Did you know we have enough driveshaft machines in production to collectively balance over 12 million drive shafts across the globe each year? And counting!

In 1998, we supplied GKN Driveline with its first modern day driveshaft balancing machine, starting a focus on driveshaft technology that continues to this day. We have worked with our customers to understand and overcome the difficulties in driveshaft balancing, developing a highly configurable machine with full automation options balancing 1 to 4 piece driveshafts in up to 5 planes.

Our eRotor Model 1 balancer is one of our top spec machines designed to meet the demands of medium and high production electric motor balancing in an automated environment. The machines are fine tuned to provide ultra high accuracy and repeatability to cater for the extreme efficiencies required from electric rotors.

The Model 1 is a compact single station balancer with integrated dual 2 axis servo precision drilling units for fast automatic unbalance correction. This setup allows the drills to be easily configured for multiple part types.
It’s equipped with error proof automatic changeover to change the machine setup from one part type to another in seconds at a push of a button. This eliminates the need for an operator to enter the cell, removes operator error and supports full automation in time sensitive manufacturing lines.

Two Belgians, two Americans and two Brits walk into a bar...🍻

We had a fantastic week welcoming some of our global sales team and those of our sister companies Kleinknecht and BEPCO Bruges to our headquarters in Bristol. Together we form a part of the Burke Porter Group EMEA transportation division serving a global audience.

Although the visit was focused around brushing up on balancing and NVH theory and presentation skills, it’s always great to get the team together and connect over a beer while enjoying the sights around Bristol and Bath.

Balancing Fact or Myth? | Universal Balancing 08/06/2023

Myth busting balancing
STATEMENT:
“If a part is balanced on a machine, it will be balanced on assembly.”

ANSWER FROM OUR EXPERT:
Wrong - An assumption in balancing is that the rotor being balanced will be mounted perfectly concentric in application. If this isn’t true, then the rule that runout x mass comes into play and unbalance by fitting will be found.

Send us your questions and we’ll answer them.- https://bit.ly/3o1D7Bt

Myth busting balancing
STATEMENT:
“All production parts can be balanced to specification.”

ANSWER FROM OUR EXPERT:
Wrong - A balancer will only balance. It will not straighten, reduce clearance, or resolve runout. Parts need to be capable of being balanced.

Our eRotor balancing machines are the perfect combination of speed and accuracy. High accuracy is achieved thanks to our unique measuring system and our patented clamping system that provides the perfect conditions to produce quality drilled holes, eliminating burrs and drilling to a very precise depth.
The accuracy of the 2 systems improves a critical machine performance indicator, first time throughput (FTT), reducing the requirement for a second correction.
Combine this with simultaneous 3 axis drilling for speed, and you have an unbeatable high performance eRotor balancing machine.

What’s new in the balancing standards? 📖

ISO 21940-21:2022 describes the requirements for testing hard and soft bearing balancing machines to ensure their performance. 3 main changes have been made to the standard:
• the introduction of new computer based technology into balance machine indication systems;
• the introduction of additional tests for repeatability and speed range;
• the introduction of greater clarification for use with automated and special purpose machines.

Every balancing machine build comes with its own challenges and experiences. That’s why we think it’s important for our service & build engineers to share their knowledge with the other engineers on completion of each build.

We have made this a standard process to improve the knowledge and support our service and build team can provide to each other and to our customers.

Well done to Chris Marks for providing this machine familiarisation session 👏

The number of electric cars sold globally is estimated to have reached over 10.6 million in 2022, that is a huge increase on the 6.6 million in 2021 and 3 million in 2020. 🚗🔌

The electric motors in these cars rely on high rotor speeds to produce their power, but the faster it rotates the stronger the vibration can be from unbalance. To achieve a smooth, quiet rotor, the unbalance must be much lower than that acceptable on a typical rotor.
ISO 21940-21 provides the means to evaluate the gauge URR (Unbalance Reduction Ratio) measurement which generally in industry is 95%. Our eRotor Balancer machine series has been optimised for eMobility balancing and can achieve a typical URR of 98%, giving you the high accuracy you need to produce a quality rotor.

Automatic Changeover is available as an option on all our eRotor balancers to ensure error free setup and changeover of the complete machine without human intervention. We deem this as a must with today’s demanding eMobility production lines where human error can cause quality issues or production down time. Changeover is achieved with a series of servo axis, linear actuators and configurable pneumatic end stops, all linked to the appropriate job file in Winbal. Simply select your predefined job file in Winbal and the machine will do the rest for you!

🥇 Well done and thank you to UB employees Jason, Magnus, Jonathan, Mason, 吉思华 Sihua Ji, Graham and Joe for attending and completing their Sales and communications training, especially since the course ran over a weekend!

Joe – “I really enjoyed it, the whole session was engaging and fun. I am already using the techniques and lessons learned in my work.

The sales training was all about making our approach to a sales situation or a customer interaction more streamlined and efficient. It also helped us to think more effectively about what type of questions we were asking, such as asking open questions (Where, What, Who, Why, When, How). We participated in some exercises which made us think about what we are currently doing well and what needs improvement, this allowed us to be open and then work together towards a solution. We also learned how easy it is to focus on one thing, such as price or money but with the techniques shown to us we can put that to the side and instead focus on the real needs and wants of a customer which ultimately is more beneficial for everyone.

I would say that the training is hugely beneficial for anyone dealing with both customer interactions and internal discussions and would love to have another chance to build upon the training we received.”
