Children of the 90s

Children of the 90s

Want to take part? If you aren't sure, get in touch! Children of the 90s are a group of nearly 20,000 young people, born in 1991 and 1992 in and around Bristol.

If you were born around Bristol between April 1991 and December 1992 - you might be in the Children of the 90s research project and eligible to get involved! Scientists have studied these young people to aim to help discover the causes of the most important health and social problems facing the world today so that we can help prevent those problems. Taking part is voluntary and 100% confidential.

'My earliest memories are a fun-filled day off school where we would be well looked after, fed and go home with lots of treats!

My recent visit was amazing - and we got to meet Jean! It was very well organised and child friendly with food and drinks provided. It is a very interesting study and I think elements of my health will be beneficial for studies. It's great my children are involved too.'

Melissa recently enjoyed a day out for the Children of the Children of the 90s clinic 🎈

Melissa's mother, Jane, remembers signing up for the study over 30 years ago:

'I was approached in St Michael's Hospital and asked if I would participate in the study. I thought it sounded very interesting and was happy to sign up.

We attended many appointments and when my daughter was suddenly diagnosed with cancer I thought it was even important to continue with the study.

Following many life events, I took a break from the questionnaires but since becoming a grandma I have rejoined and look forward to participating for the foreseeable! Thank you Children of the 90s.'

Photos from Children of the 90s's post 20/08/2024

'I enjoy being part of the study - everyone is so kind. My children also participate in Children of the 90s and they thoroughly enjoy their days out at the clinic.'

Just look at how big Amelia is since her last visit 🥰

15/08/2024

'My earliest memories of the study are having days off school, getting a 'stretchy man' and having 'magic cream'!

It's nice to still be involved in a study that is finding out more and more about our physical and mental health.'

Natasha recently visited with her daughters for their 'Children of the Children of the 90s' clinic visit - who both went home with our puppy and teddy mascots 🧸

'For as long as I can remember, my earliest memories are coming to the clinic as a child with my mum from primary school and I received a toy of my choice when I completed the session.

Because I have been part of Children of the 90s for such a long time now I think it is important to continue - we are part of research that could help scientific progress in some way.'

Thank you Oliver - for joining us this week for one of the last few shorter @ 30 slots 🎈

As we near the end of the @ 30 clinic, we take a look at the CPET test so many of you took part in 🚴

The CPET (cardiopulmonary exercise test) is an assessment of the cardiopulmonary system at rest and during exercise.

Here, Dr Siana Jones from UCL explains the importance of looking at the health of your heart and blood vessels - and what this data will tell us 🫀

Cardiovascular health peaks at around 30 years old so capturing this data now is really important.

Many thanks to the thousands of you who took part 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Watch Points West this evening featuring our placenta research🤰🏻

Can placentas give indicators for ill health in later life?

Professor Abi Fraser talks about her latest work with - using the placentas donated by the mothers of Children of the 90s over thirty years ago.

In a world first, thousands of placentas will be examined to give health information about the mothers and babies - looking for signs of health conditions such as heart disease 🫀

Grip strength, also known as hand strength, is a measurement that indicates muscle health in the hands and forearms 💪

The measurement is often included in longitudinal studies because it is an indicator of overall health and well-being 💖

The GRIP digital hand dynamometer provides an easy and reliable way to record grip strength. They are commonly used by doctors and nurses with people of all ages 👩‍⚕️

Muscle strength increases until around age 30 before slowly declining - this is why it is important for us to capture this measurement in our @ 30 clinic.

We have large databases of previous measurements, so we have a very good idea of what level of strength to expect in healthy men and women of different ages. We complement grip strength tests with more focused measures of different aspects of function such as balance, fatigue and power so we can build up a detailed picture of muscle function in each participant 📊

During your @ 30 appointment we look at the microvascular system to understand if we can start to see early indications of who may or may not become ill as they get older.

The microvascular system is the part of your blood system that involves all the minute blood vessels 🩸

We use a special video microscope that is placed under the tongue to look at the blood volume in, and flow through the tiny blood vessels found here. This measurement takes about 10 minutes 🔬

A healthy microvascular system is important for the transport of glucose (sugar) from the blood to your organs.

Damage to the microvascular system can be related to blindness, kidney failure, heart attack and stroke 🫀

The glycocalyx is a thin layer of material that coats these minute blood vessels and measuring this can indicate the health of the microvascular system.
