We've had an inspiring term at Maker City! Our young people have been very busy working on collaborative and personal design projects, all while learning how to use digital fabrication kit: from 3D printing little zip charms to vinyl cutting/heat pressing big stage backdrops for Knowle West Fest

Alongside all that, we also invited three special guests to run sessions with us, introducing our young people to different industries and perspectives:

🏠 Nudge Group - designing for the new Temple Quarter developments.

🚌 Curiosity Unltd - learning about the Bristol Bus Boycott and getting stuck in with social action.

🎌 Alice Gabb - co-creating social action banners.

Do you know a young person who’d like to join Maker City? We are now accepting signups for our 2024-25 programmes! Link in bio or visit: tinyurl.com/kwmc-ypp

Powerful self-portraits and audio stories by local multi-cultural women, reflecting on their own sense of self within the context of Knowle West and the homes they have left behind. 🏡🌍

These works were created through a series of workshops facilitated by our wonderful recent artist in residence Myah Jeffers. Together they used photography, printmaking, sound, and textiles to explore the complexity of the diasporic experience (the experience of leaving your original homeland).

These artworks also offer blueprints of possible futures as well as past lives once lived; exploring and reimagining notions of ‘home’ and ‘belonging’ through the lens of migration. ⛵️

Audio edited and sound designed by Rowan Bishop.

We are thrilled to be part of the Transforming Energy Together project, working with , and local people to explore pathways towards scalable community energy!

Exciting news to share... along with Knowle West Media Centre and Southmead Development Trust we have been awarded funding through the Transforming Energy Together programme to work with residents to understand their energy priorities and develop solutions together.

The funding will enable us to partner with residents in developing community-based projects that generate clean energy locally and reduce energy usage in homes and neighbourhoods, ultimately cutting energy bills, improving home comfort, creating green job opportunities, and driving sustainable investment at a community level.

This is an exciting addition to our Community Climate Action project that will end next year.

The programme is delivered by Bristol Climate & Nature Partnership Centre For Sustainable Energy and Bristol Energy Network and is part of the Innovate UK funded Net Zero Project, led by Bristol City Council

We recently learned how to encode words into textiles with Wisterlitz's Knitwitter app at Creative Cuppa!

The Knitwitter app is an open-source tool, so anyone can use it – simply type in your message, then it’ll transform your text into binary code and make pattern suggestions. You can choose a pattern and interpret it however you like – we chose weaving, stickers and crochet! These weaving looms were laser-cut over at our maker space, KWMC The Factory.

We had amazing discussions about craftivism (using crafts to try to achieve political or social change) and data privacy. 💪🏿

Check out knitwitter.com to try it yourself – snap a pic of what you make and tag us!

Another great session and lots of ideas for the Community Climate Action Plan at Knowle West Media Centre 🌿

Looking forward to this plan coming together for our community.

24/05/2024

A massive thank you to all that attended the event at the Knowle West Media Centre. To all the staff whom were great and up for being painted!! Filwood Community Centre also so lovely to need members of the team. What a community feeling and sense of coming together for the children.
It was so nice and refreshing to see a facility like this and only wished we had something like this for the children in North Bristol. It’s somewhere I felt that children would be heard, safe and educated.
Can’t wait to be back xx

Our Story

"People invested time in me and it was the first time anyone had ever done that."

Knowle West Media Centre is a charity and arts organisation based in South Bristol. For over 20 years we’ve been supporting people to make exciting changes in their lives and communities - using the power of digital technology and the arts to come up with new ideas and solutions to problems.

For some people this means developing confidence and learning new skills - perhaps in music production, journalism or manufacturing - while for others it involves taking a creative approach to exploring big issues like housing, health and isolation.

If you’d like to join the creative community at KWMC and find out what we could offer you, get in touch or pop in to our environmental building in the heart of Knowle West.
