more OR rinse the 1st shampoo out and do another shampoo with the teeniest bit of shampoo.
Use your hair line rather than the palms of your hands get the lather going. Hair has a slightly rougher surface than skin so it’ll create more friction.
Sunday is World Refill Day (a global plastic awareness campaign) so I’d like to give a shout-out to three of our amazing stockists that have our refills on their shelves…
🛍️ have our conditioners on tap (as pictured)
🛍️ do too, as well as our dry shampoo
🛍️ across Bristol have our shampoo concentrate refills and dry shampoo
If you have a refill shop near you that you’d like to give a shout-out to, tag them below (maybe they’d like to get involved too! 🙂)

Hello, let’s talk FRAGRANCE. Specifically for hair, and even more specifically, for conditioner for your hair.
I’ve just released the newest addition to the range called Conditioner Base which is fragrance free.
It’s designed to be a very simple conditioner that you can either leave plain, or customise and add your own fragrance or enrich with plant oils. A bit like adding your own fruit and honey to your natural yoghurt to get it just how you like it 👌
Because freedom of choice is always good! And we’re all different. Which team are you when it comes to conditioner smells?
Sunny times at today! Here til 3pm. There’s also an open artists studio across the road . Quite a nice day out 🌞🙌🌞
🌱 Rosemary hair oil has being talked about online quite a lot lately and I was quizzed a bit about it quite a bit at one of last years workshops. There are Tiktokers who absolutely swear by it for hair growth, but sometimes it’s hard to tell if something is a just fad or the real deal.
Well, the good news is that rosemary essential oil has actually been proven to help keep the scalp healthy. It strengthens circulation and increases blood flow to the follicles which leads to less hair loss. And in turn, longer hair.
When used on the scalp, rosemary oil’s anti-inflammatory properties reduce irritation, dandruff, and itching. This means a much better environment for healthy hair growth.
Which is why I always recommend our Herbal shampoo bar to anyone who might be struggling with their scalp. The Herbal blend is made up of Rosemary, Lavender and Clary Sage, all of which are great essential oils, specifically for the scalp.
For a quick at-home scalp treatment, mix 20-30 drops of rosemary essential oil into 100ml of one of the carrier oils we sell in the DIY section on our website. Argan, fractionated coconut or olive oil for example. Massage your mixed rosemary hair oil into your scalp and hair, leave for at least 20 mins and then wash it all out. Repeat weekly.
Note: while rosemary is great for hair growth, it’s by no means a cure for hair loss. Hair loss can be slowed down but unfortunately it can’t be completely prevented.
🌱 I’d be interested to hear if you’ve tried rosemary essential oil for growth?
A side-by-side comparison guide for our two types of shampoo. Have you tried them both, how do you think they compare? 🤔
(If you haven’t but you’re curious they’re both available in sample sizes 😉)
⚠️ Warning: some shampoo bars aren't what they seem.
If a 'shampoo bar' has sodium cocoate/olivate in the ingredients list (ours don't) it's actually a soap, made in a traditional soap-making way. Maybe it has some hair-friendly ingredients in it but it's not going to be a true solid shampoo (like ours).
A customer query this week from someone asking for advice about this, thought it might be helpful to others who've had a similar experience:
"Hi there! My hair is having a horrible time after I washed it yesterday with a sodium cocoate/olivate based bar, it's straw-dry & waxy to touch, & shedding a LOT when I try to brush it. I'd like to buy your herbal bar asap, but I saw the review post on your IG page on how it leaves a 'film' on the hair - what does this mean? Thank you"
My reply:
"It sounds like the bar you used was a soap-based one. The ‘film' or 'coating' usually refers to the oil-based moisturisers that are in our shampoo bars, which are beneficial to hair that is prone to dryness or is wavy/curly/coily. If you'd rather avoid any feeling of residue or film at all, I'd recommend trying our new Shampoo Concentrate which is totally oil free. Will also say that both types of shampoo are sulfate free which means they won't remove all of the natural oil from your hair (as it's there to protect it and keep it healthy!)"
I always recommend trying samples before committing, too. I love to give advice over messages (ask any time!) but the only way you can be ABSOLUTELY 100% sure about whether you'll love a product or not is to give it a go in your hair.
Pre-orders are now open! The new-fangled Shampoo Concentrate is *almost* ready to launch 🚀

The annual Free From Skincare awards are dedicated to beauty products that are free from ingredients that are sometimes associated with skin and health problems, ethical and environmental concerns. So if you do have sensitivities or allergies to certain ingredients or cosmetics it’s a great place to discover suitable products and brands. Knowing that they’ve been trialled and tested but their independent judges 👍
(I love too that we get sent the judges honest feedback, so if there’s anywhere we can improve we can learn from their comments)
🌸 Time for some flower power! Two brand new multipurpose mists are here… Organic Orange and Organic Lavender flower waters. And they smell so gooooood.
What’s a flower water? Well, it’s not water with petals bobbing about in it but it is water that has many of the healthy benefits that flowers and plants bring.
Flower waters are more formally known as hydrosols or hydrolats. They are a by product of the hydro-distillation of essential oils.
When plants and flowers are hydro distilled (using steam) to make essential oils, the super concentrated essential oils go to the top and the water that is left then contains a teeny amount of essential oil plus all of the therapeutic extracts of the plant. Amazing!
So you get the benefits of the plant but at a lower dilution. Which is great news for anyone with sensitive skin.
My favourite ways to use them:
🌸 spritzing on my face when I’m hot or when I need to wake up
🌸 refreshing my curls when I’ve slept on them
🌸 before I use Natural Beauty Oil on my hair or skin
The orange one (neroli scented) is my fave for mood boosting, whereas lavender is a better choice for calming an irritated scalp.
Orange or lavender?

