Pythagorean Theorem Found On Clay Tablet 1,000 Years Older Than Pythagoras.

But while Pythagoras was an important historical figure in the development of mathematics, he did not figure out the equation most associated with him (a2 + b2 = c2). In fact, there is an ancient Babylonian tablet (IM 67118) which uses the Pythagorean theorem to solve the length of a diagonal inside a rectangle. The tablet, likely used for teaching, dates from 1770 BCE - centuries before Pythagoras was born in around 570 BCE.

Another tablet from around 1800-1600 BCE has a square with labeled triangles inside. Translating the markings from base 60 the counting system used by ancient Babylonians showed that these ancient mathematicians were aware of the Pythagorean theorem (not called that, of course) as well as other advanced mathematical concepts.

Named contralto Marian Anderson made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City on January 7, 1955, as Ulrica in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera. She was the first African American to perform with the company. Anderson was born in Philadelphia on February 27, 1897 and began her musical training at the age of six with the Union Baptist Church choir. Rejected by a local music school because of her race, Anderson had private voice lessons funded by her family, church, and friends. She toured the United States extensively, appearing in concerts and recitals, and, in 1925, won first prize in the New York Philharmonic voice contest. The contest yielded a number of performance dates, but it was not until she traveled to Europe that she gained major recognition…read more at the via link>

Pearl Primus was a dancer, choreographer, anthropologist, and teacher whose performance work drew on the African American experience and on her research in Africa and the Caribbean.

Primus received a degree in biology and premedical sciences from Hunter College in New York City. While taking health education courses at New York University, Primus sought employment at a laboratory but was deterred by racial discrimination. She was later hired in the dance unit of the National Youth Administration and soon received a scholarship from the New Dance Group, where she studied modern dance and with whom she made her debut in 1943. The following year she gave a solo recital, which led to several Broadway engagements.

Pearl Primus was born on November 29th, 1919, in Trinidad.

On this date we mark the birth of Samuel Coleridge Taylor in 1875. He was an African English Composer, one of that country's most celebrated composers at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The son of a doctor from Sierra Leone and a British mother, Samuel showed musical gifts at the age of five. His father, frustrated in his attempts to progress as a physician through apparent racial prejudice, deserted his family and returned to his native West Africa. At the age of five Samuel began playing the violin and joined the choir of a Presbyterian church in Croydon, where H. A. Walters guided his progress and arranged his admittance to the Royal College of Music in 1890. At the age of fifteen he entered the Royal college of Music in London.

His most famous symphonic performances were Hiawatha's Wedding Feast (1898), The Death of Minnehaha (1899), and Hiawatha's Departure (1900). Coleridge Taylor was very well received in the United States. James Weldon Johnson and Booker T. Washington were personal friends and he was President Theodore Roosevelt’s guest at the White House.

The Coleridge-Taylor Society was created in 1901 in Washington D. C. specifically to study and perform his music. Samuel Coleridge Taylor died in 1912.

*Coleridge-Taylor was 37 when he died of pneumonia. His death is often attributed to the stress of his financial situation. He was buried in Bandon Hill Cemetery, Wallington, Surrey (today in the London Borough of Sutton).

In 1938, 17 brass and copper heads and the upper half of a brass figure (dated to the 14th-15th century CE) were found by accident during house building works at Ife in Nigeria. The realism and sophisticated craftsmanship of the objects challenged Western conceptions of African art
