Happy World Environment Day!

This year’s theme focuses on how we can “Restore Our Earth” 🌍 and one simple and powerful way we can all take action is by recycling our old electricals. Did you know that a whopping 75% of materials in our electricals can be recycled?

Anything with a plug, battery or cable contain precious materials from gold, copper and steel, to lithium and palladium. These natural resources can be reused and recycled into anything from children’s playgrounds to lifesaving medical equipment ♻️ and also means reducing the need to mine for new materials.

By recycling your old electricals, you’re not just clearing out clutter—you’re helping clean up the planet!

So if you can’t repair, donate or sell your old electricals, always recycle them! Head to our recycling locator to find all your local repair, donation and recycling drop-off points: https://ow.ly/Olo250S9KLw+

And celebrate by sharing this post and inspiring others to start recycling!

Our next Repair Café is on Saturday 20th July, at St Cuthbert’s Church Hall, from 10 until 12.
Here are a few of the things people have brought in to be fixed in the past. We’ll do our best to fix what comes through the door, but if we can’t, we may be able to sign post you to someone else we know who can help.
Hope to see you on Saturday! Please note we will not be available in August; after 20th July, the next BS4 Repair Café will be in September.

Our clever electricals repairers do enjoy a light bulb moment!

Cash donations much appreciated, to help us cover the cost of room hire.

Here’s a before and after from a cushion we mended at a recent Repair Café. This was repaired by hand.
We are looking for another volunteer or two who could help us with machine sewing mends in particular, but hand sewing is always useful at our cafés too.
Are you a keen machinist who could offer a couple of hours of your time each month? The Repair Café takes place on the third Saturday of each month. You can pop in to see what it’s all about, and have a chat on Saturday if you’re interested. Or send us a message. Thank you.

Our next Repair Cafe is on Saturday 20th April, at St Cuthbert's Church Hall, on Sandy Park Road, between 10 and 12.
Bring along your broken items, for one of the team to have a look at! We can't guarantee a repair, but we'll do our best, or suggest someone else who may be able to help.
Please note that we don't do alterations (eg take up trousers or new curtains etc), and we don't do routine maintenance or servicing of items such as bicycles - there are local businesses who can help you with that. Our priority is to fix broken things to keep them out of the bin.
Hope to see you on Saturday!

A great Repair Cafe for March! People brought in a variety of items including a much loved lamp, a hairdryer which broke after a single use, an umbrella, cushion, coat, a Dad's favourite wind up radio, a clock and drum machine.

If you have something needing a repair our friendly volunteers will next be in St Cuthbert's Church Hall on Saturday 20th April 10am-12pm.

We are looking for additional volunteer repairers - sewing, general repairs or electrical, we need a variety of skills to support this wonderful community project, helping people and saving what we can from the recycling bins or landfill. Come and chat or send us a message. We'd love to see you.

Every November, it feels like we see more and more adverts encouraging us to empty our bank accounts to buy more and more stuff. And not just via email, but on TV, billboards and across the internet too.

This Black Friday frenzy leaves clouds of greenhouse gases and a trail of waste. So this year, let's choose a different path.

Here are our five top things the marketers don't want you to do:

#1 Repair something!
This may be preaching to the choir, but repair is a fantastic way to save money, learn skills, reduce our environmental impact and meet new people. Whether you're a pro or a total beginner you can find a repair option here. https://therestartproject.org/repair-options/

#2 Support your local repair shop
If you can't fix it yourself or with help, your local repair shop may be able to. Why spend loads on a pricy new gadget when you could spend less to keep your current one going, do your part for the planet and support a local business instead? https://creativemedia.org.uk/bristol-repair-cafes/

#3 Get informed
I talk about why repair matters all the time in these emails. But this week is the perfect time to learn about the bigger picture from a real expert. Listen to the amazing Alice Bell on our podcast as she talks us through the history of the climate crisis and how repair relates to reducing our emissions.https://therestartproject.org/podcast/climate-history/?

#4 Take action
Repairing things ourselves is a great first step. But we also need governments to make repair easier, cheaper and more accessible:

If you're in the UK, check out the UK Repair & Reuse Declaration and email your MP about it. https://repairreusedeclaration.uk/email-your-mp/
If you're in the EU, there are just two weeks left to ask your EU representative to support repair during a crucial round of negotiations.

#5 Embrace pre-loved stuff
It's an open secret that second hand stuff is generally pretty amazing: cheaper, trendier and better for the planet. And that's even true for most tech these days! So whether you're buying, selling or donating, think reuse first.