The perfect combo for mighty fine hair. Nourishing shampoo, Light conditioner (which won't weigh hair down) and our award winning Treatment conditioner to use as a deep conditioning mask. A great bundle fine and shorter hair styles. Hydrates and nourishes without any heaviness.
Top tip: for super fine hair that struggles with volume I recommend the reverse washing technique. Which is easy _ conditioner first and then shampoo.

Don’t let the end bits go to waste! 🧼
These angels working together are great for brightly coloured hair 🌈 Firstly, you want to be washing it as little as possible to slow down any fade. So dry shampoo and hair perfume are a must. And then when you do wash it, a treatment mask is perfect for adding in protein to strengthen and seal 😇
😳 2022, what a year. Nothing short of challenging for small businesses, and I’m sure you’ve heard enough about rising energy costs and broken supply chains and tricky economic climates and strikes 😐
BUT. We made it through another year 🎉 Whooo!
This year we had to strip everything right back to basics to avoid putting our prices up. We closed our little bricks & mortar shop (Bloop) back in August, which was sad but it was needed. And now I’ve gone back to doing all of the making and designing and selling and emails and packing and admin, with Karl on tech and moral support and Graham just in it for the high fives and cuddles 🐶
Despite the many dips, there are always some highs and things to be grateful for…
☑️ our Natural Beauty Oil winning Gold in Green Parent Beauty Awards and our Herbal Shampoo Bar being a finalist in FreeFrom Skincare awards
☑️ connecting with more makers, movers and shakers by being part of some really lovely IRL events in Bristol and beyond
☑️ having some inspiring trips together to Manchester, Gower peninsula and Copenhagen, and I got to travel home to see my family in Australia
☑️ we went to really fun festivals and I’m excited about applying to run some Hairy Jayne workshops next year 🤞
☑️ more crafty projects like crocheting, soap-making, herbal foraging and garland making
All of these combined have inspired a new project for Hairy Jayne in 2023. I’ll keep creating top notch hair care as always 🙂 and we’re gonna be working with .yuup to run some in-person workshops at our HQ. Starting with making jesmonite soap dishes. And then hopefully we’ll get some other makers on board, too.
Is there anything you’d be keen to make in the new year?
THANK YOU to all of you wonderful beings for being here. Cheeeeeers and have a happy new year!🥂
👀 When people see these shampoo bar holders out of context – they're either a bit confused by what they are, or they just want to touch them. A bit weird, very tactile and very good at keeping shampoo bars dry in the shower.
Simple and fuss free. This set follows the 'less is more' philosophy. Less waste, less space in the bathroom, fewer decisions to make about grooming in general. A multipurpose fragrance free oil that nourishes both the hair and skin. A simple bamboo detangling comb. A treatment mask for a moisture and protein boost. And a vegan sponge to cleanse and exfoliate the skin with only the addition of water needed.

I have a personal soft spot for this particular duo. This is the Thirsty Hair hair care set. I'm someone who has naturally wavy-curly hair, and at the time of developing these two products it was also bleached blonde.
Very dry. Super thirsty, as you can imagine.
These two are still my go-to when the ends are starting to get that crunchy feeling.
The shampoo bar is mild and nourishing, with lovely Mango Butter and Olive Oil coming to the rescue. And the Treatment Conditioner has added Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein which curls and damaged hair love to give them back some structure.

🌵 Your scalp's natural oil is key for keeping your hair soft and hydrated but sometimes it can build up, leading to oily looking hair. Our dry shampoo powder helps to combat this because of the corn starch in it that soaks the excess oil (and sweat) up.
I've added lavender powder for a fresh fragrance and rhassoul clay for extra absorption, but these two have also been chosen because they make the powder appear browny-beige rather than bright white. Excess white powder residue can always be spotted in the roots, which is why I wanted natural colour that would blend in more easily if any residue is left.
But, ideally, the powder shouldn't be left in the roots.
🌵 Our top tips for applying and avoiding powder residue:
1. If you're already dressed, pop a towel around your shoulders before you start.
2. Section your hair and gently sprinkle the powder along each parting so that it's not just applied in clumps.
3. This one's important: leave the powder to set for a minute or two to give it a chance to absorb all the oil.
4. Massage your roots and scalp all over with your fingertips to loosen and disperse the powder.
5. If necessary, give your hair a brush through to remove any excess.
